A Demoness Matched: Liberated from a dangerous cult, Julia Tate needs protection from her incubus father. Luckily, she finds it at the home of reclusive former baseball star Calvin Wolf, who is hiding a hairy secret. That Ol' Team Spirit: Someone's haunting the Sharks' stadium and creating some major league mischief. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the reception of antiquity in the performing and visual arts from the Renaissance to the twenty-first century. It explores the tensions and relations of gender, sexuality, eroticism and power in reception. Such universal themes dictated plots and characters of myth and drama, but also served to portray historical figures, events and places from Classical history. Their changing reception and reinterpretation across time has created stereotypes, models of virtue or immoral conduct, that blend the original features from the ancient world with a diverse range of visual and performing arts of the modern era.The volume deconstructs these traditions and shows how arts of different periods interlink to form and transmit these images to modern audiences and viewers. Drawing on contributions from across Europe and the United States, a trademark of the book is the inclusive treatment of all the arts beyond the traditional limits of academic disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ground Pork is the first collection of poetry to be released by Thomas Porky McDonald. Containing the first five poem books written by McDonald, whose work is often defined by his depictions of the world of baseball, Ground Pork gives an insight into the poet's earliest verses. Conceived from 1989 through early 1994, the innocence of his first two works, Second...to Verse...Baseball Poems, and some other stuff and Eternal Postcards, does leave the reader with an anticipation of the more centered and powerful verses to come. Signature pieces "The Park That Isn't There " and "Queensbridge", (from Second to Verse) and "Once" and "Skipper's Song", (from Eternal Postcards) display a depth that only grows in books three through five. Some Came Lost, which was written just before a time of great turmoil for McDonald, reflects back to the 20s of a man crossing into his 30s, and emotionally bridges the initial offerings with books four and five. "Just a Walk on Flatbush Avenue" and "Someday Demolition Men" in particular, release a part of the soul of this self-styled "Ramble Poet". Fugitive in your Face (poetry in Exile) and Out Here in...Crazyland the fourth and fifth books in this collection, were driven out from March through September of 1994, while the writer faced suspension and expulsion from work. This time also included an arrest, with charges later dropped, stemming from a classic case of bureaucracy gone amok, and a positive drug screening following re-instatement into the workplace. Hence, the pieces "Lonesome Majesty" and "After Crash Landing" in Fugitive In Your Face, and "Crazyland" and "Loons" in Out Here in... Crazyland. In addition, the uncertainty of the time produced moments of memorable verse, such as "Tall Girls Blessed With Greasepaint" (Fugitive), "Rest Alive" and "Where the Angels Bow to the Grass" (Crazyland). Ground Pork leaves off in late 1994, from which the most prolific time of the poet's life would soon commence. As such, it is a lasting insight into the very soul of a man whose goal appears to be bringing back the art of baseball poetry.

Empowered to live a life of no regrets, she casts aside all that is familiar to face her fears and chase her dreams. But as she heads for the wilds of Alaska, romance is definitely not on her agenda, because she's convinced she's incapable of falling in love. Pasha Dunn has learned to expect the unexpected in her job with an adventure outfitter in the remote Alaskan interior. Adaptability is essential in such a savage and unforgiving landscape. But she's woefully unprepared when her infallible intuition tells her that client Emery Lawson is the soul mate she's been waiting for all her life. Emery is clearly determined to remain unattached, and her high-risk vagabond lifestyle is too far outside Pasha's comfort zone. All that they think they want and know will be challenged when they are thrust into a nightmare of survival and endurance high above the Arctic Circle.

Book excerpt: 2016 Choice Outstanding Academic Title Finalist for 2016 Richard Wall Memorial Award by the Theatre Library Long listed for the 2017 Kraszna-Krausz Best Photography Book Award from the Kraszna-Krausz Foundation Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, and Katharine Hepburn all made lasting impressions with the cinematic cross-dressing they performed onscreen. What few modern viewers realize, however, is that these seemingly daring performances of the 1930s actually came at the tail end of a long wave of gender-bending films that included more than 400 movies featuring women dressed as men. Laura Horak spent a decade scouring film archives worldwide, looking at American films made between 1908 and 1934, and what she discovered could revolutionize our understanding of gender roles in the early twentieth century. Questioning the assumption that cross-dressing women were automatically viewed as transgressive, she finds that these figures were popularly regarded as wholesome and regularly appeared onscreen in the 1910s, thus lending greater respectability to the fledgling film industry. Horak also explores how and why this perception of cross-dressed women began to change in the 1920s and early 1930s, examining how cinema played a pivotal part in the representation of lesbian identity. Girls Will Be Boys excavates a rich history of gender-bending film roles, enabling readers to appreciate the wide array of masculinities that these actresses performed—from sentimental boyhood to rugged virility to gentlemanly refinement. Taking us on a guided tour through a treasure-trove of vintage images, Girls Will Be Boys helps us view the histories of gender, sexuality, and film through fresh eyes.
