Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islam and Christianity in Medieval Anatolia offers a comparative approach to understanding the spread of Islam and Muslim culture in medieval Anatolia. It aims to reassess work in the field since the 1971 classic by Speros Vryonis, The Decline of Hellenism in Asia Minor and the Process of Islamization which treats the process of transformation from a Byzantinist perspective. Since then, research has offered insights into individual aspects of Christian-Muslim relations, but no overview has appeared. Moreover, very few scholars of Islamic studies have examined the problem, meaning evidence in Arabic, Persian and Turkish has been somewhat neglected at the expense of Christian sources, and too little attention has been given to material culture. The essays in this volume examine the interaction between Christianity and Islam in medieval Anatolia through three distinct angles, opening with a substantial introduction by the editors to explain both the research background and the historical problem, making the work accessible to scholars from other fields. The first group of essays examines the Christian experience of living under Muslim rule, comparing their experiences in several of the major Islamic states of Anatolia between the eleventh and fifteenth centuries, especially the Seljuks and the Ottomans. The second set of essays examines encounters between Christianity and Islam in art and intellectual life. They highlight the ways in which some traditions were shared across confessional divides, suggesting the existence of a common artistic and hence cultural vocabulary. The final section focusses on the process of Islamisation, above all as seen from the Arabic, Persian and Turkish textual evidence with special attention to the role of Sufism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'An energy, a pulse form of quantum physics perhaps, alive at the margins of sleep or madness, and more often in the whispering of a single unwelcome thought.' The Economist According to Islamic tradition, Allah created three types of beings: angels, made of light; humans, made of earth; and jinn, made of smokeless fire. Supernatural, shape-shifting, intelligent and blessed with free will and remarkable powers, jinn have over the ages been given many names - demon, spirit, ghoul, genie, ifrit and shaitan. Neither human nor immortal, they roam the earth inhabiting dark and empty places, luring humans to their deaths or demonically possessing them if harmed or offended. Despite the fact they cannot be seen, jinn are said to be strangely human-like - marrying, bearing children, forming communities and tribes, eating, sleeping, playing and facing judgement like any other human. They are ever-present partners in the human experience, causing endless mischief, providing amazing services and sometimes inducing sheer terror. Believed in by hundreds of millions of people throughout the world and from all faiths, jinn have played a particularly central role in the literature, culture and belief systems of the Middle East and the Islamic world. Legends of the Fire Spirits explores through time and across nations the enduring phenomenon of the jinn. From North Africa to Central Asia, from the Mediterranean to sub-Saharan Africa and beyond, this riveting, often chilling, yet reasoned book draws on long-forgotten ancient testimonies, medieval histories, colonial records, anthropologist's reports and traveller's tales to explore the different types of jinn, their behaviour, society, culture and long history of contact with humankind. It documents their links with famous figures in history such as King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba and illustrates the varied and vivid portrayals of jinn in world literature. In essence Legends of the Fire Spirits demonstrates the colourful diversity of human culture and the durability of faith and is a magnificent and indispensable portrayal of the rich folklore of the Islamic world.

Book excerpt: The origins, nature, function and effects of imagination have engrossed writers, theologians, philosophers and practitioners of the arts across the ages; its influence on painting and music continues to be debated. It has been simultaneously feared as a dangerous, uncontrollable force and revered as the supreme visionary power. Cocking's Imagination is an exploration of the history of imagination from antiquity to the Renaissance. The book opens with a treatment of imagination in the writings of Aristotle and Plato. Developments in the Middle Ages are traced, with particular attention to the parallel tradition in Islamic thought of the period and the book pursues the concept through the theories of Dante and the Neo-platonists to the High Renaissance. The manuscript was left unfinished on Professor Cocking's death in 1986 and has been edited by Penelope Murray, who adds an introductory essay. The book will be of particular value as a background to the explosion of interest in the imagination in the Romantic period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time’s Fool: Essays in Context is a collection of essays on a broad range of topics, from Gilgamesh to James Joyce – and beyond: to Kazuo Ishiguro, Michael Ondaatje, Yaşar Kemal, Cormac McCarthy, Abdulrahman Munif, and many others. Time’s Fool is a memorial to the life work of A. Clare Brandabur, who walked away from a tenure-track teaching position at the University of Illinois to embark on a career of teaching in Middle Eastern universities in Jordan, Syria, Bahrain, occupied Palestine, Cyprus, Ankara, and finally Istanbul, where she taught for the last decade and a half of her life. Had Clare stayed with a career at a “Research I” university in the United States, her scholarship would have been far less rich and free-wheeling – more narrow, concentrated, and specialized – and she would not have been able to help and inspire her graduate and undergraduate students from the Near East and, especially during her last five or six years at Fatih University, from around the world. The essays are organized into five main groups, from “Gender and Family Relations” and “Ecocriticism,” to “Colonialism and Post-Colonialism,” “Colonialism and Ireland,” and “Colonialism, Palestine, Genocide”; and a final ‘catch-all’ section of “Miscellaneous Essays” that includes Gilgamesh, T.E. Lawrence, Yaşar Kemal, Graham Green, and modern theory. There are also sub-categories that transcend the six sections, such as Arab Literature, Catholicism, Women’s Studies, and Mythology – something for everyone, in short. Clare’s essays give a sense of her breadth of scholarship and her very rich play of mind, but the real monument to her life’s work is in the hearts and minds of the students from around the world whom she influenced.

Book excerpt: How could settlement emerge in an early modern 'world on the move'? How did the Sufis imprint their influence on the cultural memory of their communities? Weaving together investigations of architecture, ethnography, local history, and migration, Making Space offers bold new insights into Indian, Islamic, and comparative early modern history. Nile Green explores the tensions between mobility and locality through the ways in which Sufi Islam responded to the cultural demands of moving and settling. Central to this process were the shrines, rituals, and narratives of the saints. Tracing how different Muslim communities located their sense of belonging, this book shows how Afghan, Mughal, and Hindustani Muslims constructed new homelands while remembering different places of origin.
