Book excerpt: Theoretical approximations to the nondimensional lift and pitching moment produced by constant vertical acceleration, the CL(alpha) and CM(alpha) derivatives, respectively, are derived for a series of thin sweptback tapered wings with streamwise tips. The analysis is essentially the application of a recently published solution of the linearized time-dependent wave equation for wings in accelerated motion. The results are independent of camber and thickness and are applicable for a range of supersonic speed for which the wing is wholly contained between the Mach cones springing from the wing apex and from the trailing edge of the root section (subsonic leading edge and supersonic trailing edge). Design curves are presented which permit rapid estimation of the derivatives CL(alpha) and CM(alpha) for given values of aspect ratio, taper ratio, Mach number, and leading-edge sweep.

Book excerpt: On the basis of a solution to the linearized time-dependent wave equation, the nondimensional lift derivative and corresponding pitching-moment derivative resulting from constant vertical acceleration (that is, linear variation of angle of attack with time) are evaluated for a family of thin sweptback tapered wings with streamwise tips traveling at supersonic speeds.

Book excerpt: This report discusses the pros and cons of numerical, semiempirical and empirical aeroprediction codes and lists many state-of-the-art codes in use today. It then summarizes many of the more popular approximate analytical methods used in State-of-the-Art (SOTA) semiempirical aeroprediction codes. It also summarizes some recent new nonlinear semiempirical methods that allow more accurate calculation of static aerodynamics on complete missile configurations to higher angles of attack. Results of static aerodynamic calculations on complete missile configurations compared to wind tunnel data are shown for several configurations at various flight conditions. Calculations show the new nonlinear methods being far superior to some of the former linear technology when used at angles of attack greater than about 15 degrees. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stability and Control of Airplanes and Helicopters deals with aircraft flying qualities that determine the stability and control of airplanes and helicopters. It includes problems based on real aircraft, selected to represent the gamut from simple to complicated, and from conventional utility designs to futuristic research types. Many of these problems involve comparison of theory and experiment to demonstrate their mutual relationship. Comprised of 25 chapters, this book begins with a discussion on the aerodynamics of the component parts related to the lift and moment characteristics of an airplane, including wings and associated accessories; bodies such as fuselages, nacelles, and tip tanks; and control surfaces. The reader is then introduced to some mathematical techniques for linear differential equations; steady flight at different speeds; and stick force and control-free stability. Subsequent chapters focus on flaps and high-lift devices; power and compressibility effects; and the manner in which the aircraft responds to the application of control. Aeroelasticity and longitudinal equations of motion are also examined. This monograph is intended for undergraduate and graduate students taking modern engineering courses.
