Book Synopsis Semiempirical Methods of Electronic Structure Calculation by : Gerald Segal
Download or read book Semiempirical Methods of Electronic Structure Calculation written by Gerald Segal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If one reflects upon the range of chemical problems accessible to the current quantum theoretical methods for calculations on the electronic structure of molecules, one is immediately struck by the rather narrow limits imposed by economic and numerical feasibility. Most of the systems with which experimental photochemists actually work are beyond the grasp of ab initio methods due to the presence of a few reasonably large aromatic ring systems. Potential energy surfaces for all but the smallest molecules are extremely expensive to produce, even over a restricted group of the possible degrees of freedom, and molecules containing the higher elements of the periodic table remain virtually untouched due to the large numbers of electrons involved. Almost the entire class of molecules of real biological interest is simply out of the question. In general, the theoretician is reduced to model systems of variable appositeness in most of these fields. The fundamental problem, from a basic computational point of view, is that large molecules require large numbers of basis functions, whether Slater type orbitals or Gaussian functions suitably contracted, to provide even a modestly accurate description of the molecular electronic environment. This leads to the necessity of dealing with very large matrices and numbers of integrals within the Hartree-Fock approximation and quickly becomes both numerically difficult and uneconomic.
Download or read book Quantum Chemistry written by John P. Lowe and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lowe's new edition assumes little mathematical or physical sophistication and emphasizes an understanding of the techniques and results of quantum chemistry. It can serve as a primary text in quantum chemistry courses, and enables students and researchers to comprehend the current literature. This third edition has been thoroughly updated and includes numerous new exercises to facilitate self-study and solutions to selected exercises. Assumes little initial mathematical or physical sophistication, developing insights and abilities in the context of actual problems Provides thorough treatment of the simple systems basic to this subject Emphasizes UNDERSTANDING of the techniques and results of modern quantum chemistry Treats MO theory from simple Huckel through ab intio methods in current use Develops perturbation theory through the topics of orbital interaction as well as spectroscopic selection rules Presents group theory in a context of MO applications Includes qualitative MO theory of molecular structure, Walsh rules, Woodward-Hoffmann rules, frontier orbitals, and organic reactions Develops MO theory of periodic systems, with applications to organic polymers.

Download or read book Quantum Chemistry written by John Lowe and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum Chemistry covers the basic principles, methods, and results of quantum chemistry, providing insights on electron behavior. This book is organized into 14 chapters that focus on ground state molecular orbital theory. After briefly dealing with some of the concepts of classical physics, the book goes on describing some simple but important particle systems. It then examines several systems with discontinuous potential energies, such as the simple harmonic oscillator and the hydrogen-like ion system. A chapter presents a set of postulates and theorems that form the formal foundation of quantum mechanics. Considerable chapters are devoted to various quantum chemical methods, as well as their basic features and application to molecular orbital evaluation. These methods include Huckel molecular orbital, variation, linear variation, extended Huckel, and SCF-LCAO-MO. The concluding chapters deal with the development of theories for molecular orbital, including time-independent Rayleigh-Schrodinger perturbation, group, and qualitative molecular orbital theories. Supplemental texts of the more complicated derivations or proofs and problems encountered in quantum chemistry are also provided. This book is an introductory text intended for organic, inorganic, and physical chemists, as well as for graduate and undergraduate students.

Download or read book Stereodynamics of Molecular Systems written by Ramaswamy H. Sarma and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stereodynamics of Molecular Systems covers the proceedings of a symposium held at the State University of New York at Albany, on 23-24 April 1979. The book focuses on the stereodynamics of molecules and ions and nucleic acid structure. The contributions tackle spectroscopy, crystallography, perturbations, and electron-transfer reactions. The selection first offers information on nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy chemical shifts, coupling constants, and molecular geometry, including chemical shifts, bond coupling constants, and constitutional features of nucleic acids. The book then takes a look at nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy stereodynamics of small molecules; nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy solution dynamics of polymer chains; and single crystal crystallography. The publication evaluates the steric effects on electron-transfer reactions of sulfonamides; effects of isotopic perturbation on NMR spectra; and conformational mobility of the backbone of cyclic tripeptides. The book also discusses accessible surface areas of nucleic acids and their relation to folding, conformational transition, and protein recognition. Topics include polarity of exposed atoms, surface of DNA double helices, transfer RNA, and calculation of “static“ accessible surface area. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in the stereodynamics of molecules and ions and nucleic acid structure.
