Book excerpt: Excerpt from List of Various Accounts and Documents Connected Therewith, Formerly Preserved in the Exchequer and Now in the Public Record Office The practice of Declaring Accoun'ts(11) for the purpose of avoiding the delay caused by the pressure of business in the Exchequer does not materially affect the description here given of the process of passing accounts, since the Declared Account took the place of the old Compotas and one of the copies was duly sent on for enrolment. It will be found that some of the later accounts in the following List belong properly to the Pipe Office series of Declared Accounts. Being precisely similar in nature and filling gaps in that series. In other cases, the Account will be found in the Pipe Office series and the particulars and vouchers here. Some later Particulars will be found among the records of the Audit Office, and many have doubtless perished. It must be remembered that this list, being based primarily on Mr. Hunter's classification of' subjects, does not exhibit the organic inter-dependence of accounts and their vouchers referred to above. No clear line can, for instance, be drawn between Army and Works in regard to Castles, or again, between Works and Forests.
