The National Conference for Community and Justice is dedicated to fighting bias, bigotry, and racism and promoting understanding and respect among all races, religions, and cultures through education, advocacy, and conflict resolution. The National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ) was founded in 1927 as the National Conference for Christians and Jews, in response to anti-Catholic sentiment being expressed during Al Smith's run for the Democratic nomination. Its founders included prominent social activists such as Jane Addams and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Charles Evans Hughes who dedicated the organization to bringing diverse people together to address interfaith divisions. Several years later NCCJ expanded its work to include all issues of social justice including race, class, gender equity, sexual orientation and the rights of people with different abilities. In 1934, the National Conference for Christians and Jews NCCJ) came up with the idea of celebrating National Brotherhood Week during the third week of February. But it only lasted through the 1980s. In the 1990's, the name was changed to the National Conference for Community and Justice to better reflect the breadth and depth of its mission, the growing diversity of our country and our need to be more inclusive.

The dream of a national fund to purchase land for a Jewish State in Ottoman-controlled Palestine, to be used to build the foundations of a Jewish state--became a reality with this organization. The honoree, Joel L. Shain, specializes in governmental, administrative, appellate and banking law is President of Shain, Schaffer & Rafanello, P.C. He took his first legal position with the New Jersey State Attorney General's Office and served as Chief Counsel to the Department of Banking. While Chief Counsel, Mr. Shain assisted in the development of legislation that permitted banks to form holding companies and to establish branches state-wide. Upon entering private law practice, in which he has been engaged for over forty years. He also served as a New Jersey (1967) and U.S. District Court (1969) judge. instrumental in developing and promulgating plain language consumer legislation in New Jersey. Mr. Shain is a former two term Mayor of the City of Orange and is a founder of Suburban Cablevision, now a part of Comcast.
