Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sunday Night Lectures on "the Land and the Book" This hurried visit to the land of patriarchs and prophets, the land of evangelists and apos tles, and above all the land of Jesus Christ, has given deepened love to Him who is the end of revelation, the ideal of character, the inspiration of life, and the glory of eternity. That this vol ume may honor the Bible and glorify Christ is the author's chief desire and prayer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Now this Student Edition in two volumes makes this rich, rugged story of the American pioneer spirit more accessible to young readers. Patrick Smith tells of three generations of the MacIveys, a Florida family battling the hardships of the frontier. The story opens in 1858, when Tobias and Emma MacIvey arrive in the Florida wilderness with their son, Zech, to start a new life, and ends in 1968 with Solomon MacIvey, who realizes that his wealth has not been worth the cost to the land. Between is a sweeping story rich in Florida history with a cast of memorable characters who battle wild animals, rustlers, Confederate deserters, mosquitoes, starvation, hurricanes, and freezes to carve a kingdom out of the Florida swamp. In this volume, meet young Zech MacIvey, who learns to ride like the wind through the Florida scrub on Ishmael, his marshtackie horse, his dogs, Nip and Tuck, at this side. His parents, Tobias and Emma, scratch a living from the land, gathering wild cows from the swamp and herding them across the state to market. Zech learns the ways of the land from the Seminoles, with whom his life becomes entwined as he grows into manhood. Next in series > > See all of the books in this series

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Land and Land Policy: Speeches, Lectures, and Miscellaneous Writings The most important matter in this collection is that with which it opens - Our Land and Land Policy - given to the public for the first time since its original limited publication in 1871, when its author was only locally known in San Francisco as a newspaper writer. It en gaged, with other work, four months in the writing, and was Mr. George's first attempt to set forth the essentials of his philosophy. Of it he said long afterwards: Some thing like a thousand copies were sold, but I saw that to command attention the work must be done more thor oughly. The work was done more thoroughly in Prog ress and Poverty eight years later. To that celebrated book Our Land and Land Policy bears the relation of acorn to oak. Mr. George towards the end of his life con templated republishing the little work, believing that it might interest many whom the larger book would not atfirst reach. Death intervened between the plan and its carrying out. Mr. George thought of making such changes in Our Land and Land Policy as in his opinion would fit it more nearly to the present times, but as his was the only hand that could properly do this, is here pre sented precisely as he published 1871. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Color of the Land brings the histories of Creek Indians, African Americans, and whites in Oklahoma together into one story that explores the way races and nations were made and remade in conflicts over who would own land, who would farm it, and who would rule it. This story disrupts expected narratives of the American past, revealing how identities--race, nation, and class--took new forms in struggles over the creation of different systems of property. Conflicts were unleashed by a series of sweeping changes: the forced "removal" of the Creeks from their homeland to Oklahoma in the 1830s, the transformation of the Creeks' enslaved black population into landed black Creek citizens after the Civil War, the imposition of statehood and private landownership at the turn of the twentieth century, and the entrenchment of a sharecropping economy and white supremacy in the following decades. In struggles over land, wealth, and power, Oklahomans actively defined and redefined what it meant to be Native American, African American, or white. By telling this story, David Chang contributes to the history of racial construction and nationalism as well as to southern, western, and Native American history.

He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Studies From the Old and New Testaments: Covering the International Sunday-School Lessons for 1892 This volume of Bible Studies has been written in India, in the midst of incessant evangelistic labors. Partly in Calcutta, partly in the "Heart of the Himalayas"; partly on the burning plains of the North-west provinces, in the Holy City of Benares, where Hinduism is entrenched in the midst of a people and a priesthood who have lived, taught, and practiced the rites and ceremonies of this "world-old religion" for more than three thousands of years; partly in Lucknow, the beautiful city of the late Kings of Oudh; partly in Agra, the famous city of Akbar the Great and Shah Jahan; partly in Delhi, the romantic and picturesque capital of the Great Moguls. Its last chapters were finished and this preface is now being written amid the beautiful Himalayan Hills, in the bosom of which nestles the fair summer capital of India, under the rule of Great Britain. The author has had few books of reference to consult, and has been compelled to write during such fragments of time as he could snatch between two and three evangelistic meetings a day, sometimes among natives and sometimes among European audiences. He has enjoyed one advantage, however. The Old Testament has had a fresh illumination in his mind by reason of the Oriental scenes and customs which have been the familiar every-day sights of this year. The temples, the groves, the gardens, the dress and the manner of the people out here are essentially the same as they were in the days of Isaiah and Jeremiah. There are temples on every hill-top and in every grove. Baal-worship, under other names and forms, is the same; the sins and practices of the people are the same as those into which the corrupt kings and people of Israel had fallen at the time that these apostles and preachers tenderly besought them to return to the Lord. The scenery which afforded them their finest imagery is the same and the familiar every-day customs of the people are the same. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some American Evils and Their Remedies: A Series of Five Short Religio-Secular Sunday Evening Lectures Delivered From the Pulpit of the First Christian Church, Emporia, Kan;, In the Summer of 1889 "My country, 't is of thee, Sweet land of liberty, - Of thee I sing; Land where my fathers died, Land of the pilgrim's pride, From every mountain side, Let freedom ring!" Samuel F. Smith. America is to-day the king of nations. Though youngest among the giants of earth, our nation is the most intelligent, the most wealthy, and, consequently, the most powerful of all. Herein lies our danger. The great nations of antiquity did not decline and fall while ignorant, poor, and weak, but after they had attained to mightiness, and in that mightiness waxed corrupt. History repeats itself. To the student of the times no fact is more patent than that America is rapidly becoming America's worst enemy. It is desired in these five short lectures to point out a few of America's evils, and to propose what shall seem to be the most certain and speedy remedy for each. The author does not pretend to be exhaustive, but simply suggestive. He aims at an agitation. If he shall succeed in arousing one thoughtful mind to an appreciative sense of the awful dangers threatening our national fabric, his work shall not have been in vain. What a glorious land is ours! Book excerpt: Excerpt from Registering Titles to Land: A Series of Lectures Delivered at Yale My first duty in occupying this chair to-day must be to express my deep gratitude to the corpo ration Of your celebrated University, for appoint ing me this year as Lecturer according to the William L. Storrs foundation. I must sincerely confess that I feel quite unworthy of the great honor bestowed on me, and at the same time quite unequal to assuming the responsibilities Of such an appointment. I beg, therefore, the indulgence Of all who shall gather here to attend these lec tures; and I plead quite guilty of an imperfect and defective knowledge Of your language. We are much too severe in France on foreigners who at tempt to Speak our tongue, and we only realize when we go abroad ourselves how very difficult it is for us to express correctly an idea in any other than our native tongue.
