Book excerpt: This study, based on survey and interview data, seeks to understand how and why teachers in Catholic schools can be supported in their own spiritual development. The research describes and suggests ways to support and nurture spiritual formation for those who accept the vocation of teaching in Catholic schools. Employing survey and interview methods, this inquiry is philosophically rooted in four Lonergan precepts of human consciousness. Be attentive; be intelligent; be reasonable; be responsible. The study begins with attentiveness to the researcher's personal experience followed by an attending to the literature relevant to that lived situation. The formation of an intelligent inquiry into the questions arising from the named experiences deepens into a reasonable and responsible summary of the knowledge gained through the research. Teachers from a small urban/rural Catholic school district were surveyed. Of the 267 surveys distributed, 112 were completed and returned (42%). From those surveyed, five volunteers were selected to be interviewed, responding to nine questions regarding spiritual formation and the factors contributing to it. Recommendations that may nurture the spiritual development of teachers in Catholic schools are put forth in the concluding chapter of the thesis. These include recognizing teaching as ministry and supporting it as such; remaining attentive to the life questions of those in the vocation of teaching; leadership through example and witness; and nurturing the building of rich, authentic relationships in the school community.

In public schools, this is required by legal mandates. In Catholic schools, this serves as an expression of Catholic Identity. In accordance with Catholic Social Teaching (CST), Catholic schools are ethically bound by moral directives to support all students, to the greatest extent possible. To allow students with special education needs to fully participate in the school community, traditional models of separate but equal education must be reconsidered. Professional development training for general education teachers will allow them to develop a level of confidence and competence in their new role as lead teacher for students with special education needs. The purpose of this study was to examine the types of professional development that should be provided in order to allow general education teachers to meet the needs of special education students in general education classrooms. The findings obtained from archival data on students and teachers, surveys, focus groups, interviews, and classroom observations indicate that professional development can assist teachers in shifting their mental models and instructional practices to allow them to successfully educate students with a wide range of academic abilities. This includes training in the needs of special education students, gifted students, and differentiated instruction.

In most cases, these schools do not have the necessary resources or information on how best to serve these students. The purpose of this study is to evaluate a local K-8 Catholic school's current special education program(s) and to document strategies and services that can be implemented in this school setting to serve students with special needs. A review of the literature revealed that teachers in a Catholic school setting are not aware of how to work with and best serve students with special needs. This study involves survey results from teachers, administrators, and support staff in an effort to help support all students and their needs at a local Catholic elementary school. Results indicated that teachers were not especially educated or well qualified in special education instruction. Almost half of the teachers, administrators, and support staff felt "somewhat prepared" to teach students with special needs. Participants in this study desire more trainings and information on students' specific disabilities and how best to work with these students in their classrooms. This study included a small and closed sample site. Only one school's experience with special needs students and opinion of admitting students with special needs was documented. Implications of this study include the staffing of more qualified and trained teachers and more resources available to the students and teachers.

Book excerpt: Although Catholic schools are the largest sector of the national private and faith-based educational market, the overall student enrollment in Catholic K-12 schools has steadily declined. In order for Catholic schools to remain sustainable and competitive among the many different educational options in the twenty-first century, they must set themselves apart from other schools by offering unique learning opportunities that support twenty-first century education while promoting Catholic educational values. Recognizing the need for updated teaching practices, balanced pedagogy with Catholic educational values, and focused research on Catholic education, this two-year multiple-case study explored the instructional practices of eight middle level Catholic teachers during an initiative focused on shifting instructional strategies to support twenty-first century education supported by educational technology integration. Teaching practices were documented through participant observations, interviews, survey, and historical and field evidence. Data illuminated much variability in teachers' interpretations of twenty-first century education, classroom practice, and levels of technology integration. All teachers encouraged creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration in their instruction, however these specific domains of learning were primarily supported through an emphasis on lower order cognitive skills and processes. Although evidence suggested consistent technology integration in classrooms, technology was primarily used to substitute or augment instruction as opposed to the transformation of teaching and learning to support twenty-first century education. Data also revealed a balance between Catholic educational values and new teaching pedagogies except in Religion classes or instruction. This finding suggested content subject culture was a confounding aspect to instructional practices. This study highlights suggestions for teacher practice that include rethinking the purpose and structure of assessment, balancing personal opinions of technology with twenty-first century instruction, and shifting teacher-student classroom roles to foster teaching and learning environments that support creativity. Furthermore, additional implications for teachers and policy makers center on collaboration as a model for student learning, and to promote a shared vision for Catholic education in the twenty-first century. The implications for future research focus on expanding the study to include school level influencing factors and participants, centering on Religion class as the context, and the inclusion of students' perspectives.

Book excerpt: This explanatory sequential mixed method study investigated self-efficacy for including students with learning disabilities in Catholic schools. Three research questions explored each related to teaching students with learning disabilities: (1) What contributes to Catholic teachers' self-efficacy? (2) How do Catholic school teachers describe their experiences? and (3) What do Catholic school teachers feel they need to be successful? The first phase used the Teaching Students with Disabilities Efficacy Scale (TSDES), revealing three variables: coursework in special education, experience teaching or personal experience supporting a person with learning disabilities that yielded significant differences. In the second phase, three themes emerged from interviews: Living the Catholic Teacher Vocation, Developing the Parent/School Relationship , and Creating the Space for Inclusion to Happen. These findings supported the importance of previous experience, coursework/professional development, teacher collaboration, and of leadership. Recommendations were made for Catholic leaders looking to build inclusive learning environments, and for further research.
