Book excerpt: -- Remarkable selection of objects that surpass the typical design associations of their day and enter into the realm of art -- First time most of these objects have been published -- Features 90 superb examples of jewelry, furniture and architecture with fascinating stories of their creation and provenance Throughout history, French artists, artisans and designers have created astonishingly beautiful decorative arts. Stuff of Dreams features 90 marvelous pieces that have surpassed all standards of tradition, craftsmanship and utility. Many of these objects possess a latent surrealistic element, linking the rich, the elegant, the elaborate, the curious and the sensuous. This publication accompanies an international exchange exhibition organized by the Portland Art Museum, which will travel to the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Connecticut, and then to the Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama before the artworks return to be permanently installed at the Paris Musee des Arts Decoratifs in 2003. Most of the works of art selected for this publication carry with them fascinating stories about their origins, their makers, and those persons who commissioned, collected, used or loved them.

Book excerpt: Most of the fairy tales that we grew up with we know thanks to the Brothers Grimm. Jack Zipes, one of our surest guides through the world of fairy tales and their criticism, takes behind the romantics mythology of the wandering brothers. Bringing to bear his own critical expertise, as well as new biographical information, Zipes examines the interaction between the Grimms' lives and their work. He reveals the Grimms' personal struggle to overcome social prejudice and poverty, as well as their political efforts - as scholars and civil servant - toward unifying the German states. By deftly interweaving the social, political, and personal elements of the lives of the Brothers Grimm, Zipes rescues them from sentimental obscurity. No longer figures in fairy tale, the Brothers Grimm emerge as powerful creators, real men who established the fairy tale as one of our great literary institutions. Part biography, part critical assessment, part social history, the Brothers Grimm provides a complex and very real story about fairy tales and the modern world.

Book excerpt: The Kennedy family was hated by Jewish leaders because Joseph Kennedy, Sr. admired Adolf Hitler. The decision to kill JFK was probably a group decision among several Jewish leaders. The decision makers likely included Nahum Goldmann, founder and president of the World Jewish Congress; and Jacob Kaplan, Grand Rabbi of France. J. Edgar Hoover?s FBI was the moving force behind the assassination. Using Jewish mobster Meyer Lansky as an emissary, the FBI recruited French Corsican heroin traffickers--the Guerini Family--to supply the assassins. As payment, the French Corsicans were allowed to return to Southeast Asia and re-establish their heroin trafficking enterprise. This required the removal of South Vietnamese Prime Minister Ngo Dinh Diem who was assassinated--in a CIA backed coup--three weeks before Kennedy was killed. French Corsican assassins were chosen to kill JFK because the FBI was created by a prominent French Corsican family, the Bonapartes. The Bureau was created in 1908 by Napoleon Bonaparte?s great-nephew, then attorney general Charles Joseph Bonaparte. Napoleon is considered a savior to Jews worldwide because he helped them resettle in Europe after living in exile for centuries. The French-Corsicans assassins were Lucien Sarti, Francois Chiappe, and Jean-Paul Angeletti.

Book excerpt: First Published in 1997. Happily Ever After is Jack Zipes's latest work on the fairy tale. Moving from the Renaissance to the present, and between different cultures this book addresses Zipes's ongoing concern with the fairy tale- its impact on children and adults, its role in the socialisation of children- as well as the future of the fairy tale on the big(and little) screen. Here are Straparola's sixteenth-century 'Puss in Boots' and a 1922 film of the story; Hansel and Gretel and child abuse; the Pinocchio of Colladi and of Walt Disney. AN ardent champion of children's literature and children's culture, Zipes writes also about oral tradition and the rise of storytelling throughout the world. But behind each of his essays lies the key question that all fairy tales will raise: what does it tale to bring about happiness? And is happiness only to be found in fairy tales?
