Book Synopsis National minimum wage by : Low Pay Commission
Download or read book National minimum wage written by Low Pay Commission and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008-03-05 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Low Pay Commission report 2008 describes the impact of the increases in the national minimum wage in 2006 and 2007 on earnings, on the labour market, on small firms and on prices, profits, productivity, investment and business start-ups and failures. It then examines various groups of workers affected by the minimum wage. A further section looks at compliance and enforcement. The Commission then outlines the criteria considered for setting the rates. Its recommendations are: adult rate to increase from £5.52 to £5.73 an hour in October 2008; youth development rate to increase from £4.60 to £4.77 an hour and the 16-17 rate should increase from £3.40 to £3.53. Again it is recommended that 21 year olds receive the adult rate, and the Commission would welcome the Government's reasoning should it again oppose this recommendation. The Commission criticises the erosion in the quality of data provided by the Office for National Statistics. Further recommendations cover the accommodation offset, guidance on sleepovers, and fair piece rates.

Book Synopsis Business in Britain in the Twentieth Century by : Richard Coopey
Download or read book Business in Britain in the Twentieth Century written by Richard Coopey and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-08-13 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of fresh, incisive scholarship, by some of the leading business historians, critically examines the nature of economic recovery in Britain in recent years. Covering the key issues for business history in this period, the book confronts the traditional literature on conclusions of relative decline, and monocausal, simplistic explanations. It provides an impressive range of studies forming a platform for a new debate on the nature of British business in the 20th century. Themes include productivity, management, research and development, marketing, regional clusters and networks, industrial policy, the use of technology, and gender. Sector studies include newer, post-war hopefuls and successes including: * aerospace, * IT, * retail, * banking, * overseas investment, * the creative industries. The book demonstrates that our understanding of the historic strengths and weaknesses of business in Britain, and the shifting balance between sectors of the economy, has until now been poorly understood, and that British business history needs a fundamental reappraisal.

Advancing a class-centred explanation, the text situates contemporary working age active labour market policy as the contingent outcome of a long struggle over curtailment of labour autonomy and the challenges arising from policy ‘success’ for securing social cohesion, state legitimacy and better economic conditions for growth.
