Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Considerations in Energy Production contains submissions by energy professionals from around the world who discuss a wide selection of topics on energy production, including coal mining, oil and gas production, and electrical power generation, as well as the impacts on society and the environment. The papers present existing and emerging issues, best practices and techniques, and appropriate and innovative solutions to meet the present and future challenges of energy production. These proceedings contain both complete papers as well as abstracts where a full paper was not warranted. The abstracts are included as a resource to readers who may be interested in contacting those individuals. The papers range from reviews of work previously completed and discussions of preliminary investigations to thorough reports of research and recommended changes in methodologies and procedures. The issues presented show how the environmental impacts of energy production affect community well-being and human health.

Book Synopsis Coal Waste Impoundments by : National Research Council
Download or read book Coal Waste Impoundments written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-01-07 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On October 11, 2000, a breakthrough of Martin County Coal Corporation's coal waste impoundment released 250 million gallons of slurry in near Inez, Kentucky. The 72-acre surface impoundment for coal processing waste materials broke through into a nearby underground coal mine. Although the spill caused no loss of human life, environmental damage was significant, and local water supplies were disrupted. This incident prompted Congress to request the National Research Council to examine ways to reduce the potential for similar accidents in the future. This book covers the engineering practices and standards for coal waste impoundments and ways to evaluate, improve, and monitor them; the accuracy of mine maps and ways to improve surveying and mapping of mines; and alternative technologies for coal slurry disposal and utilization. The book contains advice for multiple audiences, including the Mine Safety and Health Administration, the Office of Surface Mining, and other federal agencies; state and local policymakers and regulators; the coal industry and its consultants; and scientists and engineers.

Book excerpt: Sudden death among sewage workers is the most familiar form of hydrogen sulphide poisoning. This colorless, flammable gas has a characteristic odor of rotten eggs. It is produced naturally and as a result of human activity. Natural sources include nonspecific and anaerobic bacterial reduction of sulphates and sulphur-containing organic compounds. Hydrogen sulphide is found naturally in crude petroleum, natural gas, volcanic gases, and hot springs. It is also found in ground water. It is released from stagnant or polluted waters and manure or coal pits. In the industry, it is used as an intermediate in the manufacture of sulphuric acid and inorganic sulphides and as an agricultural disinfectant.--Publisher's description.
