Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This might be news: success as a twenty-first century solicitor is not dependent on your technical aptitude alone. Sorry. As well as the basic requirements of understanding and applying the law superbly, you are also now expected to master a whole suite of so-called 'soft skills' -- communicating empathetically, acting commercially, writing carefully, presenting brilliantly, networking sensibly and building relationships enthusiastically. These skills might be called 'soft' by our industry, but the reality is that they are both incredibly hard and vitally important -- especially as a junior commercial lawyer keen to make a likeable, professional, commercial and lasting positive impression on those in control of your embryonic career. Written by a lawyer with unique experience as a commercial practitioner, trainer and law-firm voyeur, this no-nonsense 'how to' guide is an honest, punchy and modern look at all the skills you don't get taught at law school, yet are absolutely critical to achieving success from day one of your life as a twenty-first century solicitor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corelegal is an organised group of business professionals who all specialise in the legal sector in the UK. We have various skills and expertise between us and the reason for this book, was to share this collective knowledge with a wider audience. Corelegal first launched in 2009 and has ran various seminars for legal professionals (namely solicitors) in different cities in the UK as well as webinars with the purpose of imparting knowledge on each members key specialist subject. With new developments in the economy underway, there has been an increasing trend for more firms to start up, and existing ones to consolidate, so we decided to create a book which would help those who are already practising law, and perhaps who are thinking of starting their own law firm business, or who have been running a law firm for some time, and need to stay ahead and on top of their game. Between the writers there is collectively over 100 years experience in working with solicitors / lawyers. Using our first hand client experience (in case studies when mentioned - names have been changed to protect the innocent!), we have a valuable understanding of the legal industry, the changes that are underway and ideas that can help the savvy solicitor to come out on top. Different members have contributed a chapter or two. The book aims to bring fresh ideas and perspective, no matter if you are UK-based, or in the field of law in another part of the world. Note that we tend to use the term 'solicitors' a lot in the book, but for our purpose, we mean lawyers, attorneys, briefs, notaries and barristers too!The book is divided into four units – Finance, Operations, Marketing and Future thinking. You can skip to the part that interests you the most, or just read it from cover to cover. You may also be interested in visiting or subscribing to our YouTube channel, as snippets from previous seminars have been uploaded on there, as have webinar interviews with various members. We post articles regularly on our blog at www.Corelegal.net.

This latest edition has not only been restructured and updated, but extensively refocused, to provide a reliable analysis of the contemporary legal system in the sociopolitical uncertainty of a post-Brexit, post-Covid UK. It retains the key learning features of: useful chapter summaries which act as a good checkpoint for students; ‘food for thought’ questions at the end of each chapter to prompt critical thinking and reflection; sources for further reading and suggested websites at the end of each chapter to point students towards further learning pathways; and a fully updated online resource for students and instructors. Trusted by generations of academics and students, this authoritative textbook is a permanent fixture in this ever-evolving subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A frequently overlooked institution of American politics, the Office of the Solicitor General is responsible for all litigation before the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of the executive branch. In carrying out this task, the solicitor general is also an advisor to the justices and a gatekeeper, controlling a large portion of litigation that reaches the Court's docket. Rebecca Salokar studies this office and shows that, with the increased politicization of the Justice Department, the work of the nation's lawyer is an integral component of executive policy-making. Paying particular attention to the selection of solicitors general and the political and legal environment in which they functioned, Salokar analyzes all Supreme Court cases in which the government was a participant from 1959 through 1986. Her interviews with several former solicitors general and members of their staffs provide contextual examples to support the statistical analyses. She demonstrates that this office can and does shape policy questions for the United States. While the relationship between the judicial and executive branches has been defined traditionally through the nomination of justices to the Court, Salokar reveals that another, more frequently used, link between the two branches exists in the Office of the Solicitor General. Author note: Rebecca Mae Salokar is Associate Professor of Political Science at Florida International University.
