Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface Active Ethylene Oxide Adducts covers the fundamental problems associated with the surface active ethylene oxide adduct. This book contains six chapters that consider the progress on modifications of ethylene oxide adducts. The opening chapters examine the preparation and industrial application of ethylene oxide adducts. These chapters provide a formulation based on the starting materials and divides the ethylene oxide adducts in different classes according to the bond between the hydrophobic and the hydrophilic part of the molecule. The next chapters describe the physical, chemical, and functional properties of these adducts. These chapters also look into the biodegradability and industrial uses of ethoxylated products, with an emphasis on their applications to the mineral oil industry. These topics are followed by discussions of the chemical modifications of ethylene oxide adducts, including etherification of the terminal hydroxyl group with aliphatic or cyclic, hydrophobic radicals and carboxymethylation of adducts. The final chapter focuses on the analytical methods used in the industrial control laboratory an in product analysis. This book is intended primarily for laboratory chemists, plant chemists, and chemical engineers.

Book excerpt: The worldwide consumption of surfactants now exceeds several million tonnes per annum. Six ofthe major types represent approximately 80% ofthe volume consumed, whereas the remaining 20% is made up of approximately 40 different chemical types. Commercially produced surface active agents are not pure chemicals, and within each chemical type there can be tremendous variation. Technical staff who are not familiar with surfactants are frequently bewildered by the enormous variety of different products on the market and the vast body of literature which exists on the composition and properties of surfactants. The selection of the best surfactant for any given use therefore becomes a major problem. This volume arose from the clear need to have available a simple reference book summarising the different types of surfactants on the market and their properties. The concept and structure of the book evolved from early attempts to define chemical structure/property relationships of all the different types of surfactants commercially available, into a simple handbook providing essential background information for the surfactant user. It is realised that most users will be developing their own data bank of structure/end use property relationships and they will therefore be the experts on end use.

Book excerpt: The 52nd Colloid and Surface Science Symposium of the Divis ion of Colloid and Surface Chemistry of the American Chemical Society was held in Knoxville, TN, June 12-14, 1978, and one of its Sections was devoted to the topic of Solution Chemistry of Surfactants. Although it was billed as the Section on Solution Chemistry of Surfactants, but it was indeed a veritable inter national symposium on this topic as 51 papers by about 100 con tributors from 12 countries were listed in the program. The present volume and its companion volume 2 document the proceedings of the above-mentioned Section on Solution Chemistry of Surfactants. In 1976 there was held an international symposium on Micellization, Solubilization and Microemulsions in Albany, l the proceedings of which have been chronicled in two volumes. A great deal of material dealing with micelles contributed by a legion of prominent researchers constitutes these volumes but a few subtopics were not adequately covered; so it was deemed appro priate to cover these topics as well as the recent progress in the general area of aggregation of surfactants in this Section. Also as it is the amphiphilicity or amphipathicity* of a surfact ant molecule which is responsible for both adsorption at inter faces and aggregation in solution, so it was considered quite apropos to include the topic of adsorption at interfaces in this Section. Concomitantly, the present volumes not only cover the aggregation phenomena but also the adsorption at interfaces.

They find widespread application in personal care, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and the food industry. The main objective of this graduate level textbook is to present an overview of the classification, physical properties, phase behavior, their effects and applications of surfactants, e.g. as emulsifiers, foam stabilizer, in nano- and microemulsions and as wetting agents.

Book excerpt: While currently available titles either focus on the basics or on very specific subtopics, this text meets the need for a comprehensive survey of surfactants and their properties, with a strong emphasis on applications and their correlation to the fundamentals. The author covers their classification, physical properties, phase behavior, adsorption, effects - such as wetting, spreading and adhesion - as well as industrial applications in personal care and cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and food products. Professor Tadros is a well-known expert on the topic of surfactants, with much experience in colloid science. Here, he uses his industrial experience to close the gap between fundamentals of surfactants and their relevance and applications in practice.

Book excerpt: The extraordinary growth in the production and use of man-made fibers over the past fewdecades has focused attention on the surface properties of fibers and textiles. This volumecombines surface science and technology in its presentation of the substantial progressthat has been made in the technology related to the surface characteristics of natural, synthetic, and glass fibers and textiles.Adopting an interdisciplinary approach , the coverage places emphasis upon the wetting, soiling, staining, frictional, and adhesive properties of fibers and fabrics, as well asphenomena related to these properties. The book offers critical reviews which describeexperimental facts, theories, and processes. Symbols are clearly defined in each chapter.Among the subjects covered are the surface properties of glass fibers, soil release, stainand water repellance, friction of fabrics, bonding of nonwovens, and the wetting of fibers.Surface Characteristics of Fibers and Textiles, Part II is an outstanding textbook forcourses dealing with surface chemistry, the mechanical properties of textiles, textiletechnology, and polymer chemistry . It is also a valuable reference book designed to makecurrent knowledge on these subjects accessible to industrial and academic researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OILS AND FATS AS RAW MATERIALS FOR INDUSTRY This new volume emphasizes the sources, structure, chemistry, treatment, modification, and potential applications for oils and fats as raw materials in industry. Oils and fats can be used as raw materials in many industries including food and agriculture, as surfactants in laundry detergents and cosmetics, as well as in pharmaceuticals. Moreover, unsaturated vegetable oils are also suitable to form epoxides and hence, are important in the manufacturing of paints and adhesives. Limited sources of petrochemicals and their harmful effects on health and the environment also promote the use of naturally occurring oils and fats as biodiesel after some chemical modification. Moreover, a vast variety of nonedible oils that can be obtained from easily cultivable plant species are receiving great interest from researchers because they not only yield cost-effective products but are also proven as a substrate to promote sustainable research. In this book, the editors will cover all possible industrial applications of the products that are formed using edible and non-edible vegetable oils. Vegetable oils are not a new research area, although they are considered an evergreen or long-lasting topic as most of the research in synthetic chemistry has been carried out on vegetable oils.
