Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) consist of densely packed long-chain organic molecules, which are chemisorbed on metal substrates through a sulfur head group. The purpose of this work, is to study the arrangement and structure of SAMs by IR, XPS, NEXAFS, STM, Ellipsometry and contact angle. While the first group of triptycenethiols and the second group of triarylaminethiols show a formation of disordered films on the gold surface, the third group of alkanethioacetates shows the formation of highly ordered monolayers. A further adsorption to upright oriented molecules is hindered due to kinetic effects. In the case of azo-molecules it is shown that the photoisomerization process is not reversible. These molecules are not able to form highly ordered monolayers on the gold surface due to the critical effect of azo-moiety.

Book excerpt: Ordered, organic monolayers were formed on gold slides by adsorption from ethanol of HS(CH2)10CH2OH, HS(CH2)10CH3, S(CH2)10CH2OH2, S(CH2)10Ch32, and of binary mixtures of these molecules in which one component was terminated by a hydrophobic methyl group and one by a hydrophilic alcohol group. The compositions of the monolayers were determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Wettability was used as a probe of the chemical composition and structure of the surface of the monolayer. When monolayers were formed in solutions containing mixtures of a thiol and a disulfide, adsorption of the thiol was strongly preferred (approx. 75:1). Monolayer, Gold, Surface, Contact angles, Thiols, Disulfides. (mjm).

Book excerpt: This two-volume book provides an overview of physical techniques used to characterize the structure of solid materials, on the one hand, and to investigate the reactivity of their surface, on the other. Therefore this book is a must-have for anyone working in fields related to surface reactivity. Among the latter, and because of its most important industrial impact, catalysis has been used as the directing thread of the book. After the preface and a general introduction to physical techniques by M. Che and J.C. Vedrine, two overviews on physical techniques are presented by G. Ertl and Sir J.M. Thomas for investigating model catalysts and porous catalysts, respectively. The book is organized into four parts: Molecular/Local Spectroscopies, Macroscopic Techniques, Characterization of the Fluid Phase (Gas and/ or Liquid), and Advanced Characterization. Each chapter focuses upon the following important themes: overview of the technique, most important parameters to interpret the experimental data, practical details, applications of the technique, particularly during chemical processes, with its advantages and disadvantages, conclusions.

Book excerpt: Nanostructured materials play a vital role in almost all aspects of science and technology in the 21st century. The materials include nanoparticles, nanofilms, biological membranes etc. whose physicochemical properties are size-dependent. Thin films have wide range of applications in various branches of science. One of the efficient methods to form miniaturized structures for device applications is to fabricate nanostructured films on different substrates. Surfactant assembly on metallic and non-metallic surfaces based on self assembly and Langmuir-Blodgett technique offers a unique way to form thin films at molecular levels. The process of formation of unimolecular assemblies gives the flexibility of tuning the properties of underlying substrates for various applications including wetting characteristics, lubrication, passivation, mimicking biological phenomena etc. Towards this direction, self assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiols on gold and silver surfaces have been studied comprehensively for the past two decades. The reported literature on short chain length thiol-based monolayers is however, limited since the formation using conventional methods yield poor quality monolayers. The short chain length monolayers are useful in various applications like tribology, layer-by-layer assemblies, biosensors etc. Hence, it is essential to reproducibly form SAMs of various chain lengths and understand their properties. The present study is related to the formation of SAMs of alkanethiols and diselenides on gold and silver surfaces to form ordered and well-oriented monolayers. Monolayers of varying chain lengths (CH3(CH2)nSH where n = 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 15) have been formed on gold and silver surfaces using different methods, (1) adsorption from neat thiols; (2) adsorption under electrochemical control and (3) adsorption from alcoholic solutions of the thiols. The characteristics features of the SAMs have been followed based on three different aspects, (i) structure and.

Book excerpt: Through molecular simulations we have observed that the surface of gold nanoparticles become highly corrugated by the adsorption of alkanethiolate self assembled monolayers (SAMs). Furthermore, as the temperature is increased, the SAMs dissolve into the gold nanoparticle, creating a liquid mixture at temperatures much lower than the melting temperature of the gold nanoparticle. By analyzing the mechanical and chemical properties of gold nanoparticles at temperatures below the melting point of gold, with different SAM chain lengths and surface coverage properties, we have determined that the system is metastable. The model and computational results that provide support for this hypothesis are presented in this paper.

Book excerpt: Long-chain omega-hydroxyalkanethiols (HS(CH2)nOH) coordinate to gold surfaces through the sulphur atom and produce ordered, hydrophilic monolayers in which the hydroxyl groups are exposed at the outer surface. Coadsorption of two omega-hydroxyalkanethiols of different chain lengths, n, results in formation of a monolayer having a disordered surface region that is markedly less hydrophilic than the homogeneous, hydroxylic surface formed from either pure compound. By controlling the composition of the monolayer, it is also possible to control simultaneously the degree of order in the surface and its hydrophilicity. In the monolayers containing a mixture of alkanethiol components, these components apparently do not phase-segregate into macroscopic islands, but are dispersed on a molecular scale. Book excerpt: This thesis addresses the fabrication and investigation of the optical response of gold nanoparticle arrays supported on insulating LiF(110) nanopatterned substrates. Motivated by the discovery of the intriguing effects that arise when electromagnetic radiation interacts with metallic nanostructures, the thesis focuses on the application of bottom-up approaches to the fabrication of extended-area plasmonic nanostructures, and the optimization of their optical response. By developing a sophisticated effective-medium model and comparing the experimental findings with model calculations, the author explores the role of the interparticle electromagnetic coupling and array dimensionality on the collective plasmonic behavior of the array, giving insights into the physical mechanisms governing the optical response.
