Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains ten papers that have been collected by the Canadian Society for History and Philosophy of Mathematics/Société canadienne d’histoire et de philosophie des mathématiques. It showcases rigorously-reviewed contemporary scholarship on an interesting variety of topics in the history and philosophy of mathematics from the seventeenth century to the modern era. The volume begins with an exposition of the life and work of Professor Bolesław Sobociński. It then moves on to cover a collection of topics about twentieth-century philosophy of mathematics, including Fred Sommers’s creation of Traditional Formal Logic and Alexander Grothendieck’s work as a starting point for discussing analogies between commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. Continuing the focus on the philosophy of mathematics, the next selections discuss the mathematization of biology and address the study of numerical cognition. The volume then moves to discussing various aspects of mathematics education, including Charles Davies’s early book on the teaching of mathematics and the use of Gaussian Lemniscates in the classroom. A collection of papers on the history of mathematics in the nineteenth century closes out the volume, presenting a discussion of Gauss’s “Allgemeine Theorie des Erdmagnetismus” and a comparison of the geometric works of Desargues and La Hire. Written by leading scholars in the field, these papers are accessible not only to mathematicians and students of the history and philosophy of mathematics, but also to anyone with a general interest in mathematics.

Book excerpt: This volume in its first part reproduces the treatises and papers wherein Professor H.A. Lorentz developed the electromagnetic theory of phenomena in moving systems up to the point achieved in the relativity theory of uniform translations. We have not included the article in the Encyclopaedie der mathematischen Wissenschaften, Vol. V, number I4, nor the book "Theory of Electrons", for reasons given previously. The second part of the volume contains the work on the theory ot gravitation. In the early development of the theory the author lays stress on the hypothesis of the stagnant ether, and he so firmly believes in the validity of his formula for the ponderomotive force on electric charges, that he is even prepared to abandon the momentum conservation law (see p. 28). It was Max Abraham who in I903 reconciled Lorentz's formula for the force with the conservation law by interpreting the term at fault as the representation of electromagnetic momentum per unit volume of the field, thus meeting the criticism of Henri Poincare. This interpretation was readily taken over by Lorentz. Again, referring to the transformation formula tor the time variable, Professor Lorentz preferred to think 0/ "local time" as a mathematical auxiliary. A dmitting and even stressing the impossibility of discrimin ating experimentally between local time and absolute time, he never relinquished the belief that the latter words might have a meaning after all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social reformer, banker, and mathematician, Olinde Rodrigues is a fascinating figure in nineteenth-century Paris. Information about him is obscure--scattered in publications on history, mathematics, and the social sciences--and often inaccurate. Rodrigues left no papers or archives. Here, for the first time, is an authoritative account of his family history, education, and important mathematical works. Written by a team of prominent mathematicians and historians, the book comprisesthe interests and associations that make Rodrigues such a remarkable character in the history of mathematics. This is a superb panorama of nineteenth-century France, portrayed through the life and work of Olinde Rodrigues. The beginning chapters attempt to recreate the scientific and socialbackground of nineteenth-century Paris and Rodrigues's place in it. The following chapters discuss his contributions to a variety of mathematical fields (e.g., orthogonal polynomials, combinatorics, and rotations). The final chapters discuss contemporary reactions to his mathematical work. Sufficient background is given to make it accessible to readers familiar with basic college mathematics. The book is suitable for specialists in the history of mathematics and/or science, graduate students, and mathematicians.

Book excerpt: The aims of this book are: • to contribute to professional development of those directly involved in science education (science teachers, elementary and secondary science teacher advisors, researchers in science education, etc), • to contribute to the improvement of the quality of science education at all levels of education with the exploitation of elements from History of Science incorporated in science teaching –it is argued that through such approaches the students’ motivation can be raised, their romantic understanding can be developed and consequently their conceptual understanding of science concepts can be improved since these approaches make science more attractive to them– and • to contribute to the debate about science education at the international level in order to find new ways for further inquiry on the issues that the book is dealing with. The book is divided in two parts: The first expounds its philosophical and epistemological framework and the second combines theory and praxis, the theoretical insights with their practical applications.
