Book excerpt: Current and future prison designs are examined in this book, within the government's prison building programme, and the confines of current penal philosophies and legislation. America has led the way in prison design, with two main types of architecture predominating: radial layouts (outside cells with windows) and linear blocks (inside cells with grilles). Now, 'new' generation prisons (central association surrounded by small groups of cells) look set to become the fashion. But are they a better answer, and should they be copied worldwide before we know? Architects and administrators show in this book the designs of these 'new generation' prisons and assess their impact. Most countries in central Europe also have a rising crime rate and a demand for new prisons. Contributions from significant architects from the UK, Europe and America comment on these issues. Other topics within the book are: setting current prison architecture and design against an historical setting; looking at penal ideas and prison architecture and design in the post-war period; the psychological effects of the prison environment; the influence of technology and design on security management; and how prison architecture and design can be more flexible and innovative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of over 900 trainees at the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych) in the United Kingdom showed that over three-quarters of psychiatry trainees desired some knowledge and training in the field of neuropsychiatry. Recent years have given rise to a substantial global focus on integrating neurosciences and neuropsychiatry in psychiatric training. Neuropsychiatry forms an important part of the psychiatric curriculum and is examined in theory and in clinical exams. Similarly, neuropsychiatry is also of interest to neurology trainees, and it is increasingly recognised that all neurology trainees should have some knowledge and experience in neuropsychiatry. Despite this growing interest, there is a dearth of neuropsychiatry textbooks specifically geared towards trainees and other clinicians who are not specialist in the field. Part of the Oxford Textbooks in Psychiatry series, the Oxford Textbook of Neuropsychiatry helps to bridge the gap between general psychiatric textbooks and reference texts in neuropsychiatry. Organised into four sections, the book covers the basic knowledge and skills relevant to neuropsychiatry, the various neuropsychiatric conditions, the principles of treatment, and perspectives for neuropsychiatry worldwide. Chapters have been written by international experts who are leaders in their own fields with the view to taking an evidence-based, up-to-date, global perspective on neuropsychiatric problems and treatment. The book is relevant to trainees in psychiatry, neurology, neurorehabilitation and also to various allied professionals in neuroscience and mental health. It covers core knowledge and skills for practice in all psychiatric disciplines including core knowledge for training in neuropsychiatry. The book meets curriculum requirements for various international training programmes and examinations, and serves as an essential training text book for all psychiatric and neurology trainees worldwide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The science of administration attempts to discover and impart, principles of administration. Principles can mean either of two things, ie, ethical nature and generalization of behaviour. The first is of an ethical nature, the administration may say we ought to do this list of things in this way. Here the ethical impulse is paramount. Thus, we ought to admit every child that is sick and brought to our door. Or, we ought not let a patient leave, until we absolutely certain that he is capable of returning to work tomorrow morning, at least to get as strong as he was before he was afflicted. These are standards. Ambitions, expressions of what is supremely good in the conduct of the enterprise. There is a relationship between ethical principles and the principles as generalisation of cause and effect. The principle, as ethics may set the purpose; the generalisation may assist in identifying the means whereby the purpose may be achieved. According to Finer, following are the principles of administration. From the apprehension of purpose, from its absorption, flows directly the oneness of leadership that gives form to the whole aggregate of people whose skills are needed for its fulfillment. Leadership e may take the form of a single executive or a duo or a triumvirate and There are numerous forms of collective administrative bodies. One may be final leader to ultimate decisions. Oneness implies that all the personnel are members. The first requirement is the right of people to have positions of authority, or in other words, the of the authority of the situation. This returns to the problem that is to say, the selection and promotion leading to high places. However, there are persons involved in all the techniques of persuasion and command; orientation periods, manuals of policy, periodical conferences, social festivities; the administrator rounds in the manner appropriate to the personality of the particular collection and human beings on the staff and individual counselling. It would be idle to protract that list of the techniques of association of the art, as it were, of making love to other people.

Book excerpt: The importance of administration in the EU has been growing progressively together with the development of EU competences and tasks in the internal market. From the original model of a Community leaving enforcement with the Member States, the EU has become a complex legal order where administrative tasks are spread among different actors, including EU institutions, EU agencies and national administrations. Within this complex administrative law landscape, agencies and their powers have been essentially 'upgraded'. This volume asks whether any such 'upgrade' is compatible with EU law and its principles. Exploring both the case law of the CJEU and the regulation relating to EU agencies, the volume asks a crucial question about the legitimacy of the ever-increasing role of agencies in the enforcement of EU law.
