Book Synopsis Geotechnical Interpretations in Field Practice by : Anjan Patel
Download or read book Geotechnical Interpretations in Field Practice written by Anjan Patel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2024-02-17 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition to field test results and theoretical knowledge, interpretation and engineering judgement on the available factual data is essential for proper planning and execution of ground investigation. Maximum subsurface information can be extracted with lesser budget if proper interpretation is made. In other words, no amount of site investigation is adequate without proper interpretation and application of engineering judgement. With this in consideration in mind, this book provides special focus to the importance of interpretation and engineering judgement in geotechnical projects. Places an emphasis on the role of site interpretation and the application of engineering judgement Discusses project personnel and how they have to understood ground conditions to respond accordingly Includes real-life examples that will be of great help for all those involved in the planning and execution of geotechnical projects
Book Synopsis Handbook of Geotechnical Investigation and Design Tables by : Burt G. Look
Download or read book Handbook of Geotechnical Investigation and Design Tables written by Burt G. Look and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2007-04-26 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical handbook of properties for soils and rock contains, in a concise tabular format, the key issues relevant to geotechnical investigations, assessments and designs in common practice. In addition, there are brief notes on the application of the tables. These data tables are compiled for experienced geotechnical professionals who require a reference document to access key information. There is an extensive database of correlations for different applications. The book should provide a useful bridge between soil and rock mechanics theory and its application to practical engineering solutions. The initial chapters deal with the planning of the geotechnical investigation, the classification of the soil and rock properties and some of the more used testing is then covered. Later chapters show the reliability and correlations that are used to convert that data in the interpretative and assessment phase of the project. The final chapters apply some of these concepts to geotechnical design. This book is intended primarily for practicing geotechnical engineers working in investigation, assessment and design, but should provide a useful supplement for postgraduate courses.

Book Synopsis From Research to Practice in Geotechnical Engineering by : James E. Laier
Download or read book From Research to Practice in Geotechnical Engineering written by James E. Laier and published by ASCE Publications. This book was released on 2008 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Research to Practice in Geotechnical Engineering, GSP 180, honors Dr. John H. Schmertmann, Professor Emeritus and P.E., for his contributions to civil engineering. It begins with his biography, a list of his students and writings, followed by reprints of his selection of 16 representative papers from his career. Twenty-eight new, mostly invited papers follow on a great variety of subjects, including: the installation and testing of piles; pile-structure interaction; liquefaction and its mitigation; case histories of settlement and landslide mitigation and capping a superfund landfill; and computer modeling. The authors include six members of the National Academy of Engineering. This GSP concludes with a paper by one of these, Dr. Schmertmann, which itself concludes with a suggestion for improving your technical writing. Everyone working in the geotechnical profession will find something interesting and useful herein.

Book Synopsis Characteristics, Causes, and Implications of the 1998 Wasatch Front Landslides, Utah by : Francis X. Ashland
Download or read book Characteristics, Causes, and Implications of the 1998 Wasatch Front Landslides, Utah written by Francis X. Ashland and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2003 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of the 1998 Wasatch Front landslides were likely triggered following a cumulative rise in ground-water levels resulting from four or more successive years of above-normal precipitation. Triggering of landslide movement likely coincided with a transient ground-water-level rise associated with the spring snowmelt and contemporaneous above-normal precipitation. In most Wasatch Front areas, 1998 was the wettest as well as the last year of the precipitation period. An increase in landslide activity began in 1997, following two to four successive years of above-normal precipitation. This study examines the relation between the 1998 landslides and the 1995-98 precipitation period (1993-98 in Spanish Fork Canyon). Accordingly, this study investigates the significance of the most recent precipitation period in relation to the historical precipitation record, and compares it with the 1980-86 period. In addition, other causes of the 1998 landsliding are explored, most importantly hillside modification related to residential development. This study also examines several issues, and their implications, related to the 1998 Wasatch Front landslides including the susceptibility to reactivation of pre-existing landslides, consideration of the state of landslide activity, and the possibility of developing landslide-movement prediction tools based on an instability threshold concept. The majority of the landslides discussed occurred near urbanized areas of the Wasatch Front and consisted of either translational or rotational earth slides in pre-existing landslide areas. The discussion and conclusions are limited to these landslides and locations. The case histories presented provide new data intended to further the understanding of landslide hazards in the Wasatch Front.

Book Synopsis Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering by : Jay Ameratunga
Download or read book Correlations of Soil and Rock Properties in Geotechnical Engineering written by Jay Ameratunga and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-11 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a one-stop reference to the empirical correlations used extensively in geotechnical engineering. Empirical correlations play a key role in geotechnical engineering designs and analysis. Laboratory and in situ testing of soils can add significant cost to a civil engineering project. By using appropriate empirical correlations, it is possible to derive many design parameters, thus limiting our reliance on these soil tests. The authors have decades of experience in geotechnical engineering, as professional engineers or researchers. The objective of this book is to present a critical evaluation of a wide range of empirical correlations reported in the literature, along with typical values of soil parameters, in the light of their experience and knowledge. This book will be a one-stop-shop for the practising professionals, geotechnical researchers and academics looking for specific correlations for estimating certain geotechnical parameters. The empirical correlations in the forms of equations and charts and typical values are collated from extensive literature review, and from the authors' database.
