Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of supersonic diffuser performance in a flow regime in which viscous and compressibility influences are equally important was conducted. The investigation involved Mach numbers from 6 to 16.5. It is shown that, although diffuser recovery compared to higher density regimes is small, using the proper diffuser allowed the required wind tunnel exhaust pressure to be up to 35 times the pressure existing in the test chamber. While this may not seem exceptional at first glance, it is important to note that this was achieved in conjunction with Reynolds numbers on the order of 10 to the minus 3 power below those typical of tunnels yielding higher recoveries. Book excerpt: Presented herein are wind tunnel data from an investigation whose primary objective was to develop design criteria and performance tradeoffs for supersonic inlets applicable to advanced tactical aircraft. The objective was accomplished by conducting analysis and wind tunnel tests using approximately . 125 scale model air induction systems. The baseline models included a two- dimensional external compression inlet, a half-axisymmetric external compression inlet, and a two-dimensional mixed compression inlet. Alternate configurations for the external compression baseline inlets were also investigated. Tests were conducted at transonic and supersonic Mach numbers in the AEDC PWT-4T and VKF-A wind tunnels, respectively. The inlets were tested both isolated and in a well defined nonuniform flow field, the latter representing partial simulation of a vehicle flow field. Steady state performance data (i.e., pressure recovery, pressure distortion, and turbulence levels) are provided at a simulated compressor face and immediately downstream of the inlet throat for the various inlet configurations tested. Additional diagnostic data are provided in the way of surface pressures and boundary layer pressures on the inlet compression surfaces and in the subsonic diffusers.

Book excerpt: With the technical challenges that simulations of Mach 5-plus speeds pose for wind tunnel ground testing facilities, such testing has been characterized as "the art of partial simulation." Lu (mechanical and aerospace engineering, U. of Texas at Arlington) and Marren (Arnold Engineering Development Center, White Oak, MD) introduce 22 contributed chapters expanding the knowledge base on developments in hypersonic facilities in the past decade by focusing on testing principles; specific types of facilities (e.g., NASA's HYPULSE, LENS hypervelocity tunnels, and the U-12 large shock tube); and innovations including new instrumentation capabilities, advances in material sciences, and increasing international cooperation. Readers are referred elsewhere for treatment of perfect gas wind tunnels. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book excerpt: Transition Reynolds number measurements on a hollow cylinder in the von Karman Gas Dynamics Facility's 12-inch and 40-inch supersonic tunnels show that the highest transition Reynolds numbers were obtained in the 40-inch tunnel, although the variations with unit Reynolds number were the same at Mach numbers 3 to 5. The influence of nose bluntness in the 40-inch tunnel corresponds closely with the results obtained in the 12-inch tunnel.

Book excerpt: A fixed-geometry diffuser system was tested in an arc-heated, hypersonic, open-jet wind tunnel facility at Mach numbers between 14 and 18 and Reynolds numbers (based on nozzle exit diameter) between 8,900 and 25,000. Tests were conducted both with an empty test section and with conical models in the flow. Test variables included test section open-jet length, diffuser second-throat length, and diffuser inlet geometry. Diffuser efficiency improved with increased diffuser second-throat length, with increasing Reynolds number, and with the addition of conical models into the flow. Changes in open-jet length and diffuser inlet geometry had no appreciable effect on diffuser efficiency with an empty test section. A streamlined model support strut produced marked improvement in diffuser efficiency over a blunt support strut.

Book excerpt: The present study was performed to determine how significant the interference effects of the wind-tunnel model support system and tunnel walls can be for a high-speed configuration during takeoff and landing conditions. A 5-percent scale model of the Technology Concept Airplane was recently tested in the Langley 14- by 22-Foot Subsonic Tunnel. The model was numerically modeled with and without the support and tunnel walls and compared with experimental data. Detailed analysis of the flow provided additional insight concerning what effects the postsupport and tunnel walls had on the flow field. This study revealed that although the overall forces and moments could be experimentally accounted for, the detailed flow features, such as the surface pressure distributions, could not be accurately simulated without including the post in the computations.

Book excerpt: Diffuser performance with high blockages is analyzed by a two-dimensional turbulent-flow model. This model is used to analyze the performance of simple two-dimensional, plane-walled diffusers and also of three-dimensional diffusers up to and beyond the blockage limits for which previous analytical or experimental data are available. The effects of important design parameters on diffuser performance are investigated. The parameters considered are the blockage, divergence angle, Mach number, aspect ratio, and wall-to-free stream temperature ratio. The first two parameters affect the diffuser performance significantly; the other parameters influence performance only slightly. Results obtained from the subject model agree reasonably well with the available experimental data. The diffuser design of the U-25 facility is analyzed and the analysis predicts a pressure recovery of 0.49, which agrees very well with the measured experimental value of approximately 0.48, obtained from a small-scale model.
