Book Synopsis The Future of Supercomputing by : National Research Council
Download or read book The Future of Supercomputing written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-10-08 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee on the Future of Supercomputing was tasked to assess prospects for supercomputing technology research and development in support of U.S. needs, to examine key elements of context-the history of supercomputing, the erosion of research investment, the changing nature of problems demanding supercomputing, and the needs of government agencies for supercomputing capabilities-and to assess options for progress. This interim report establishes context-including the history and current state of supercomputing, application requirements, technology evolution, the socioeconomic context-to identify some of the issues that may be explored in more depth in the second phase of the study.

Supercomputers explores commercial supercomputer applications today as well as those emerging from university laboratories. It outlines trends in the supercomputing technology into the near future, and also contributes to a growing debate on the roles of the public and private sectors in nurturing this vital technology.
Book Synopsis Getting Up to Speed by : National Research Council
Download or read book Getting Up to Speed written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-02-03 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supercomputers play a significant and growing role in a variety of areas important to the nation. They are used to address challenging science and technology problems. In recent years, however, progress in supercomputing in the United States has slowed. The development of the Earth Simulator supercomputer by Japan that the United States could lose its competitive advantage and, more importantly, the national competence needed to achieve national goals. In the wake of this development, the Department of Energy asked the NRC to assess the state of U.S. supercomputing capabilities and relevant R&D. Subsequently, the Senate directed DOE in S. Rpt. 107-220 to ask the NRC to evaluate the Advanced Simulation and Computing program of the National Nuclear Security Administration at DOE in light of the development of the Earth Simulator. This report provides an assessment of the current status of supercomputing in the United States including a review of current demand and technology, infrastructure and institutions, and international activities. The report also presents a number of recommendations to enable the United States to meet current and future needs for capability supercomputers.

Book Synopsis Supercomputing by : Janusz S. Kowalik
Download or read book Supercomputing written by Janusz S. Kowalik and published by Springer. This book was released on 1989 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supercomputing is an important science and technology that enables the scientist or the engineer to simulate numerically very complex physical phenomena related to large-scale scientific, industrial and military applications. It has made considerable progress since the first NATO Workshop on High-Speed Computation in 1983 (Vol. 7 of the same series). This book is a collection of papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop held in Trondheim, Norway, in June 1989. It presents key research issues related to: - hardware systems, architecture and performance; - compilers and programming tools; - user environments and visualization; - algorithms and applications. Contributions include critical evaluations of the state-of-the-art and many original research results.
Download or read book Unmatched written by David Barkai and published by . This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The rapid and extraordinary progress of supercomputing over the past half-century is a powerful demonstration of our relentless drive to understand and shape the world around us. In this book, David Barkai offers a unique and compelling account of this remarkable technological journey, drawing from his own rich experiences working at the forefront of high-performance computing. This book is a journey delineated as five decade-long 'epochs' defined by the systems' architectural themes: Vector processors, Multi-Processors, Microprocessors, Clusters, and Accelerators & Cloud Computing. The final part examines key issues of HPC and discusses where it might be headed. A central goal of this book is to show how computing power has been applied, and, more importantly, how it has impacted and benefited society. To this end, the use of high-performance computing (HPC) is illustrated in a range of industries and applications, from weather & climate modelling to engineering and life sciences. As such, this book appeals to both students and general readers with an interest in HPC, as well as industry professionals looking to revolutionise their practice"--
