Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The result of decades of research by a pioneer in the field, this is the first book to deal exclusively with achieving high-performance metal-polymer composites by chemical bonding. Covering both the academic and practical aspects, the author focuses on the chemistry of interfaces between metals and polymers with a particular emphasis on the chemical bonding between the different materials. He elucidates the various approaches to obtaining a stable interface, including, but not limited to, thermodynamically driven redox reactions, bond protection to prevent hydrolysis, the introduction of barrier layers, and stabilization by spacer molecules. Throughout, chemical bonding is promoted as a simple and economically viable alternative to adhesion based on reversible weak physical interaction. Consequently, the text equips readers with the practical tools necessary for designing high-strength metal-polymer composites with such desired properties as resilience, flexibility, rigidity or degradation resistance.

This book was released on 1990 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is an analytical technique in which the Raman scattering cross-sections of molecules adsorbed onto the roughened surfaces of certain metals are enhanced by as much as six orders of magnitude compared to their value for normal Raman scattering. Many models have been proposed to explain SERS, but it is now considered that most of the enhancement is related to two mechanisms. The first is associated with the large electric fields that can be induced at the surfaces of metal particles having small radii of curvature. The second is associated with formation of charge-transfer complexes between the adsorbed molecules and the substrate. Enhancement due to the charge transfer mechanism is obtained only for molecules immediately adjacent to the surface, but enhancement due to electromagnetic mechanism may extend several monolayers away from the surface. Considering that normal Raman scattering by polymers is weak and that scattering by molecules adjacent to the substrate is strongly enhanced, it is evident that SERS can be used for non-destructive characterization of interfaces between polymer films and metals as long as the films are not so thick that scattering by the bulk of the film is comparable in intensity to SERS from the interface. Keywords: DD Form 1473, Nondestructive characterization, Polymer/Metal interfaces, Surface-enhanced raman scattering, SERS, Adsorption, Silver, Acrylic adhesive system.

Book excerpt: Materials scientists, polymer chemists, surface physicists and materials engineers will find this book a complete and detailed treatise on the field of polymer brushes, their synthesis, characterization and manifold applications. In a first section, the various synthetic pathways and different surface materials are introduced and explained, followed by a second section covering important aspects of characterization and analysis in both flat surfaces and particles. These specific surface initiated polymerization (SIP) systems such as linear polymers, homopolymers, block copolymers, and hyperbranched polymers are unique compared to previously reported systems by chemisorption or physisorption. They have found their way in both large-scale and miniature applications of polymer brushes, which is covered in the last section. Such 'hairy' surfaces offer fascinating opportunities for addressing numerous problems of both academic and, in particular, industrial interest: high-quality, functional or protective coatings, composite materials, surface engineered particles, metal-organic interfaces, biological applications, micro-patterning, colloids, nanoparticles, functional devices, and many more. It is the desire of the authors that this book will be of benefit to readers who want to "brush-up on polymers".

Book excerpt: This book presents the analysis of up-to-date techniques used for the determination of acid-base properties in view of their applicability to examination of solid organic and inorganic surfaces. The studies have been carried out by the authors since 1993, showing experimental data on surface properties of more than 150 polymers, such as carbocatenary and heterochain polymers, copolymers and their blends, as well as different epoxy and rubber compositions used in adhesive joints. The adhesive ability of metal-polymer systems based on epoxy compositions, polyolefins, and rubbers was studied as a function of absolute difference in acid-base properties of adhesive and adherends, and the possibility to predict adhesive interaction on this basis was experimentally verified. The book shows the important role that acid-base interactions play in establishing interfacial adhesive-adherent contact and outlines practical recommendations regarding parameters of quantitative estimation of acid-base surface properties that implies the relationship with adhesive ability in polymer-metal systems. Creating polymeric materials with greater strength characteristics when in contact with metals is the most important problem when adhesive joints are designed. The authors obtained experimental data for thermodynamic and acid-base properties of about 200 organic and inorganic surfaces that find a wide practical application. These results may be used as a reference source to predict the adhesive ability of different coating systems. The possibility to predict adhesive interaction of adhesive with adherend, taking into account the absolute difference in their acidity and basicity, was verified experimentally.

Book excerpt: This volume includes contributions to the 10th Dresden Polymer Discussion which was held in Meißen near Dresden from April 10 to 13, 2005 organized by the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden and the Institute of Macromolecular and Textile Chemistry of the Technische Universität Dresden. The meeting was focussed on Characterization of Polymer Surfaces and Thin Films. Comprehensive characterization of surfaces and interfaces is essential to relate surface and thin film properties to micro structure and molecular origin, which is, on the other hand, the key to technological control and improvement of materials. The contributions in this volume cover a representative spectrum of surface sensitive techniques and their application to polymer surface and thin film characterization as well as recent examples of technologically relevant materials and process development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two separate, but interacting research groups began a program entailing molecular level syntheses and characterization of metal-polymer interfaces. Two general synthetic routes were followed: In one case, a metal surface (platinum) was cleaned of its oxide layer by carrying out a hydrogenation reaction (hexene or cyclohexene) using the metal surface as the catalyst. Under these conditions, platinum oxide is unstable and is reduced to platinum(0) and water. The reaction was then deliberately poisoned with 4-picoline. Monitoring the kinetics of hydrogenation before and after the addition of the poison allowed us to determine that approx. 70% of the hydrogenation sites were ligated. The amount of 4-picoline that adsorbed was determined by elemental analysis, gravimetric analysis and UV-vis analysis of the solution. The surface-confined picoline was then deprotonated to render the ligated lithium reagent which was used to initiate the polymerization of styrene. The thin film of polystyrene prepared in this manner was irreversibly attached to the platinum surface. The platinum-polystyrene interface was studied by a range of analytical techniques. The platinum-polystyrene interface was studied by a range of analytical techniques. In the other case, a metal-polymer interface was prepared by polymer adsorption: Polystyrene containing one terminal thiol group and styrene-propylene sulfide block copolymers were allowed to adsorb on evaporated gold films supported on glass. The resulting supported films were characterized by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, external reflectance infrared spectroscopy and scintillation counting of radioisotope-labeled polymers.
