The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between the supervisory working alliance, supervisee nondisclosure (i.e., when a supervisee does not communicate information that would otherwise be shared with the supervisor), and counselor burnout, specifically in a sample of counselors, social workers, and psychologists pursuing their original state licenses. Nondisclosure was examined to determine if it was a mediator of the relationship between the supervisory working alliance and burnout. Participants (n = 288) completed a demographic questionnaire, the supervisee form of the Working Alliance Inventory (Bahrick, 1989), the Disclosure in Supervision Scale (Gunn & Pistole, 2012), and the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (Maslach, Jackson, & Leiter, 1997). Final analyses showed that supervisee nondisclosure did not mediate the relationship between the supervisory working alliance and burnout. However, the supervisory working alliance predicted nondisclosure (b = -.73, p

Book excerpt: Supervision has shifted from an authoritarian, didactic model to a relational one. The interpersonal dynamics between supervisor and supervisee are now seen as central to the development of a productive learning experience. As supervisors are becoming more sensitive to their trainee's vulnerability and anxiety, new frameworks for understanding and dealing with this shift are required. This book presents current thinking on such relevant issues as creating an optimal learning environment, establishing a safe space, developing an atmosphere of reflectivity, attuning oneself to the emotional experience of the supervisee, and encouraging the disclosure of the supervisee's countertransference.

Book excerpt: This dissertation examined the influence of the quality of the supervisory working alliance on work satisfaction and work-related stress for counselors in professional settings. A review of the literature provided an important theoretical and empirical foundation for the study, as well as theoretical antecedents for each construct and practical applications within the counseling profession. An empirical study was developed to identify counselors' perceptions of clinical supervision and its influence on work satisfaction and work-related stress. The Supervisory Working Alliance Inventory-Trainee (SWAI-T), the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire-Short Form (MSQ), the Occupational Roles Questionnaire (ORQ) subscale of the Occupational Stress Inventory-Revised (OSI-R), and a demographic questionnaire comprised the online survey. An invitation letter was mailed to 350 randomly selected members of the American Mental Health Counseling Association, of which 71 individuals returned useable surveys. Results yielded significant relationships between total scores on the SWAI-T and the MSQ, and total scores on the SWAI-T and the ORQ. A MANOVA revealed a significant relationship between the total scores on the SWAI-T and total scores on the combined MSQ and ORQ. Results revealed that when participants had higher scores on the SWAI-T, they tended to experience higher levels of work satisfaction and lower levels of workrelated stress. The discussion that follows addresses the implications for practice, training, and research, as well as the importance of the findings on future research.

Book excerpt: As higher education continues to integrate technology as a learning platform so has the counselor education field (Carlisle et al., 2017). This study examined how time spent in technology-assisted supervision influenced counselor supervisor self-efficacy, the supervisory working alliance, and supervisee performance in supervision using Social Cognitive Theory (SCT; Bandura, 1986) as the theoretical framework for the study. Participants in the study were 40 counselor supervisors who were either counselor educators or doctoral students in counselor education and provided weekly supervision to master's level counselors in training enrolled in either a practicum or internship course. Data were collected by an online survey consisting of a demographic form and three instruments (i.e., Counselor Supervisor Self-Efficacy Scale, Supervisory Working Alliance Inventory, and Counselor Evaluation Rating Scale). Supervisors were encouraged to complete instruments on more than one supervisee; a total of 57 sets of instruments were completed and used for the analysis. The results of the simple linear regression for each of the research questions found no statistical significance of time-spent in technology-assisted supervision predicting counselor supervisor self-efficacy, the supervisory working alliance, or supervisee performance in supervision. The implications of these findings, limitations of this study, and recommendations for future research and practice are described.

Many of these managers have not studied business and lack leadership and management experience. Bringing Micro to the Macro: Adapting Clinical Interventions for Supervision and Management shows social workers and other human service professionals how to adapt their clinical and direct practice skills to be effective supervisors and managers. The book demonstrates the parallels between the micro process of client work and the macro process of staff supervision and management. It also shows managers how to properly adapt and employ their micro practice skills to engage, motivate, and guide their staff to achieve maximum impact and productivity. The first four parts are based on the four phases of service delivery in social work: Engagement, Assessment, Intervention, and Evaluation and Termination. The book concludes with a part on Self-Care, as this is important if you want to have longevity in this field. Bringing Micro to the Macro is a user-friendly book that can be a tool that new supervisors or managers in social work and human services can reach for when they wonder how to work with staff instead of clients.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Counselor expectations of supervision and counselor burnout were assessed. The sample consisted of 120 members of the Oregon Personnel and Guidance Association. Subjects were contacted by mail and asked to complete a questionnaire. The questionnaire contained two instruments: the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and the Counselor Supervision Inventory (CSI). The MBI is a 22- item instrument which measured frequency and intensity of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. The CSI is a 60-item instrument developed for this study which measures ideal and actual perceptions of supervisory counseling, consultation, and teaching. Linear regressions were computed to measure the relationships between level of counselor experience and ideal perceptions of supervision. Pearson correlations were computed to measure the degree of relationship between the counselor supervision variables and the burnout variables. Multiple regressions were computed to measure the relationships between the burnout variables and selected demographic variables. It was found that counselors are dissatisfied with the quality of the supervision they are receiving. Level of counselor experience was not significantly related to supervision needs. Counselor dissatisfaction with supervision was significantly and positively related to frequency and intensity of emotional exhaustion, intensity of depersonalization, and negatively related to frequency of personal accomplishment. Level of academic degree was positively related to frequency of depersonalization, and hours per week of supervision received was positively related to intensity of depersonalization. It was concluded that supervision is effective in preventing counselor burnout to the extent that it is perceived by counselors as being characterized by expertise and support.
