Book Synopsis Latest Advances In Atomic Cluster Collisions: Structure And Dynamics From The Nuclear To The Biological Scale by : Jean-patrick Connerade
Download or read book Latest Advances In Atomic Cluster Collisions: Structure And Dynamics From The Nuclear To The Biological Scale written by Jean-patrick Connerade and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008-09-10 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a “snapshot” of the most recent and significant advances in the field of cluster physics. It is a comprehensive review based on contributions by the participants of the 2nd International Symposium on Atomic Cluster Collisions (ISACC 2007) held in July 19-23, 2007 at GSI, Darmstadt, Germany. The purpose of the Symposium is to promote the growth and exhange of scientific information on the structure and properties of nuclear, atomic, molecular, biological and complex cluster systems studied by means of photonic, electronic, heavy particle and atomic collisions. Particular attention is devoted to dynamic phenomena, many-body effects taking place in cluster systems of a different nature — these include problems of fusion and fission, fragmentation, collective electron excitations, phase transitions, etc. Both the experimental and theoretical aspects of cluster physics, uniquely placed between nuclear physics on the one hand and atomic, molecular and solid state physics on the other, are discussed./a
Book Synopsis Isotope Shifts in Atomic Spectra by : W.H. King
Download or read book Isotope Shifts in Atomic Spectra written by W.H. King and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atomic and nuclear physics are two flourishing but distinct branches of physics; the subject of isotope shifts in atomic spectra is one of the few that links these two branches. It is a subject that has been studied for well over fifty years, but interest in the subject, far from flagging, has been stimulated in recent years. Fast computers have enabled theoreticians to evaluate the properties of many-electron atoms, and laser spectroscopy has made it possible to measure isotope shifts in the previously unmeasurable areas of very rare isotopes, short-lived radioactive isotopes, weak transitions, and transitions involving high-lying atomic levels. Isotope shifts can now be measured with greater accuracy than before in both optical transitions and x-ray transitions of muonic atoms; this improved accuracy is revealing new facets of the subject. I am very grateful to Dr. H. G. Kuhn, F. R. S. , for having introduced me to the subject in the 1950s, and for supervising my efforts to measure isotope shifts in the spectrum of ruthenium. I thus approach the subject as an experimental atomic spectroscopist. This bias is obviously apparent in my use of the spectroscopist's notation of lower-upper for a transition, rather than the nuclear physicist's upper-lower. My reasons are given in Section 1. 3 and I hope that nuclear physicists will forgive me for using this notation even for muonic x-ray transitions.

This book was released on 2005-09-30 with total page 815 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises an important collection of papers dedicated to the problems of producing and investigating nuclei far from the line of stability. Together, they discuss the latest results on the production and study of the properties of the lightest to the heaviest nuclei as well as the current plans for future joint investigations in the field of exotic nuclei. The contributions from well-known experts in the field were presented at the International Symposium on Exotic Nuclei, jointly organized by four scientific centers where this field is actively pursued: Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions JINR (Dubna), RIKEN (Japan), GANIL (France), and GSI (Germany).Unique techniques for the synthesis and investigation of the properties of exotic nuclei are being developed together with the realization of large accelerator projects. The creation of these new radioactive ion beam factories requires substantial investment, and they can only be built with the support of international collaborations.
Book Synopsis Particle Emission From Nuclei by : Dorin N. Poenaru
Download or read book Particle Emission From Nuclei written by Dorin N. Poenaru and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has three volume. The first volume is mainly devoted to the macroscopic-microscopic theory in its traditional form and extended to very high mass and charge asymmetry. Applications of this theory to the emission of different kinds of charged particles from nuclei are presented in the second volume, where recent experimental achievements in alpha decay, proton, and heavy ion (14C, 24Ne, 28Mg, etc.) radioactivities are also discussed. Experiments on spontaneous fission, fission isomers, and more complex phenomena like particle-accompanied fission, delayed processes: p, a, 2p, t, n, 2n, 3n, and the new mechanism of cold fission (or fission with compact shapes) are described in detail in the third volume.

Book Synopsis Coarse-Grained Modeling of Biomolecules by : Garegin A. Papoian
Download or read book Coarse-Grained Modeling of Biomolecules written by Garegin A. Papoian and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The chapters in this book survey the progress in simulating biomolecular dynamics.... The images conjured up by this work are not yet universally loved, but are beginning to bring new insights into the study of biological structure and function. The future will decide whether this scientific movement can bring forth its Picasso or Modigliani." –from the Foreword by Peter G. Wolynes, Bullard-Welch Foundation Professor of Science, Rice University This book highlights the state-of-art in coarse-grained modeling of biomolecules, covering both fundamentals as well as various cutting edge applications. Coarse-graining of biomolecules is an area of rapid advances, with numerous new force fields having appeared recently and significant progress made in developing a systematic theory of coarse-graining. The contents start with first fundamental principles based on physics, then survey specific state-of-art coarse-grained force fields of proteins and nucleic acids, and provide examples of exciting biological problems that are at large scale, and hence, only amenable to coarse-grained modeling. Introduces coarse-grained models of proteins and nucleic acids. Showcases applications such as genome packaging in nuclei and understanding ribosome dynamics Gives the physical foundations of coarse-graining Demonstrates use of models for large-scale assemblies in modern studies Garegin A. Papoian is the first Monroe Martin Associate Professor with appointments in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the Institute for Physical Science and Technology at the University of Maryland.
