Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Suds Series, J. Daniel takes readers back forty years, telling a story that is part baseball history, part urban history, and part U.S. cultural history, the narrative weaving together the development of the Midwest cities of St. Louis and Milwaukee through their engagement with beer and baseball. As the National and American League champions squared off for the 1982 Fall Classic, the St. Louis Cardinals, owned by Anheuser-Busch, took on the Milwaukee Brewers, so named by owner Bud Selig in homage to the city’s baseball and brewing past. Even nominal baseball fans will enjoy reading about legendary players, teams, and personalities that emerged in the 1982 season: the year Ricky Henderson stole 130 bases; Reggie Jackson led the league in home runs; and Cal Ripken Jr. began his remarkable playing streak. Readers will also enjoy the cultural references, including the Pac-Man craze, a chart-topping album by Rush, and the “Light Beer Wars” waged by Anheuser-Busch and the Miller Brewing Company through a series of humorous TV commercials featuring well-loved professional sports figures.

Book excerpt: Most Brewers fans have enjoyed a beer and a brat at Miller Park, proudly sported a hat with the iconic ball-in-glove logo, and listened to Bob Uecker call a game. Names like Pete Yuckovich and Gorman Thomas are just as familiar as Robin Yount and Paul Molitor. But even the most die-hard fans don't know everything about their beloved Brewers. In 100 Things Brewers Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die, Tom Haudricourt has assembled the facts, traditions, and achievements sure to educate and entertain true fans. Do you know which player regularly stopped by tailgates before games? Which pitcher worked as a garbageman before joining the Brewers? And why was Uecker's first scouting report covered in mashed potatoes and gravy? All of the key figures and events are here: Bud Selig's purchase of the Seattle Pilots in 1970; Harvey's Wallbangers of the early 1980s; the 2011 NL Central title, and even the team's recent development under manager Craig Counsell.

A dick in Manhattan? You've got to be kidding me. Don't get me wrong. I respect she's got plenty of attitude. I especially hold her Uncle Vinny, a mob boss, in high esteem. Both he and her police-chief father explain how I should book my own funeral if I mess with her. Not much for authority, I thank them for their concern. However, she's mine and I plan on keeping her. When she goes missing, at first I figure she's miffed. Yeah, I may not always take her career as seriously as she'd like. But hey, didn't I help her solve the missing-cat-caper? That should count for something, right? When she doesn't answer my texts, I check with her family and my stupid heart stops. Where the hell is she? Suds and Sam will make you laugh and yet keep you turning one more page all night long. Grab your copy now. Note: Beware of healthy, passionate, panty-melting scenes. No cliffhangers. Book excerpt: From splitters to spitters; from a frozen rope to the suicide squeeze; from extra innings to no hitters, baseball is truly a great game. But nothing hypes up a crowd like a home run, a round tripper, a big bomb . . . the long ball! Hitting the ball out of the park is one of the greatest feats in baseball, and doing so in the clutch can make an average player a hero overnight. In Dingers, authors Joshua Shifrin and Tom Shea break down the 101 most memorable home runs in baseball history, telling their stories and how they affected the game of baseball. Whether it’s “The Shot Heard ’Round the World” or Hank Aaron’s 715th blast, readers will get an inside scoop on some of the most famous moments that now live in baseball lore. Whether you were there when Reggie Jackson hit three-straight home runs in Game 6 of the 1977 World Series, watched Joe Carter’s 1993 World Series-winning home run live, or have seen highlights from Bill Mazeroski’s memorable shot in Game 7 of the 1960 World Series, Dingers is for baseball fans young and old. Relive the moments you cherish to the ones you’ve only heard tales about. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Sports Publishing imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in sports—books about baseball, pro football, college football, pro and college basketball, hockey, or soccer, we have a book about your sport or your team. Book excerpt: The St. Louis Cardinals, despite winning more World Series than any Major League franchise except for the New York Yankees, have seen their share of dry spells when they were shut out of the postseason. Like the American economy, the Cardinals have seen their fortunes cycle through prolonged ups and downs, with booms in 1885-1888, 1926-1946, 1964-1968, 1982-1987 and 1996-2011, and busts in 1889-1925, 1947-1963, 1969-1981 and 1988-1995. Drawing on years of research, this book chronicles the Cardinals' periods of success and failure and explains the reasons behind them.

This book was released on 2019-12-11 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the context of heightened climate variability, thinking about ways to redesign our urban areas with more sustainable infrastructure solutions is becoming more and more important. Green infrastructure (GI) is emerging as an alternative approach to traditional (‘grey’) infrastructure in urban planning and development. Its emergence can be understood in terms of the growing demand for infrastructure and services, increased concerns over natural resource constraints and climate change, and the negative impacts associated with traditional approaches to designing and building cities. It has been proposed that GI can provide the same services as traditional infrastructure at a similar capital cost, while also providing a range of additional benefits. However, despite the increasing examples of successful urban GI applications, traditional infrastructure continues to dominate due to the lack of systematic evidence to support GI implementation. As a result, there has been an increase in calls from policy- and decision-makers for a greater evidence base on the benefits of GI, as well as for practical guidelines on its implementation. ‘Towards applying a green infrastructure approach in the Gauteng City-Region’ is the GCRO’s third report in its ongoing research into 'Green assets and infrastructure'. The first two reports in this project series were more theoretically grounded and policy-oriented, whereas this third report is more practical in nature. The first report explored the basic principles around GI, assessed the extent of ecological features in Gauteng and the way governments in the province think about planning and maintenance of green assets. The second report responded to some of the challenges identified in the first report, and in particular the importance of government officials and practitioners in exploring how international green infrastructure plans could be applied in the Gauteng context. This third report builds on the findings of the aforementioned reports and the project’s CityLab series, which highlighted the need to build an evidence base as critical for garnering support for and as well as enhancing investment in the GI approach. Unlike the more theoretically grounded earlier reports, this report comprises four technical sections and practical reflections on how a GI approach could be incorporated into urban planning in the GCR and in other similar urban contexts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Lou Brock was chasing 3000 career hits late in the 1979 season--his last after 18 years in the majors--the St. Louis Cardinals were looking for a new identity. Brock's departure represented the final link to the team's glory years of the 1960s, and a parade of new players now came in from the minor leagues. With the Cardinals mired in last place by the following June, owner August A. Busch, Jr., hired Whitey Herzog as field manager, and shortly handed him the general manager's position, too. Herzog was given free rein to rebuild the club in order to embrace the new running game trend in the majors. With an aggressive style of play and an unconventional approach to personnel moves, he catapulted the Cardinals back into prominence and defined a new age of baseball in St. Louis.
