Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work initiates a systematic analysis of the representation of real forms of even degree as sums of powers of linear forms and the resulting implications in real algebraic geometry, number theory, combinatorics, functional analysis, and numerical analysis. The proofs utilize elementary techniques from linear algebra, convexity, number theory, and real algebraic geometry and many explicit examples and relevant historical remarks are presented.

Book excerpt: New methods are developed to describe prime ideals in skew polynomial rings [italic capital]S = [italic capital]R[[italic]y; [lowercase Greek]Tau, [lowercase Greek]Delta]], for automorphisms [lowercase Greek]Tau and [lowercase Greek]Tau-derivations [lowercase Greek]Delta] of a noetherian coefficient ring [italic capital]R.
Book Synopsis Markov Cell Structures near a Hyperbolic Set by : F. Thomas Farrell
Download or read book Markov Cell Structures near a Hyperbolic Set written by F. Thomas Farrell and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1993 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors' argument is a spiritual descendent of earlier work of Adler and Weiss, Sinaĭ, and Bowen, and involves a close study of triangulations. The discussion is long and technical, but the outline of the proof is sketched clearly in Section 1 for the special case of [italic]F an expanding immersion. A concluding section lists problems on hyperbolic sets, Markov partitions, and related matters; remarks on topological invariants, including the conjectured vanishing of Pontryagin classes for manifolds supporting Anosov diffeomorphisms, may be of particular interest.
Book Synopsis Phantom Homology by : Melvin Hochster
Download or read book Phantom Homology written by Melvin Hochster and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1993 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses a powerful new technique, tight closure, to provide insight into many different problems that were previously not recognized as related. The authors develop the notion of weakly Cohen-Macaulay rings or modules and prove some very general acyclicity theorems. These theorems are applied to the new theory of phantom homology, which uses tight closure techniques to show that certain elements in the homology of complexes must vanish when mapped to well-behaved rings. These ideas are used to strengthen various local homological conjectures. Initially, the authors develop the theory in positive characteristic, but it can be extended to characteristic 0 by the method of reduction to characteristic $p$. The book would be suitable for use in an advanced graduate course in commutative algebra.

Download or read book Categories of Modules over Endomorphism Rings written by Theodore Gerard Faticoni and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1993 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the goal of the memoir to develop a functorial transfer of properties between [italic capital]A and [script capital]M[subscript italic capital]E, the category of modules over [italic capital]E, that is more sensitive than the traditional starting point, Hom([italic capital]A, ·). This memoir should be accessible to anyone who has a working knowledge of rings, modules, functors, and categories equivalent to that gained by reading Anderson and Fuller's text "Rings and Categories of Modules."
Book Synopsis Lattice Structures on Banach Spaces by : Nigel John Kalton
Download or read book Lattice Structures on Banach Spaces written by Nigel John Kalton and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1993 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general problem addressed in this work is to characterize the possible Banach lattice structures that a separable Banach space may have. The basic questions of uniqueness of lattice structure for function spaces have been studied before, but here the approach uses random measure representations for operators in a new way to obtain more powerful conclusions.
Book Synopsis Random Perturbations of Hamiltonian Systems by : Mark Iosifovich Freĭdlin
Download or read book Random Perturbations of Hamiltonian Systems written by Mark Iosifovich Freĭdlin and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1994 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Random perturbations of Hamiltonian systems in Euclidean spaces lead to stochastic processes on graphs, and these graphs are defined by the Hamiltonian. In the case of white-noise type perturbations, the limiting process will be a diffusion process on the graph. Its characteristics are expressed through the Hamiltonian and the characteristics of the noise. Freidlin and Wentzell calculate the process on the graph under certain conditions and develop a technique which allows consideration of a number of asymptotic problems. The Dirichlet problem for corresponding elliptic equations with a small parameter are connected with boundary problems on the graph.
Book Synopsis Elliptic Regularization and Partial Regularity for Motion by Mean Curvature by : Tom Ilmanen
Download or read book Elliptic Regularization and Partial Regularity for Motion by Mean Curvature written by Tom Ilmanen and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1994 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study Brakke's motion of varifolds by mean curvature in the special case that the initial surface is an integral cycle, giving a new existence proof by mean of elliptic regularization. Under a uniqueness hypothesis, we obtain a weakly continuous family of currents solving Brakke's motion. These currents remain within the corresponding level-set motion by mean curvature, as defined by Evans-Spruck and Chen-Giga-Goto. Now let [italic capital]T0 be the reduced boundary of a bounded set of finite perimeter in [italic capital]R[superscript italic]n. If the level-set motion of the support of [italic capital]T0 does not develop positive Lebesgue measure, then there corresponds a unique integral [italic]n-current [italic capital]T, [partial derivative/boundary/degree of a polynomial symbol][italic capital]T = [italic capital]T0, whose time-slices form a unit density Brakke motion. Using Brakke's regularity theorem, spt [italic capital]T is smooth [script capital]H[superscript italic]n-almost everywhere. In consequence, almost every level-set of the level-set flow is smooth [script capital]H[superscript italic]n-almost everywhere in space-time.

