Sample Book Insights: #1 The first step toward becoming a millionaire is to start saving. Don’t let anyone tell you that investing is too complex for regular people. We want to show you that everyone can make sound financial decisions. #2 The fast way to affluence is to reduce your expenses below your income. You have more—more than enough—and you are affluent because your income exceeds your outgo. It doesn’t matter whether you are a recent college graduate or a multimillionaire. #3 Saving is good for us for two reasons. First, it helps us avoid having serious regrets later on. Second, saving gives us the freedom to choose what we want and need now, and what we want and need in the future. #4 The first step in saving is to stop dis saving - spending more than you earn, especially by running up balances on your credit cards. Never take on credit card debt.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evidence-based approach to a more worthwhile portfolio The Index Revolution argues that active investing is a loser's game, and that a passive approach is more profitable in today's market. By adjusting your portfolio asset weights to match a performance index, you consistently earn higher rates of returns and come out on top in the long run. This book explains why, and describes how individual investors can take advantage of indexing to make their portfolio stronger and more profitable. By indexing investment operations at a very low cost, and trusting that active professionals have set securities prices as correctly as possible, you will achieve better long-term results than those who look down on passive approaches while following outdated advice that no longer works. "Beating the market" is much harder than it used to be, and investors who continue to approach the market with that mindset populate the rolls of market losers time and time again. This book explains why indexing is the preferred approach in the current investment climate, and destroys the popular perception of passive investing as a weak market strategy. Structure your portfolio to perform better over the long term Trust in the pricing and earn higher rates of return Learn why a passive approach is more consistent and worthwhile Ignore overblown, outdated advice that is doomed to disappoint All great investors share a common secret to success: rational decision-making based on objective information. The Index Revolution shows you a more rational approach to the market for a more profitable portfolio.

Sample Book Insights: #1 The traditional investment management approach is based on a single core belief: investors can beat the market, and superior managers will beat the market. That optimistic expectation was reasonable 50 years ago, but not today. Times have changed the markets so much in so many major ways that the premise has proven unrealistic. #2 The difference between a winner’s game and a loser’s game is that in a winner’s game, the outcome is determined by the correct actions of the winner, while in a loser’s game, the outcome is determined by the mistakes made by the loser. #3 The two games are fundamentally opposed. Professional tennis is a winner’s game: the outcome is determined by the actions of the winner. Amateur tennis is a loser’s game: the outcome is determined by the actions of the loser, who defeats himself or herself. #4 The new rules of the money game are extremely difficult for active mutual fund investment managers to overcome. To at least break even, they must return more than 10. 25 percent before all their costs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The best investment practitioners, the ones who get results, rely not just on their instincts and experience but on the insights of the trailblazers in their field—the people who interpret, challenge, and even devise the strategies and tools that shape investment management. But when you're in the trenches—serving clients and running a business—the voices at the front can have trouble getting through, and you may sometimes wonder if your methods are as current as your clients deserve. Strategies continue to be explored, and tactics can change almost as quickly as the markets. What's the story behind Peter Bernstein’s challenge to a fixed-asset-allocation mix? Did the financial-planning community take a wrong ideological turn in espousing it? What can behavioral finance tell you about serving your clients? What choices can you make to ensure tax efficiency in your clients' portfolios? Downside risk measures have come a long way since Markowitz brought them so much attention. But when's the last time you checked into your reward-to-semivariability ratios? How current is your understanding of the core-and-satellite approach to portfolio design? And how much do you know about putting one in place for your client? To get some answers to these and other questions, financial advisers Harold Evensky and Deena B. Katz invited some of the best minds in investment management to share their best thinking. The result is a gathering of eagles that will challenge your beliefs, reinforce your convictions, pique your curiosity, and maybe even improve some of those tried-and-true practices you put in place too long ago. So sit in on this remarkable think tank. Treat yourself to a compelling array of ideas—from the doggedly practical to the delightfully abstract—that will inform and stimulate your own thinking and reawaken the reasons you came to investment management in the first place.

Book excerpt: We live in an age of serial asset bubbles and spectacular busts. Economists, policymakers, central bankers and most people in the financial world have been blindsided by these busts, while investors have lost trillions. Economists argue that bubbles can only be spotted after they burst and that market moves are unpredictable. Yet Marathon Asset Management, a London-based investment firm managing over $50 billion of assets has developed a relatively simple method for identifying and potentially avoiding them: follow the money, or rather the trail of investment. Bubbles whether they affect a whole economy or merely a single industry, tend to attract a splurge of capital spending. Excessive investment drives down returns and leads inexorably to a bust. This was the case with both the technology bubble at the turn of the century and the US housing bubble which followed shortly after. More recently, vast sums have been invested in mining and energy. From an investor's perspective, the trick is to avoid investing in sectors, or markets, where investment spending is unduly elevated and competition is fierce, and to put one's money to work where capital expenditure is depressed, competitive conditions are more favourable and, as a result, prospective investment returns are higher. This capital cycle strategy encourages investors to eschew the simple 'growth' and 'value' dichotomy and identify firms that can deliver superior returns either because capital has been taken out of an industry, or because the business has strong barriers to entry (what Warren Buffett refers to as a 'moat'). Some of Marathon's most successful investments have come from obscure, sometimes niche operations whose businesses are protected from the destructive forces of the capital cycle. Capital Returns is a comprehensive introduction to the theory and practical implementation of the capital cycle approach to investment. Edited and with an introduction by Edward Chancellor, the book brings together 60 of the most insightful reports written between 2002 and 2014 by Marathon portfolio managers. Capital Returns provides key insights into the capital cycle strategy, all supported with real life examples from global brewers to the semiconductor industry - showing how this approach can be usefully applied to different industry conditions and how, prior to 2008, it helped protect assets from financial catastrophe. This book will be a welcome reference for serious investors who looking to maximise portfolio returns over the long run.
