Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At least 10 years have elapsed since a comprehensive monograph concer ned with the broad subject of cryogenics has been published. During this time a considerable quantity of research and development has been carried out in the field of cryogenics. Furthermore, there has been a certain degree of redirection of effort within the field, mostly driven by the variety of new applications, ranging from superconductive magnet systems to micro electronics. Greater emphasis is now being placed on low-temperature cryogenics, particularly that of liquid helium. Until now cryogenic books have provided a broad survey of materials and fluid properties over the entire cryogenic regime, T ::5 150 K. This approach does not allow sufficient detail in any particular area to bring the reader to the current level of understanding in the subject. In addition, the behavior of helium has been lumped with that of other cryogenic fluids, although the properties of helium are quite unique. As a result, a clear relationship has not been established between the fundamental understanding of helium fluids and their potential applications. The present book has been written to fill this void. The approach is to survey the field of cryogenics, specifically as it pertains to helium fluids. This approach is more specialized than that contained in previous cryogenics books. Furthermore, the level of treatment is more advanced and a certain knowledge of fundamental engineering and physics principles has been assumed.

Book excerpt: Three classical problems associated with the ordinary diffusion equation concern the temperature in: (1) a half-space with clamped heat flux at the free face, (2) a half-space with clamped temperature at the free face, and (3) an infinite medium with a pulsed plane heat source. These problems are also important for the nonlinear diffusion equation based on the Gorter-Mellink relation, which describes heat transport in superfluid helium. A similarity solution to problem (1), the clamped-flux problem, has already been found and compared, with good agreement, with experimental data of van Sciver. (A similarity solution is one in which the profiles of temperature rise .delta. T versus distance Z at different times t can be obtained from one another by suitable (different) stretching of the temperature and distance axes.) In this paper, similarity solutions are given in analytic form to problems (2) and (3), the clamped-temperature and pulsed-source problems.

Book excerpt: Helium 4 is a collection of materials that examines the various properties of helium 4. The book presents 12 experimental studies and seven theoretical studies. The coverage of the text includes the viscosity of liquid helium below the ?-point; the transfer of helium II on glass; and the determination of the velocity of propagation of the second sound in helium II. The theoretical papers tackle topics such as the theory of superfluidity of helium II; radiation of sound in helium II; and the kinetic coefficients of helium II. The book will be of great interest to chemists, chemical engineers, and other scientists from related fields.

Book excerpt: Pure and Applied Cryogenics, Volume 6: Liquid Helium Technology focuses on the principles, techniques, methodologies, and approaches involved in liquid helium technology. The selection examines liquid helium technology at the National Bureau of Standards, properties of liquid helium, heat transfer to liquid helium, and noise associated with heat transfer to liquid helium II. Discussions focus on apparatus and instrumentation, test procedure, liquid helium as a cryogenic liquid, zero viscosity, momentum of heat flow, rotation and vortex lines, oscillation of vortex lines, and quantized vortices. The publication then takes a look at boiling heat transfer to liquid helium, heat transfer from metal to supercritical helium, heat transfer to boiling liquid helium in narrow vertical channels, and critical nucleate boiling of liquid helium in a simulated wire wound magnet. The text ponders on microdegree temperature controller for liquid helium II bath, commercial production, storage and distribution of liquid helium, lightweight liquid helium dewar, commercial handling of liquid helium dewars, effectiveness of low temperature refrigeration for electronics, and a bulk liquid helium distribution system. The selection is a valuable source of information for scientists and researchers interested in liquid helium technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1989 Cryogenic Engineering Conference, meeting jointly with the International Cryogenic Materials Conference, was held on the campus of the University of California, Los Angeles from July 24 to 28. Professor T.H.K. Frederking was the conference chairman. The Conference had previously met at U.C.L.A. in 1962 and 1969. A special symposium, "A Half Century of Superfluid Helium," was a significant part of the program of CEC-89. We were especially fortunate to have Professor Jack Allen of the University of St. Andrews, Scotland present at the Conference; his paper, "Early Superfluidity in Cambridge, 1936 to 1939," was a delightful, often humorous account of the early experimental work with superfluid helium. Professors V.L. Ginzburg and J.L. Olesen could not be present for the Symposium, but provided papers which are published in these proceedings. The late Bill Fairbank, responding graciously to a last-minute invitation from Professor Frederking, presented a wonderful account of superfluid research in the United States in the post-war years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heat Transfer and Flow of Helium in Channels: Practical Limits for Applications in Superconductivity The development of large superconducting devices is intimately related to the fluid mechanics and heat transfer characteristics of cryogenic helium. In the earliest successfully developed magnets for bubble chambers and accelerator beam transport and focussing, the main function of the helium was to cool the conductor matrix down, to stabilize it against flux jumps, and to provide a heat sink for the relatively low losses which occur in charging. The success of this phase of development of superconducting technol ogy is attested to by the existence of several such devices with 1000 hours or more of routine operation behind them The wide range of applications under consideration for the future, however, demands much more of the helium as a heat transfer medium, and will exercise the ingenuity of designers to the full. The simple expedient of immersing a device in a bath of liquid helium at a temperature close to 4 K will not suffice or may simply be impractical. Our research philosophy at the National Bureau of Standards has been to explore as far as possible all modes of application of helium as a heat transfer medium in order to preserve as many options as possible for the designer. As a consequence we are interested in all phases of helium and we are particularly interested in exploring the possible boundaries of operation imposed by the thermodynamic and transport properties of helium. In this paper, after a brief discussion of the relevant properties of helium, we consider some important characteristics of helium flowing in channels, since we anticipate that this mode of cooling in some form or other will be preferred over natural convection in future large devices. First we discuss heat transport to helium I above the critical pressure, then heat transport to helium I below the critical pressure. We then discuss some possibilities for cooling to lower temperatures by means of helium II. In the final section we consider the problem of flow stability and oscillations in channels cooled by forced flow of helium. Book excerpt: A bibliography of 156 references in heat transfer from solid surfaces to fluids and related phenomena is presented. Heat transfer data obtained from experimental work on cryogenic fluids are presented in graphical form. The theoretical and empirical formulations appearing in the references are presented. In those cases where sufficient information is available to make numerical computations, the formulations are presented graphically to permit comparison with the results of the experimental work.
