Book excerpt: Embarking early one Sunday morning on an innocent road trip from Greenville, South Carolina, to the hills of North Carolina, the unsuspecting husband and wife team of Tom and Linda Kupec had no idea that their one-day trek would turn into a fifty-four-week adventure of a lifetime. South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, West Virginia, Mississippi, and Alabama. Each weekend, the couple discovered a new church that was still preaching the Word of God, even if the worship service was a bit different than what they were used to. Mega churches and tiny ones. Liturgical services and charismatic ones. Cotton fields, football fields, and battlefields. The highest mountains east of the Mississippi River. The largest army base in the country. Breathtaking sunrises rivaled only by the splendor of the changing autumn leaves. Four separate trips to the Atlantic Ocean. Through it all God was showing Tom and Linda the indescribable joy of being in the center of God’s will, being led by His Spirit to places they had never been, both physically and spiritually. God showed them the vastness of His Body, the Church. They encountered people with humble hearts looking to serve their Savior. Hungry hearts aspiring to mature in their walk with God. People in churches that proclaim the risen Christ. Churches proclaiming the Lordship of Jesus despite the continuing decay of an increasingly secular society. Churches graciously embracing the couple from South Carolina with their New York accents. Sundays in the South is the story of God’s redemption and His faithfulness to a couple who has not always been faithful to Him. It’s a story of a God faithful to His church despite its warts and blemishes. Follow along with Tom as he recounts their year-long trek and perhaps be inspired to take a journey of your own.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Pope John Paul II died, Suzanne Strempek Shea, who had not been an active member of a church community for some years, recognized in his mourners a faith-filled passion that she longed to recapture in her own life. So she set out on a pilgrimage to visit a different church every Sunday for one year-a journey that would take her through the broad spectrum of contemporary Protestant Christianity practiced in this country. From a rousing Easter Baptist service in Harlem, to Colorado's Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame for a sing-along at the Cowboy Church; from a roofless Episcopal church in Hawaii, to a storefront African orthodox church where jazz legend John Coltrane is considered a bona fide saint; from the largest church in the country to a small-town church packed for a Sunday school class taught by Jimmy Carter, Shea toured more than thirty states in search of the meaning of Christian faith to the many who practice it. The result, Sundays in America, is an essential guide for those seeking a new house for their worship as well as a colorful road trip for the armchair explorer.

Weaving together the South's two greatest traditions--cooking and storytelling--Algood brings readers to the Sunday table of Southern homes. And while Sunday dinner is often the most indulgent meal of the week, Algood devotes a portion of the book to recipes for health-conscious readers. You'll be inspired to preserve and continue the grand tradition of Southern Sunday dinner with dishes such as... Spicy Sweet Potato Soup with Greens, Fresh Corn Polenta with Cherry Tomatoes, and Roasted Brisket with Country Vegetables This book is not just a cookbook but also a collection of memories where one dish stands out among the many offered on the most sacred days and the most cherished of all weekly meals. Sunday Dinner in the South honors those who feed us spiritually from the pulpit and those who do the same for our physical needs from the kitchen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sunday dinners in the south were a tradition in my home growing up. Sunday was about God and family. Sunday was my favorite day of the week. The family would gather for a meal after church and spend the afternoon together. Some meals were elaborate and some were very simple. It was not only about the food but about enjoying each other. Times were much simpler then and I recall fondly all the memories. Enjoy this journey with me as we travel along memory lane to remember Sundays in the South. The food was delicious and plenty. I lived in a rural farm community and neighbors would always drop by on Sunday afternoon. My mother was the best southern cook I have ever known. She enjoyed watching family and friends eat the food she made. I always said God put my mother on this earth to bring joy to people. Whether it was her calm and gentle demeanor or the plates of food she served, she did it with joy. You could not help but be happy around my mother. If you were having a bad day, she always knew the right thing to say and the right food to cheer you up. She brought great joy to everyone she met. Mother would do most of the cooking on Saturday so she could spend time with family and friends on Sunday. There were almost always at least 1 cake and pie or cobbler for every dinner. She also made cookies, homemade ice cream and various other desserts. I come from a large family and we might have 40 people at Sunday dinner. If you missed Sunday dinner, you better have a great reason. She expected everyone to attend Sunday dinner. When we became adults and moved out, we would drop by on Saturday's to help her prepare for Sunday dinner. Sunday dinners started out at my grandparent's house but as they got older, my mother took over the tradition. As my mother got older, we all pitched in to continue the tradition. Times have changed. My mother passed and most of the family has moved away. I still prepare Sunday dinner even though it may only be a few of us now. I still have all the fond memories of growing up with Sunday dinners in the south.

Book excerpt: Southern Living will help you revitalize the tradition of Sunday supper in this new book by award-winning author Cynthia Graubart. Sunday supper doesn't have a set time. It can be formal, or it can be casual. It can take place after a lazy Sunday afternoon spent at the lake, it can be the delicious conclusion to your day after church, or after a game of touch football in the back yard. The key to supper is that it brings family and friends together over food that has been prepared with care and many times from cherished family recipes. Organized in five distinct chapters, Sunday Suppers is designed to help you create delicious meals without too much muss and fuss. More than 50 easy-to-make main dishes are perfectly paired with appetizers or salads, sides, drinks, and desserts. Some of the delicious meals you'll find inside include Braised Short Ribs, served with Hot Bacon Potato Salad with Green Beans and finished with Mississippi Mud Cupcakes, or Fall Chicken Casserole with Fresh Herb Spoon Rolls, and Tart Cherry Crisp for dessert. You might want to try your hand at Tomato & Feta Shrimp, served alongside Herbs and Greens Salad, with Peach Melba Shortbread Bars for dessert. With easy menu-planning ideas, cooking tricks, tips for stocking the pantry, and around-the-table inspiration for everything from decorating the table, you'll have all of the tools you need to host a proper Sunday supper.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First established 150 years ago, Chicago Sinai is one of America’s oldest Reform Jewish congregations. Its founders were upwardly mobile and civically committed men and women, founders and partners of banks and landmark businesses like Hart Schaffner & Marx, Sears & Roebuck, and the giant meatpacking firm Morris & Co. As explicitly modern Jews, Sinai’s members supported and led civic institutions and participated actively in Chicago politics. Perhaps most radically, their Sunday services, introduced in 1874 and still celebrated today, became a hallmark of the congregation. In Sundays at Sinai, Tobias Brinkmann brings modern Jewish history, immigration, urban history, and religious history together to trace the roots of radical Reform Judaism from across the Atlantic to this rapidly growing American metropolis. Brinkmann shines a light on the development of an urban reform congregation, illuminating Chicago Sinai’s practices and history, and its contribution to Christian-Jewish dialogue in the United States. Chronicling Chicago Sinai’s radical beginnings in antebellum Chicago to the present, Sundays at Sinai is the extraordinary story of a leading Jewish Reform congregation in one of America’s great cities.
