Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supercomputers play a significant and growing role in a variety of areas important to the nation. They are used to address challenging science and technology problems. In recent years, however, progress in supercomputing in the United States has slowed. The development of the Earth Simulator supercomputer by Japan that the United States could lose its competitive advantage and, more importantly, the national competence needed to achieve national goals. In the wake of this development, the Department of Energy asked the NRC to assess the state of U.S. supercomputing capabilities and relevant R&D. Subsequently, the Senate directed DOE in S. Rpt. 107-220 to ask the NRC to evaluate the Advanced Simulation and Computing program of the National Nuclear Security Administration at DOE in light of the development of the Earth Simulator. This report provides an assessment of the current status of supercomputing in the United States including a review of current demand and technology, infrastructure and institutions, and international activities. The report also presents a number of recommendations to enable the United States to meet current and future needs for capability supercomputers.

Download or read book The Future of Supercomputing written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-09-08 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee on the Future of Supercomputing was tasked to assess prospects for supercomputing technology research and development in support of U.S. needs, to examine key elements of context-the history of supercomputing, the erosion of research investment, the changing nature of problems demanding supercomputing, and the needs of government agencies for supercomputing capabilities-and to assess options for progress. This interim report establishes context-including the history and current state of supercomputing, application requirements, technology evolution, the socioeconomic context-to identify some of the issues that may be explored in more depth in the second phase of the study.

Download or read book Supercomputers written by National Academy of Sciences and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1989-02-01 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supercomputers are the ultimate engine of the information age. By generating and processing vast amounts of data with hitherto unparalleled speed, they make new activities in industrial research and product development possible. Supercomputers explores commercial supercomputer applications today as well as those emerging from university laboratories. It outlines trends in the supercomputing technology into the near future, and also contributes to a growing debate on the roles of the public and private sectors in nurturing this vital technology.
Book Synopsis Parallel Algorithms for Matrix Computations by : K. Gallivan
Download or read book Parallel Algorithms for Matrix Computations written by K. Gallivan and published by SIAM. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes a selection of important parallel algorithms for matrix computations. Reviews the current status and provides an overall perspective of parallel algorithms for solving problems arising in the major areas of numerical linear algebra, including (1) direct solution of dense, structured, or sparse linear systems, (2) dense or structured least squares computations, (3) dense or structured eigenvaluen and singular value computations, and (4) rapid elliptic solvers. The book emphasizes computational primitives whose efficient execution on parallel and vector computers is essential to obtain high performance algorithms. Consists of two comprehensive survey papers on important parallel algorithms for solving problems arising in the major areas of numerical linear algebra--direct solution of linear systems, least squares computations, eigenvalue and singular value computations, and rapid elliptic solvers, plus an extensive up-to-date bibliography (2,000 items) on related research.
Book Synopsis Computational Physics - Proceedings Of The 9th Physics Summer School At The Australian National Univ by : Henry J Gardner
Download or read book Computational Physics - Proceedings Of The 9th Physics Summer School At The Australian National Univ written by Henry J Gardner and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-03-18 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational Physics is a vigorous subject due to its interdisciplinary nature. In this spirit, the volume brings together lecture notes from leading computational physicists in quite disparate areas of research interest. The resulting collection of essays should be a valuable resource in an area where there are few standard textbooks at the present time. The volume is made up of lecture notes and introductory articles representative of the Summer School on Computational Physics which was held at the Australian National University in 1996. Several of the authors are world-renowned for their contributions to this new — and rapidly evolving — area, and this volume will be a useful supplement to textbooks at the graduate, advanced undergraduate, and professional levels.
Book Synopsis Universe and Future of Humanity by : Alexander Bolonkin
Download or read book Universe and Future of Humanity written by Alexander Bolonkin and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-04-27 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book is described the arrangement of the Universe. This is the scientific prediction of the non-biological (electronic) civilization and immortality of human being. Such a prognosis is predicated upon a new law, discovered by the author, for the development of complex systems. According to this law, every self-copying system tends to be more complex than the previous system, provided that all external conditions remain the same. The consequences are disastrous: humanity will be replaced by a new civilization created by intellectual robots (which the author refers to as "E-humans" and "E-beings"), These creatures, whose intellectual and mechanical abilities will far exceed those of man, will require neither food nor oxygen to sustain their existence. They may have the emotion. Capable of developing science, technology and their own intellectual abilities thousands of times faster than humans can, they will, in essence, be eternal.

Book Synopsis Supercomputers in Theoretical and Experimental Science by : Jozef T. Devreese
Download or read book Supercomputers in Theoretical and Experimental Science written by Jozef T. Devreese and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Workshop on "The Use of Super computers in Theoretical Science" took place from July 30 till August 1, 1984, at the Conference Center of the "Priorij Corsendonk", close to the city of Antwerpen, Belgium. During the past decade computational science has developed itself to a third methodology besides the experimental and theoretical sciences. This remarkable evolution was only possible due to a drastic increase of the computational power of present day computers. Indeed, computational physics and chemistry as such is certainly not new, but it was only during the past ten years or so that realistic problems could be solved numerically to a sufficient degree of accuracy. During this workshop the state-of-the-art in high speed computation was presented by a team of lecturers who are well known for their competence in this field. It is a pleasure to thank several organizations and companies who made this workshop possible. First of all, the main sponsors: the Belgian National Science Found ation (NFWO-FNRS) and the "Universitaire Instelling Ant werpen". Next, the co-sponsors: Agfa-Gevaert N. V., Control Data Belgium and the Belgian Ministry of Education. Special thanks are due to Dr. P.E. Van Camp and Drs. H. Nachtegaele for the practical organization of this workshop. I would also like to thank Mrs. H. Evans for typing the manuscripts and for preparing the author and subject index. v Last but not least I express my gratitude to Mr.
