Book excerpt: Team of Vipers: My 500 Extraordinary Days in the Trump White House by Cliff Sims: Conversation Starters After campaigning for Trump, Cliff Sims joined the White House because he liked the opportunity of interacting "with the most powerful person in the planet." The White House was "absolutely out of control" but Sims did not always excoriate the president. The book describes the relationship between Trump and the first lady Melania Trump as defying public perception. Mrs. Trump is shown being protective of her husband. Most of the book discusses the feuds and chaotic relations between staff members. Being in the White House feels like being in the "Game of Thrones, but with the characters from Veep." Team of Vipers is an instant New York Times bestseller. A Brief Look Inside: EVERY GOOD BOOK CONTAINS A WORLD FAR DEEPER than the surface of its pages. Book excerpt: THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER "Sims’s vivid portrait of Trump shrewdly balances admiration with misgivings, and his intricate, engrossing accounts of White House vendettas and power plays have a good mix of immersion and perspective. The result is one of the best of the recent flood of Trump tell-alls." —Publishers Weekly The first honest insider’s account of the Trump administration. If you hate Trump you need the truth; if you love Trump you need the truth. After standing at Donald Trump’s side on Election Night, Cliff Sims joined him in the West Wing as Special Assistant to the President and Director of White House Message Strategy. He soon found himself pulled into the President’s inner circle as a confidante, an errand boy, an advisor, a punching bag, and a friend. Sometimes all in the same conversation. As a result, Sims gained unprecedented access to the President, sitting in on private meetings with key Congressional officials, world leaders, and top White House advisors. He saw how Trump handled the challenges of the office, and he learned from Trump himself how he saw the world. For five hundred days, Sims also witnessed first-hand the infighting and leaking, the anger, joy, and recriminations. He had a role in some of the President’s biggest successes, and he shared the blame for some of his administration’s worst disasters. He gained key, often surprising insights into the players of the Trump West Wing, from Jared Kushner and John Kelly to Steve Bannon and Kellyanne Conway. He even helped Trump craft his enemies list, knowing who was loyal and who was not. And he took notes. Hundreds of pages of notes. In real-time. Sims stood with the President in the eye of the storm raging around him, and now he tells the story that no one else has written—because no one else could. The story of what it was really like in the West Wing as a member of the President’s team. The story of power and palace intrigue, backstabbing and bold victories, as well as painful moral compromises, occasionally with yourself. Team of Vipers tells the full story, as only a true insider could.

Sample Book Insights: #1 On August 21, 2015, I was the CEO of a fast-growing media company called Yellowhammer, which began as my blog when I was a student at the University of Alabama. I focused on state politics and the behind-the-scenes machinations of lawmakers. My biggest weekly feature was Rumors and Rumblings, giving the scoop on what was really going on inside the Alabama State House. #2 I was nervous about interviewing Trump. His polling numbers showed he was going to win the state, but I was still concerned about his popularity. I wanted to ask him about his past positions and whether he’d change them if he became president. #3 Trump also said he was very pro-choice, but also claimed he had changed his stance because of two friends who had gotten abortions and their child turned out well. #4 I was more aligned with Ted Cruz, a rock-ribbed conservative who’d been giving the party establishment fits since getting elected to the Senate a few years before. I was concerned about these character questions, though. During an event organized by several faith-based organizations, Trump had identified himself as a Protestant, but when asked whether he had ever felt inclined to ask God for forgiveness, his answer raised eyebrows.

Book excerpt: Mr. Trump's Wild Ride: The Thrills, Chills, Screams, and Occasional Blackouts of an Extraordinary Presidency by Major Garrett: Conversation Starters Donald Trump's worldview is shaped by TV and his judgment and reactions are reinforced by it. TV is Trump and Trump is TV. In the issues involving tax cuts, judicial appointments, immigration restrictions, and foreign policy, the president has created chaos. He ignores memos and fails to inform his advisers his decisions before twitting them. He uses his size and bearing to intimidate. The presidency has become "primal." This meant policy analysis is not encouraged, making it impossible for his advisers to work with him. Publishers Weekly says Major Garrett does "the difficult task of being both hard-hitting and even-handed." It is one of the best accounts yet of Trump's impact. Mr. Trump's Wild Ride is written by Garrett who is the chief correspondent of CBS News since 2012. He has covered the White House for three different news.. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Fake news," wild conspiracy theories, misleading claims, doctored photos, lies peddled as facts, facts dismissed as lies—citizens of democracies increasingly inhabit a public sphere teeming with competing claims and counterclaims, with no institution or person possessing the authority to settle basic disputes in a definitive way. The problem may be novel in some of its details—including the role of today's political leaders, along with broadcast and digital media, in intensifying the epistemic anarchy—but the challenge of determining truth in a democratic world has a backstory. In this lively and illuminating book, historian Sophia Rosenfeld explores a longstanding and largely unspoken tension at the heart of democracy between the supposed wisdom of the crowd and the need for information to be vetted and evaluated by a learned elite made up of trusted experts. What we are witnessing now is the unraveling of the détente between these competing aspects of democratic culture. In four bracing chapters, Rosenfeld substantiates her claim by tracing the history of the vexed relationship between democracy and truth. She begins with an examination of the period prior to the eighteenth-century Age of Revolutions, where she uncovers the political and epistemological foundations of our democratic world. Subsequent chapters move from the Enlightenment to the rise of both populist and technocratic notions of democracy between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to the troubling trends—including the collapse of social trust—that have led to the rise of our "post-truth" public life. Rosenfeld concludes by offering suggestions for how to defend the idea of truth against the forces that would undermine it.

