Book excerpt: Surface Active Chemicals resents a number of applications of surface activity. This book provides a discussion of bulk solution phase properties, which is important for proper understanding of surface phenomena. Organized into seven chapters, this book begins with an overview of the works of cohesion of some organic liquids and their woks of adhesion to water. This text then describes the properties of ordinary soaps, which consist of blends of alkali–metal or organic base salts of fatty acids of from eight to eighteen carbon atoms. Other chapters consider the characteristic of soapy lather by the addition of excess fatty acid to soap, which raises its proportion in the surface layer still further and tends to make the lather even creamier. This book discusses as well the processes for the extraction of bone glue. The final chapter deals with the statistics of production and sales for soaps and detergents. This book is a valuable resource for chemists and senior students.

Book excerpt: Surfactants are used throughout industry as components in a hugerange of formulated products or as effect chemicals in theproduction or processing of other materials. A detailedunderstanding of the basis of their activity is required by allthose who use surfactants, yet the new graduate or postgraduatechemist or chemical engineer will generally have little or noexperience of how and why surfactants work. Chemistry & Technology of Surfactants is aimed at newgraduate or postgraduate level chemists and chemical engineers atthe beginning their industrial careers and those in later life whobecome involved with surfactants for the first time. The book is astraightforward and practical survey of the chemistry ofsurfactants and their uses, providing a basic introduction tosurfactant theory, information on the various types of surfactantand some application details. This will allow readers to build ontotheir scientific education the concepts and principles on which thesuccessful use of surfactants, across a wide range of industries,is based.

Book excerpt: "Two common terms used to describe surface-active materials are amphiphiles and surfactants. The term amphiphile is derived from Greek-amphis meaning "both" and philia meaning "love or friendship." An amphiphilic chemical is a chemical whose molecular structure has one or more hydrophilic groups and one or more hydrophobic groups. Another Greek-derived synonymic term used to describe amphiphilic chemicals is amphipathic (amphis meaning "both" and pátheia meaning "feeling"). Because all surfactants possess hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups, they are termed as amphiphilic or amphipathic compounds. The term surfactant, a contraction of surface-active agent, implies the material is active at surfaces. Surfactants have the tendency to adsorb at surfaces as well as interfaces. The difference between surfaces and interfaces is that surfaces involve a gas, usually air, as one of the phases, and the interfaces are boundaries between two immiscible phases. Five interfaces are possible from three common states of matter (solid, liquid, and gas)"--

Book excerpt: The worldwide consumption of surfactants now exceeds several million tonnes per annum. Six ofthe major types represent approximately 80% ofthe volume consumed, whereas the remaining 20% is made up of approximately 40 different chemical types. Commercially produced surface active agents are not pure chemicals, and within each chemical type there can be tremendous variation. Technical staff who are not familiar with surfactants are frequently bewildered by the enormous variety of different products on the market and the vast body of literature which exists on the composition and properties of surfactants. The selection of the best surfactant for any given use therefore becomes a major problem. This volume arose from the clear need to have available a simple reference book summarising the different types of surfactants on the market and their properties. The concept and structure of the book evolved from early attempts to define chemical structure/property relationships of all the different types of surfactants commercially available, into a simple handbook providing essential background information for the surfactant user. It is realised that most users will be developing their own data bank of structure/end use property relationships and they will therefore be the experts on end use.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface active agents are used as process aids in the production of polymers--as additives to impart or modify polymer properties--and in the formulation and further processing of polymeric systems for a variety of applications. In all these uses, the surfactants are used as 'effect chemicals,' to impart specific performance characteristics or properties to the base polymer or to enhance it performance when formulated for a specific end use. This volume focuses on those surfactant areas incorporating the greatest number of supplier and user companies. Authors have been selected from leading industrial and academic laboratories around the world. It provides an introduction to the underlying chemistry and technology in these industrial areas, and at the same time, highlights important recent developments. Surfactants in Polymers, Coatings, Inks and Adhesives is a book for surfactant researchers and for manufacturers and users of surfactants. In particular, surfactant chemists, analytical chemists, environmental chemists, users of surfactant formulations in the fields of specialty chemicals, polymers, and detergents, and health and safety personnel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface Active Agents (surfactants) are vital components in biological systems, form key ingredients in consumer products and play an important role in many industrial processes. For example, cell membranes owe their structure to the aggregation of surfactants known as lipids which form a major component of the membrane. Other natural surfactants occur in the digestive system, in the lungs, and even in such substances as crude oil. Man-made surfactants are used in a wide range of domestic and industrial products and processes. In addition to detergents and personal care products, surfactants have found uses in almost every branch of the chemical industry as well as in several other industries. These include dyestuffs, fibres, mineral process ing, oil field chemicals, paints, pesticides, pharmaceuticals and plastics. Surfactants are versatile materials which are manufactured in a huge variety of forms to suit all of these applications. As a result of their importance, the technical literature on all aspects of surfactant behaviour is now very extensive. Surprisingly, however, the treatment in textbooks has been somewhat fragmented, often in the form of conference proceedings or edited, multi-authored works, both lacking in continuity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The awareness and development of 'biodegradable' surfactants pre-dates current pressures by the environmental movement by nearly three decades, wherein a responsible industry mutually agreed to replace 'hard', non-biodegradable com ponents of household detergents by 'soft', biodegradable alternatives, without course to legislation. The only requirement at that time was for surfactants used in detergents to exhibit a 'primary biodegradability' in excess of 80%; this referring to the disap pearance or removal from solution of the intact surface active material as de tected by specified analytical techniques. This proved useful, as observed environmental impacts of surfactants, e.g. visible foam on rivers, are associated with the intact molecule. Test methods for 'primary biodegradability' were eventually enshrined in EU legislation for nonionic surfactants (Directive 821242/EEC, amended 73/404IEEC) and for anionic surfactants (Directive 8212431EEC, amended 73/405IEEC). No approved test methods and resultant legislation have been developed for cationic and amphoteric surfactants to date. The environmental classification of chemical substances, which of course includes surfactants, and associated risk assessment utilises a second criterion 'ready biodegradability'. This may be assessed by a number of methods which monitor oxygen uptake (BOD), carbon dioxide production or removal of dis solved organic carbon (DOC). Some surfactants which comply with the above Detergents Directive are borderline when it comes to 'ready biodegradability'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existing surfactants directories tend to focus on product identification by tradename, producer or chemical type, enabling the user only to identify product equivalents and surfactant suppliers. Application information, where available, is usually scant or given as a footnote. This new directory approaches the identification of surfactants primarily from the applications standpoint. Hence the formulator or end-user can readily assess the products available for use in a particular industry sector and select materials giving the required surface active properties. For example, a formulator of agrochemicals for crop protection can turn to the section which refers to surfactants for use in the agrochemical industry and then easily identify a wetter/dispersant system for the production of water dispersible granules. Information is presented in an alternative format in the second part of the directory, which will help the user to identify swiftly products for a particular application by surface active properties. It is difficult, if not impossible, to identify an industry which does not directly or indirectly utilise surfactants. Therefore it has proved necessary to simplify industry classifications to encompass a variety of uses under broader sector titles. The industry classifications adopted here have been used in many previous publications and papers, and define as accurately as possible the major industries and applications serviced by the surfactant industry. The editors have been particularly pleased with the support and response of the industry in the supply of data.
