Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-three essays by young professional philosophers examine crucial ethical and metaphysical aspects of the Buffyverse (the world of Buffy). Though the show already attracted much scholarly attention, this is the first book to fully disinter the intellectual issues. Designed by Whedon as a multilevel story with most of its meanings deeply buried in heaps of heavy irony, Buffy the Vampire Slayer has replaced The X-Files as the show that explains to Americans the nature of the powerful forces of evil continually threatening to surge into our world of everyday decency and overwhelm it. In the tradition of the classic horror films Buffy the Vampire Slayer addresses ethical issues that have long fascinated audiences. This book draws out the ethical and metaphysical lessons from a pop-culture phenomenon.

Book Synopsis Transmediating the Whedonverse(s) by : Juliette C. Kitchens
Download or read book Transmediating the Whedonverse(s) written by Juliette C. Kitchens and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the transmedial nature of the storyworlds created by and/or affiliated with television auteur, writer, and filmmaker, Joss Whedon. As such, the book addresses the ways in which Whedon’s storyworlds, or ‘verses, employ transmedia, both intrinsically as texts and extrinsically as these texts are consumed and, in some cases, reworked, by audiences. This collection walks readers through fan and scholar-fan engagement, intrinsic textual transmediality, and Whedon’s lasting influence on televisual and transmedia texts. In closing, the editors argue for the need to continue research into how the Whedonverse(s) lend themselves to transmedial study, engage audiences in ways that take advantage of multiple media, and encourage textual internalization of these engagements within audiences.
Book Synopsis The Girl's Got Bite by : Kathleen Tracy
Download or read book The Girl's Got Bite written by Kathleen Tracy and published by St. Martin's Griffin. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buffy Summers is just your average teenager with everyday problems except for one teeny tiny thing-she's the Vampire Slayer. Balancing homework with her duties as the one chosen to rid the Earth of evil forces sometimes puts a crimp in Buffy's social life, but she manages. That the buff high schooler can annihilate vampires and other monsters while remaining fashionably dressed and cutely dressed illustrates the dichotomy that is Buffy. In this companion guide Kathleen Tracy covers all aspects of the Buffy phenomena--from the 1992 feature film starring Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry, to the development and production of the hit TV series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar. Based on interviews with the show's creator, producers and principal cast members, the book includes cast biographies, critical summaries of each episode, trivia, behind-the-scenes anecdotes, and more. Like the series, The Girl's Got Bite combines the thoughtful (an essay on slayer mythology throughout history) with the frivolous for a frightfully good time.
Book Synopsis Public Privates by : Marcia R. England
Download or read book Public Privates written by Marcia R. England and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2018-05 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public Privates focuses on public and private acts and spaces in media to explore the formation of geographies. Situated at the intersections of cultural geography, feminist geography, and media studies, Marcia R. England’s study argues that media both reinforce and subvert traditional notions of public and private spaces through depiction of behaviors and actions within those spheres. Though popular media contribute to the erosion of indistinct edges between spaces, they also frequently reinforce the traditional dualism through particular codings that designate the normed and gendered socio-spatial actions appropriate in each sphere—producing geographical imaginations and behaviors. England applies her immensely readable construction to a diverse and wide-ranging array of media including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Fast and the Furious, J-Horror, sitcoms, Degrassi, and reality TV. By examining the gendered representations of public and private spaces in media and how images influence imagined and lived geographies, England shows how popular culture, specifically visual media, transmits ideologies that disintegrate the already blurred boundaries between public and private spaces.
