In this sudokus main diagonals also contain the digits 1 through 9. About Book This book introduces you to the amazing world of Sudoku X puzzles. It will help you understand the rules of this puzzle. This book is perfect for players of all skill levels and ages. You will find 200 exciting puzzles, both for beginners and for professionals. HOW TO PLAY It is a 9x9 grid, partially divided by black cells into compartments. The puzzle is most frequently a 9x9 grid made up of 3x3 subgrids (called "regions"). Some cells already contain numbers, known as "givens". The goal is to fill in the empty cells, one number in each, so that each column, row, and region contains the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once. Main diagonals also contain the digits 1 through 9. Each number in the solution therefore occurs only once in each of three "directions".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sudoku craze keeps growing, with no end in sight--and as its popularity builds, fans keep an eagle eye out for fresh formats featuring their favorite puzzles. Here’s one sure to draw them in: sudokus that add a little spice to the mix by changing the standard 9 x 9 puzzles to 10 x 10. That means solvers get 100 squares to fill in instead of just 81! And the numbers go from zero to nine, rather than one to nine. Plus, the smaller sections within each grid are no longer 3 x 3: half the puzzles feature rectangular 5 x 2 boxes and the rest come in various random shapes, with heavy lines marking out the separate areas. It may seem daunting at first--but it’s fun!

Book excerpt: In his newspaper column, Human Matters, Steven Kalas answers readers' questions and adds his musings about life, love, family, ethics, sex, culture, art, philosophy, religion, celebration and suffering - from the most noble aspects of the human experience to its deepest, darkest secrets. He allows us to look through his unique and quirky lenses to see his view of the world. Reading Human Matters is like talking with a therapist, writer, philosopher, father, former priest, performing singer/songwriter, and an amateur stand-up comic. Kalas is all of those things. Infusing his writings on everything from sexuality to hockey violence, are the repeating themes of personal integrity, responsibility, loyalty, spiritual enlightenment, and just being the best you that you can be. Being human demands of us, that we act like human beings, and not lesser creatures. Or as Kalas wrote in a recent column, 'I can't prove that being human matters. But I've decided to live as if it does'.

Book excerpt: Bullies in Power is written from the heart with a down-to-earth style intended to move the reader along a path of life as experienced by a family dealing with the challenges of poverty and racially-motivated abusive authorities. This book conveys a powerful message that love, hope and determination provide the tools necessary to overcome lifes challenges. Not what I expected at all. When I began reading the manuscript I found it mesmerizing and had to read it all before putting it down. Ken Salter, BSW, RSW. Bullies in Power captivated me emotionally and spiritually. I couldnt help but admire the love and courage shared by this family Bernie Rothenburger, editor. There are many ways to tell a story but Bullies in Power reflects honesty at its most primitive level. There is no mistaking what the writer means. The facts are beyond contesting and so clearly presented that the reader feels the emotional content of the events described. Its as though the reader is living the experience.

Book excerpt: It is a common—and fundamental—misconception that Paul told people how to live. Apart from forbidding certain abusive practices, he never gives any precise instructions for living. It would have violated his two main social principles: human freedom and dignity, and the need for people to love one another. Paul was a Hellenistic Jew, originally named Saul, from the tribe of Benjamin, who made a living from tent making or leatherworking. He called himself the “Apostle to the Gentiles” and was the most important of the early Christian evangelists. Paul is not easy to understand. The Greeks and Romans themselves probably misunderstood him or skimmed the surface of his arguments when he used terms such as “law” (referring to the complex system of Jewish religious law in which he himself was trained). But they did share a language—Greek—and a cosmopolitan urban culture, that of the Roman Empire. Paul considered evangelizing the Greeks and Romans to be his special mission. “For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” The idea of love as the only rule was current among Jewish thinkers of his time, but the idea of freedom being available to anyone was revolutionary. Paul, regarded by Christians as the greatest interpreter of Jesus’ mission, was the first person to explain how Christ’s life and death fit into the larger scheme of salvation, from the creation of Adam to the end of time. Preaching spiritual equality and God’s infinite love, he crusaded for the Jewish Messiah to be accepted as the friend and deliverer of all humankind. In Paul Among the People, Sarah Ruden explores the meanings of his words and shows how they might have affected readers in his own time and culture. She describes as well how his writings represented the new church as an alternative to old ways of thinking, feeling, and living. Ruden translates passages from ancient Greek and Roman literature, from Aristophanes to Seneca, setting them beside famous and controversial passages of Paul and their key modern interpretations. She writes about Augustine; about George Bernard Shaw’s misguided notion of Paul as “the eternal enemy of Women”; and about the misuse of Paul in the English Puritan Richard Baxter’s strictures against “flesh-pleasing.” Ruden makes clear that Paul’s ethics, in contrast to later distortions, were humane, open, and responsible. Paul Among the People is a remarkable work of scholarship, synthesis, and understanding; a revelation of the founder of Christianity.

Solo was also the proprietor of his own typography shop in Oakland, California — an establishment dedicated to unusual typography and special effects. This comprehensive catalog offers graphic designers a dazzling selection of over 4,000 typefaces and optical effects available from Solotype Typographers. Here, in Solo's words, is "a great cast of characters" — the alphabet — abetted by a cornucopia of typographical ideas and an endless resource of letters, words, phrases, slogans, logos, humorous comments, headlines, and graphic symbols. Individual sections of the book display a rich variety of typefaces in categories such as Condensed, Victorian, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Rustic, Thick-and-tin, Calligraphic, Uncials, Latins, and Blackletter. Samples are imaginatively presented. "Stagecoach," for example, is printed in Fargo typeface, evoking dusty trails, rawhide, and ten-gallon hats, while "Sizzling summer savings" appears appropriately in the flamboyant Firebug typeface. All typefaces are indexed for quick and easy reference. As entertaining as it is practical and useful, this impressive treasury of versatile typefaces and optical effects will be indispensable to busy commercial artists as an inexhaustible source of typographic ideas and a "swipe file" of words, phrases, and letters for use in graphic art projects.

Book excerpt: We are now living in a world where Brexit and Trump are daily realities. But how did this come about? And what does it mean for the future? Populism and ultra-nationalism brought about the rise of Hitler and Mussolini in the 1930s. Now, as Trump sits in the White House, Britain negotiates its way out of the EU, and countries across Europe see substantial gains in support for the extreme Right, award-winning journalist, author, and historian Gwynne Dyer asks how we got here, and where we go next. Dyer examines the global challenges facing us all today and explains how they have contributed to a world of inequality, poverty, and joblessness, conditions which he argues inevitably lead to the rise of populism. The greatest threat to social and political stability, he argues, lies in the rise of automation, which will continue to eliminate jobs, whether politicians admit that it is happening or not. To avoid a social and political catastrophe, we will have to find ways of putting real money into the pockets of those who have no work. But this is not a book without hope. Our capacity for overcoming the worst has been tested again and again throughout history, and we have always survived. To do so now, Dyer argues, we must embrace radical solutions to the real difficulties facing individuals, or find ourselves back in the 1930s with no way out.