In addition the volume contains papers on related aspects of Probability, classical Convexity and also Partial Differential Equations and Banach Algebras. There are also two expository papers on topics which proved to be very much related to the main topic of the seminar. One is Statistical Learning Theory and the other is Models of Statistical Physics. All the papers of this collection are original research papers.
Book Synopsis Unraveling the Integral Knot Concordance Group by : Neal W. Stoltzfus
Download or read book Unraveling the Integral Knot Concordance Group written by Neal W. Stoltzfus and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1977 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The group of concordance classes of high dimensional homotopy spheres knotted in codimension two in the standard sphere has an intricate algebraic structure which this paper unravels. The first level of invariants is given by the classical Alexander polynomial. By means of a transfer construction, the integral Seifert matrices of knots whose Alexander polynomial is a power of a fixed irreducible polynomial are related to forms with the appropriate Hermitian symmetry on torsion free modules over an order in the algebraic number field determined by the Alexander polynomial. This group is then explicitly computed in terms of standard arithmetic invariants. In the symmetric case, this computation shows there are no elements of order four with an irreducible Alexander polynomial. Furthermore, the order is not necessarily Dedekind and non-projective modules can occur. The second level of invariants is given by constructing an exact sequence relating the global concordance group to the individual pieces described above. The integral concordance group is then computed by a localization exact sequence relating it to the rational group computed by J. Levine and a group of torsion linking forms.
Book Synopsis On Axiomatic Approaches to Vertex Operator Algebras and Modules by : Igor Frenkel
Download or read book On Axiomatic Approaches to Vertex Operator Algebras and Modules written by Igor Frenkel and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1993 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic definitions and properties of vertex operator algebras, modules, intertwining operators and related concepts are presented, following a fundamental analogy with Lie algebra theory. The first steps in the development of the general theory are taken, and various natural and useful reformulations of the axioms are given. In particular, tensor products of algebras and modules, adjoint vertex operators and contragradient modules, adjoint intertwining operators and fusion rules are studied in greater depth. This paper lays the monodromy-free axiomatic foundation of the general theory of vertex operator algebras, modules and intertwining operators.

Book Synopsis Frontiers in Global Optimization by : Christodoulos A. Floudas
Download or read book Frontiers in Global Optimization written by Christodoulos A. Floudas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Optimization has emerged as one of the most exciting new areas of mathematical programming. Global optimization has received a wide attraction from many fields in the past few years, due to the success of new algorithms for addressing previously intractable problems from diverse areas such as computational chemistry and biology, biomedicine, structural optimization, computer sciences, operations research, economics, and engineering design and control. This book contains refereed invited papers submitted at the 4th international confer ence on Frontiers in Global Optimization held at Santorini, Greece during June 8-12, 2003. Santorini is one of the few sites of Greece, with wild beauty created by the explosion of a volcano which is in the middle of the gulf of the island. The mystic landscape with its numerous mult-extrema, was an inspiring location particularly for researchers working on global optimization. The three previous conferences on "Recent Advances in Global Opti mization", "State-of-the-Art in Global Optimization", and "Optimization in Computational Chemistry and Molecular Biology: Local and Global approaches" took place at Princeton University in 1991, 1995, and 1999, respectively. The papers in this volume focus on de terministic methods for global optimization, stochastic methods for global optimization, distributed computing methods in global optimization, and applications of global optimiza tion in several branches of applied science and engineering, computer science, computational chemistry, structural biology, and bio-informatics.
