Book excerpt: In their 1995 blockbuster The Discipline of Market Leaders, Michael Treacy and Fred Wiersema explained how great companies dominated their markets by offering superior value propositions. Now Treacy is back with an equally groundbreaking book—revealing how great companies master growth each year and how all businesses can identify and exploit opportunities for increased revenues, gross margins, and profits. Treacy's main point is simple—it really is possible to grow your business by 10 percent or more, year after year, in good times and bad, without cheating. Great companies already know how to do it, and the rest of us can learn their strategies and do the same thing. Using case studies from industry leaders such as Dell Computer, Home Depot, and GE, he shows the five steps that are imperative to ensure growth: • Keep the growth you have already earned • Look for growth where it's likely to be found • Take business from your competitors Treacy believes that any business can grow at a consistent double-digit rate, and with Double-Digit Growth, managers and investors now have the tools to achieve that lofty goal and maintain corporate success. Book excerpt: If you're leading a business or organization that's stuck and isn't growing as fast as you'd like it to, Breaking Through Plateaus, is the book you've been looking for. Most books, authors, consultants and seminars focus on strategies and tactics for growth. If you just do XYZ like ABC company, you'll grow just like they did. However, that rarely happens in reality. Why? Because there's always a reason why a business (or organization) is stuck--and that reason is rarely because of tactics or strategies. It's usually because of something much deeper. It's usually because there's a cultural problem. And until that culture problem is resolved, no set of tactics or strategies will get that business or organization back on a growth curve. So, what kind of culture is needed to create a fast growing business or organization? That's the question that author, Bruce D. Johnson, answers in Breaking Through Plateaus. In this book, he reveals 10 different culture drivers that when employed, can automatically produce double-digit growth in any business or organization that's currently stuck. So, if you want to grow your business faster, lead it more effectively, generate more leads, crush your competitors, improve your employees' productivity and reduce your stress, don't waste any more time. This complete summary of the ideas from Michael Silverstein's book "Treasure Hunt" shows how middle-class consumers now have far more tools available to help them make decisions about the products and services they choose to buy. Many are embarking on a personal “treasure hunt” to come up with just the right combination of products and services to fit their needs and preferences like a glove. In his book, the author also explains that another phenomenon is the fact that consumers are trading up and are willing to pay a premium for high-quality products and services which are emotionally rich for them. To fund those purchases, consumers are also relentlessly trading down in other categories. This summary demonstrates that the challenge for every business is to find practical ways to align their products and services with either the trading-up or trading-down trends. Added-value of this summary: • Save time • Understand key concepts • Expand your knowledge To learn more, read "Treasure Hunt" and find out what challenges your business faces in the 21st century and how to deal with them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study reviews the literature on the contribution of low inflation to economic growth and the subsequent widespread adoption of inflation targeting as a monetary policy framework. Edwin Truman addresses the challenges and risks associated with such a framework. Building on these foundations, the study focuses on two major international economic policy issues: (1) the implications of differing national regimes of inflation targeting for international economic policy cooperation; and (2) the adoption of inflation targeting by emerging-market economies which often lack stable monetary policy environments and credible policy authorities—a situation which, among other things, can complicate the use of the inflation targeting framework as the basis for IMF-supported stabilization programs.

Book excerpt: This book provides a historical economic analysis of two key issues relating to township and village enterprise (TVE) development in China. Firstly, the nature of the evolving relationship between TVEs and local government; in particular how TVE entrepreneurs have used institutionalized power to secure the political influence needed to defend their financial independence. Secondly, the relationship between TVEs and state-owned enterprises (SOEs), and the role of SOEs in China’s economic transition. This study highlights the importance of the role of SOEs in the “dual-track pricing system” and its impact on other parts of the economy. Township and village enterprises were key to China's success in the late twentieth century, but have more or less disappeared as an entity over the past decade or so. By measuring the structural difference of the SOE sector before and after 1998–2003 SOE reform, Jin explains their fast catch-up in productivity since the mid-1990s, as well as the relative decline of TVE productivity.

Book excerpt: Global competitiveness has always been a hotly debated issue, promoting differing opinions among economists, management strategists, business leaders, and policy analysts and consultants. Global Economic Competition provides a broad framework to compare the United States economy with 23 other global economies. This is done by presenting empirical evidence in a series of comparative analyses of economic competition using data pertaining to specific countries, industries and companies. In this volume, the electronics industries are used to illustrate an ongoing economic warfare among competing regions, nations, and cluster companies across the electronic technology chain. Employing the latest empirical data to evaluate the competitiveness of the US economy and its electronic industries and companies in the 1980s and early 1990s, Global Economic Competition will be of interest not only to those who study economics, management science and international trade, but also to policy makers and business leaders.

Book excerpt: India is emerging as one of the economic giants of the world, and is gaining international influence and global leadership as the world's largest democracy. India's performance will have far-reaching consequences on whether the economic awakening of the country, which began more than two decades ago, can become a good model to be emulated by other developing economies. This book is a collection of policy papers and data-sets for the 35 states and federal territories of India. With a comprehensive approach to competitiveness, the research done by Asia Competitiveness Institute (ACI) at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore takes into account different factors that collectively shape the ability of a nation to achieve substantial and inclusive economic development over a sustained period of time. ACI's methodology goes beyond rankings to conduct policy simulations on how each state or federal territory can improve its competitiveness. These policy simulations are a compelling value-added proposition enabling policymakers, industry leaders and administrators to identify relative challenges and opportunities, and to prioritise areas when crafting policies and development strategies.
