Book excerpt: Theresa did not consider herself an adventurer before her trip; yet somehow this smaller-than-average but larger-than-life woman, at the age of 34, found herself in the middle of rural Spain, having the adventure of a lifetime. Sunrise in Spain shares Theresa's epistolary account of the most exciting moments of her journey across the 500-mile Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, France, over the Pyrenees Mountains, and across Spain to the famous cathedral in Santiago de Compostela. Entering the trail with a practical perspective of her hiking journey, Theresa was skeptical of the transformative nature of the pilgrimage, which is often described in three phases: the breakdown and rebuilding of the pilgrim's body, mind, and soul, in that order. To her surprise, each phase had a significant impact. She immersed herself in the intangible and overwhelming gifts of the Camino, persevering through the numerous physical and mental challenges she encountered. And ultimately, what Theresa found on the Camino was nothing less than a miracle. The genuine kindness and generosity among strangers, lifelong friendships held together by powerful bonds, self-discovery, and countless inspirational moments fulfilled her heart and soul in a way she'd never imagined. Completing the Camino de Santiago was the thrill of Theresa's lifetime, and awakened in her a thirst for continued exploration, adventure, and discovery. She offers Sunrise in Spain as an inspiration to others to open their eyes to the world around them, take notice of the people they interact with each day, push their limits to discover their true capabilities, and undertake something amazing for themselves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Spanish Civil War, foreign military officers wrote highly elaborate reports of their experiences at the front. One was attaché Col. Stephen O. Fuqua of the U.S. Army, who had once held the rank of major general. His presence was highly unusual, for most military observers were less-experienced captains, majors, and lieutenant colonels. Fuqua’s reports contained important observations about Spanish armament and troop movements, and he managed to acquire Nationalist propaganda and information despite being situated entirely within Republican military lines. His reporting was considered so valuable that during World War II, Fuqua was tapped to be Time’s military commentator. Editor James W. Cortada brings Fuqua’s--and others’--insightful observations to light. The result is a volume of such immediacy that the reader feels transported to a time of great historical uncertainty amid the twentieth century’s great "dress rehearsal” for fascism and the conflagration of World War II.

Book excerpt: Though the participation of France in the American Revolution is well established in the historiography, the role of Spain, France’s ally, is relatively understudied and underappreciated. Spain's involvement in the conflict formed part of a global struggle between empires and directly influenced the outcome of the clash between Britain and its North American colonists. Following the establishment of American independence, the Spanish empire became one of the nascent republic's most significant neighbors and, often illicitly, trading partners. Bringing together essays from a range of well-regarded historians, this volume contributes significantly to the international history of the Age of Atlantic Revolutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By showing how music intersected with wider cultural affairs, such as philosophy and criticism, this book connects music and the modern in eighteenth-century Spain within the context of Enlightenment thought. Histories of modern Europe often present late eighteenth-century Spain as a backward place, haunted by the Inquisition and struggling to keep pace with modernity. While Spain under Charles III (1759-1788) pushed for economic and cultural modernization, many elites and the public at large resisted Enlightenment ideas. For conservatives, the modern would in time show its fragility, and Spain would withstand the collapse thanks to its firm grounding in the pillars of monarchy, religion, and traditional forms of knowledge. One source of this solid foundation was long-established musical knowledge based on the rules of counterpoint. In contrast, modernizers argued that Spain could be true to its essence, yet modern and cosmopolitan at the same time: they favoured cosmopolitan genres, such as Italian opera and artistic expression rather than counterpoint rules. At other times, ambivalence toward modernity produced creative uses of music, such as reinterpretations of pastoral and sentimental topics to accommodate reformist political trends. To both sides, music was crucial to the integrity of the Spanish nation. Whether and how Spain became modern would in many ways be defined and reinforced by the kinds of music that Spaniards composed and witnessed on stage. Through the study of press debates, opera and musical theatre productions, this book shows how music intersected with wider cultural affairs, such as philosophy and criticism, medicine and the human body, civilization, Bourbon policy and sentimentality. Music and Modernity in Enlightenment Spain for the first time connects music and the modern in eighteenth-century Spain within the context of Enlightenment thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is 1493. The Catholic Monarchs have vanquished the Muslim kingdom of al-Andalus and banished the Jews from Spain. Our hero, Don Pedro Togeiro, has joined Spain's greatest military commander, Don Gonzalo Fernandez of Cordoba, the Gran Capitan himself, to expel the marauding French forces from Italy, while his sultry raven-haired Moorish wife, Raquel, has accompanied Princess Juana to Flanders for her wedding to the womanising Archduke Philip of Austria where he savagely assaults her. Meanwhile, the dynastic Borgias are scandalising Rome and in the Indies Christopher Columbus continues his search for gold, convinced that he's reached China. Spain is on the threshold of greatness as Isabel and Fernando forge its destiny, but fate intervenes. Famine, earthquake and disease decimate Spain, while the tragic death of three heirs to the throne and the growing madness of heiress Juana draw Spain inexorably into the Habsburg Empire. Spain's Pursuit of Destiny: The Columbus Years, Howard Headworth's brilliant follow-up to The Al-Andalus Chronicle, has a rich blend of personal drama, historical detail and a superb sense of place. Raquel's ordeal, Pedro's kidnap in Tuscany and the epic battle of Cerignola are laid like bright tapestries before our present-day eyes. When Pedro's family, following the destruction of their castle-home, decide to seek new pastures in the West Indies, the picture is complete, and we have Spain's chequered destiny in a nutshell.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AntiFascism and Memory in East Germany is a book about remembering and about forgetting, about war, and about the peace which eventually followed. In the unlikely setting of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), the Spanish Civil War became the subject of a debate which both predated and outlasted the Cold War, involving historians, veterans, politicains, censors, artists, writers, and Church activists. Examining these multiple memories and interpretations of Spain castsnew and unexpected light on the legacy of the Spanish Civil War, and the relationship between history and memory under state socialism. The ruling Socialist Unity Party made full use of the antifascist legacy as legitimation for a non-democratic state. But despite dogged attempts at control and censorship, the state was unable to silence competing voices. All over East Germany, International Brigade veterans preserved their version of events - in letters to each other, in communications with the party, in discussions with friends and family around the kitchen table, and in memoirs written for the 'desk drawer'. For younger EastGermans, the war retained an undeniably romantic aura. From their perspective, Spain was a far-away land to which they were forbidden to travel, the stuff of camp-fire singalongs and fantasies of adventure. This book dissects the relationship between state-sponsored history, the lobbying of veterans, cultural interpretations of war, and the memory traces left behind by marginalised or politically oppositional groups and individuals. It is a cultural history of memory under state socialism, a social history of veteran groups and their relationship with the state, and a political history of communist culture. Above all, it is the story of how post-war Europeans came to terms with the heavy burden oftheir pre-war past.