Book excerpt: The instant #1 New York Times bestseller | A Washington Post Notable Book | One of NPR's Best Books of 2021 The definitive behind-the-scenes story of Trump's final year in office, by Phil Rucker and Carol Leonnig, the Pulitzer-Prize winning reporters and authors of A Very Stable Genius. “Chilling.” – Anderson Cooper “Jaw-dropping.” – John Berman “Shocking.” – John Heilemann “Explosive.” – Hallie Jackson “Blockbuster new reporting.” – Nicolle Wallace “Bracing new revelations.” – Brian Williams “Bombshell reporting.” – David Muir The true story of what took place in Donald Trump’s White House during a disastrous 2020 has never before been told in full. What was really going on around the president, as the government failed to contain the coronavirus and over half a million Americans perished? Who was influencing Trump after he refused to concede an election he had clearly lost and spread lies about election fraud? To answer these questions, Phil Rucker and Carol Leonnig reveal a dysfunctional and bumbling presidency’s inner workings in unprecedented, stunning detail. Focused on Trump and the key players around him—the doctors, generals, senior advisers, and Trump family members— Rucker and Leonnig provide a forensic account of the most devastating year in a presidency like no other. Their sources were in the room as time and time again Trump put his personal gain ahead of the good of the country. These witnesses to history tell the story of him longing to deploy the military to the streets of American cities to crush the protest movement in the wake of the killing of George Floyd, all to bolster his image of strength ahead of the election. These sources saw firsthand his refusal to take the threat of the coronavirus seriously—even to the point of allowing himself and those around him to be infected. This is a story of a nation sabotaged—economically, medically, and politically—by its own leader, culminating with a groundbreaking, minute-by-minute account of exactly what went on in the Capitol building on January 6, as Trump’s supporters so easily breached the most sacred halls of American democracy, and how the president reacted. With unparalleled access, Rucker and Leonnig explain and expose exactly who enabled—and who foiled—Trump as he sought desperately to cling to power. A classic and heart-racing work of investigative reporting, this book is destined to be read and studied by citizens and historians alike for decades to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary of Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House This book is a non-fiction book written from the perspective of Michael Wolff. It covers the events and people surrounding Donald Trump from May 2016 through the first 200 days or so of his Presidency. It is based on conversations Wolff had with the President and the people surrounding him. Through the eyes of Trump's closest aides and family members, the book begins with the understanding they all share: Trump will lose the election and everyone will get what they want. However, once Trump is president, everything changes. Trump's White House quickly becomes a power struggle, mostly between Bannon, Trump's campaign manager, and Kushner, Trump's son-in-law. The question is not who will control Trump, because he is uncontrollable, but rather who can get the last word in. Thus, in some ways, this book is more about Bannon and Kushner than about Trump. As expected, having a White House with two competing parties without a leader to make final decisions resulted in a President who appeared bipolar. Kushner started out by hiring a team of other Jews to help him. In retaliation, Bannon started to arrange for leaks about Kushner and Ivanka, and they returned the favor. In time, it was clear that Bannon was losing the war. To placate everyone, Trump agreed not to fire Bannon. However, Trump also promoted Kushner and Ivanka at the same time. By the first 100 days into the Presidency, there were three separate PR teams in the White House. One for Trump, one for Bannon and one for Kushner and Ivanka. Thus, when Trump fired Comey and Muller took over as the head of the Russia investigation, the White House could not get itself organized to mount a solid defense. Eventually, the war came to a head. Trump overheard Bannon screaming at Hope Hicks, one of the people who was helping Kushner and Ivanka manage Trump. Trump himself was completely confused. The situation was reversing. It was Kushner and Ivanka who had pushed for Comey to be fired, and that was turning into a hot mess. Their solution - hire Scaramucci as the Director of Communications - also backfired. Bannon was doing well. At least, he was doing well until Trump hired Kelly to be his new Chief of Staff. Determined to settle the quarrel that was tearing the White House apart, Bannon had to go. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “Compelling… this book couldn’t be more timely.” – Jill Abramson, New York Times Book Review From the Recipient of the 2017 Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism Called "disgraceful," "third-rate," and "not nice" by Donald Trump, NBC News correspondent Katy Tur reported on—and took flak from—the most captivating and volatile presidential candidate in American history. Katy Tur lived out of a suitcase for a year and a half, following Trump around the country, powered by packets of peanut butter and kept clean with dry shampoo. She visited forty states with the candidate, made more than 3,800 live television reports, and tried to endure a gazillion loops of Elton John’s "Tiny Dancer"—a Trump rally playlist staple. From day 1 to day 500, Tur documented Trump’s inconsistencies, fact-checked his falsities, and called him out on his lies. In return, Trump repeatedly singled Tur out. He tried to charm her, intimidate her, and shame her. At one point, he got a crowd so riled up against Tur, Secret Service agents had to walk her to her car. None of it worked. Facts are stubborn. So was Tur. She was part of the first women-led politics team in the history of network news. The Boys on the Bus became the Girls on the Plane. But the circus remained. Through all the long nights, wild scoops, naked chauvinism, dodgy staffers, and fevered debates, no one had a better view than Tur. Unbelievable is her darkly comic, fascinatingly bizarre, and often scary story of how America sent a former reality show host to the White House. It’s also the story of what it was like for Tur to be there as it happened, inside a no-rules world where reporters were spat on, demeaned, and discredited. Tur was a foreign correspondent who came home to her most foreign story of all. Unbelievable is a must-read for anyone who still wakes up and wonders, Is this real life?
