Drag characteristics of circular, square, rectangular, triangular, diamond, and elliptical cylinders, as well as a large range of thickness-to-chord ratio symmetrical airfoil shapes, are presented as a function of Reynolds number. In addition, certain Mach number characteristics are discussed.

Book excerpt: An investigation has been conducted to find the approximate variation of the drag coefficient with Reynolds number of several cylinders having different cross-sectional shapes. Data were obtained for circular cylinders, elliptical cylinders of two fineness ratios, rectangular and diamond cylinders of three fineness ratios, and two isosceles triangular cylinders (apex forward and base forward). Three different corner radii were tested on each of the shapes, except for the circular and elliptical cylinders. Data were obtained for Reynolds numbers as low as 11,000 and as high as 2,300,000. From some cylinders, frequencies of pressure fluctuations in the wake were measured for a limited range of Reynolds numbers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the subject of wave/current flow around a cylinder, the forces induced on the cylinder by the flow, and the vibration pattern of slender structures in a marine environment. The primary aim of the book is to describe the flow pattern and the resulting load which develops when waves or current meet a cylinder. Attention is paid to the special case of a circular cylinder. The development in the forces is related to the various flow patterns and is discussed in detail. Regular as well as irregular waves are considered, and special cases like wall proximities (pipelines) are also investigated. The book is intended for MSc students with some experience in basic fluid mechanics and for PhD students.

Book excerpt: Drag measurements were obtained with circular cylinders attached to a flat-plate surface with their longitudinal axes perpendicular to the plate surface. When more than one cylinder was tested, they were alined in a spanwise row perpendicular to the free-stream velocity vector. The drag measurements were obtained through a range of Mach numbers from 2.3 to 4.6, cylinder heights ranging from approximately 0.4 to 3 times the undisturbed laminar boundary-layer thickness, and cylinder height-to-diameter ratios of 1.0 and approximately 2. Included in the paper is a complete presentation in figure form of the experimental results and a discussion of the more significant findings. An attempt is made to select the most appropriate parameters for correlating the experimental results and, where possible, these results are compared with theoretical calculations.

This book was released on 1979 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous determinations of drag coefficients for both steady and unsteady flow are reviewed for all reported experiments at critical and supercritical Reynolds numbers. The unsolved problems remaining from earlier DRES work were found to be: end effects, dust drag loading, the discrepancies between steady and unsteady flow drag forces, and the need for a further data analysis. A new analysis is also presented for the drag coefficient as a function of flow Mach number and cylinder length-diameter ratio. A plan of test is presented for drag force measurements on cylinders during Event DICE THROW, a 628-ton AN/FO explosion held in October 1976. The objectives of this experiment were to provide drag force support data for the lattice mast and all antennas in Event DICE THROW, and to extend the table of data for drag coefficients to diameters up to 18 inches. The free-flight measurement technique, using both cameras and velocity transducers for data sources, was employed on seven cylinders at 20, 10 and 7 psi overpressure levels. The expected motion of each cylinder was calculated, based on the predicted value for the drag coefficient. Finally, suggestions for the data analysis and for further research in this area are discussed. (Author).

Book excerpt: Summary: An experimental investigation concerned primarily with the extension of test data on the drag of revolving disks, cylinders, and streamline rods to high Mach numbers and Reynolds numbers is presented. A Mach number of 2.7 was reached for revolving rods with Freon 113 as the medium. The tests on disks extended to a Reynolds number of 7,000,000. Parts of the study are devoted to a reexamination of the von Kármán-Prandtl logarithmic resistance law and the Ackeret-Taylor supersonic drag formula and conditions for their validity. The tests confirm, in general, earlier theories and add certain new results. A finding of first importance is that the skin friction does not depend on the Mach number. Of interest, also, are experimental results on revolving rods at very high Mach numbers, which show drag curves of the type familiar from ballistics. A new result which may have general applicability is that the effect of surface roughness involves two distinct parameters, particle size and particle unit density. The particle size uniquely determines the Reynolds number at which the effect of the roughness first appears, whereas the particle unit density determines the behavior of the drag coefficient at higher Reynolds numbers. Beyond the critical Reynolds number at which the roughness effect appears, the drag coefficient is found to be a function of unit density. In the limiting case of particle "saturation," or a maximum density of particles, the drag coefficient remains constant as the Reynolds number is increased.

McKinney and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wind-tunnel investigation has been made on modified-square and circular cylinders to determine the effects of fineness ratio and Reynolds numbers on the crosswind drag characteristics. Fineness ratios from 2 to 14 were investigated over a Reynolds number range from approximately 300,000 to 1,650,000 which corresponded to Mach numbers from 0.057 to 0.377.The result of the investigation show that at supercraft Reynolds numbers the drag coefficient of the circular cylinder increases with increasing Reynolds number for all fineness ratios but at low fineness ratios this effect is considerably less than at higher fineness ratios. For circular cylinders in the high fineness-ratio range there is a reduction in drag as the fineness ratio is decreased except for Reynolds numbers of 900,000 and 1,000,000, whereas at low fineness ratios the opposite trend generally occurs. The addition of hemispherical ends to the circular cylinder gave a substantial decrease in drag at a fineness ratio of 3.27 but the effect was negligible at fineness ratios of 5.27 and 10. The finite-length modified-square cylinder gave the reduction in drag over the two-dimensional modified-square cylinder for the complete range of test Reynolds numbers with the lowest fineness ratio giving the lowest drag at Reynolds numbers above 3O0,OOO.
