Book Synopsis Hong Kong Movers and Stayers by : Janet W. Salaff
Download or read book Hong Kong Movers and Stayers written by Janet W. Salaff and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2024-04-22 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Half a million Hong Kong residents fled their homeland during the thirteen years before Hong Kong's reversion to China in 1997. Nearly half of those returned within the next several years. Filled with detailed, first-hand stories of nine Hong Kong families over nearly two decades, Hong Kong Movers and Stayers is a multifaceted yet intimate look at the forces behind Hong Kong families' successful, and failed, efforts at migration and settlement. Defining migration as a process, not a single act of leaving, Hong Kong Movers and Stayers provides an antidote to ethnocentric and simplistic theories by uncovering migration stories as they relate to social structures and social capital. The authors meld survey analysis, personal biography, and sociology and compare multiple families in order to give voice to the interplay of gender, age, and diverse family roles as motivating factors in migration.
Download or read book Mall City written by Stefan Al and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hong Kong is the twenty-first-century paradigmatic capital of consumerism. Of all places, it has the densest and tallest concentration of malls, reaching tens of stories. Hong Kong’s malls are also the most visited, sandwiched between subways and skyscrapers. These mall complexes have become cities in and of themselves, accommodating tens of thousands of people who live, work, and play within a single structure. Mall City features Hong Kong as a unique rendering of an advanced consumer society. Retail space has come a long way since the nineteenth-century covered passages of Paris, which once awed the bourgeoisie with glass roofs and gaslights. It has morphed from the arcade to the department store, and from the mall into the “mall city”—where “expresscalators” crisscross mesmerizing atriums. Highlighting the effects of this development in Hong Kong, this book raises questions about architecture, city planning, culture, and urban life.
Book Synopsis Urban Design and Human Flourishing by : Tim G. Townshend
Download or read book Urban Design and Human Flourishing written by Tim G. Townshend and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The built environment influences health and well-being in a myriad of ways. Some neighbourhoods are plagued by busy roads that are a constant source of danger, noise, and air pollution. In some cities there is inadequate green space for children to play and socialise safely. Yet, this book argues, it does not have to be this way. With focus on human health, well-being, and flourishing, this book explores the ways in which people’s lives are impacted by the built environment and how we can create, adapt, and design healthy and inclusive places. The volume explores the relationship between urban design and human flourishing and initiates broad discussions around relevant questions such as ‘What is a healthy place?’, ‘What influences our perceptions of built environment more? Is it our age or our cultural background?’. The book includes six chapters from internationally renowned authors who attempt to unpack some of the key aspects that urban designers need to consider in order to create places that enable – rather than constrain – individuals and communities to live rich fulfilling lives. This book will be of great value to students, scholars, and researchers interested in urban design, planning, and in exploring how built environment impacts health and happiness. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Urban Design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like all good things, this book also has a purpose. Through these entrepreneurs, I intend to inspire a future generation of entrepreneurs. When those in this book tell you their life's journey, it gives you something that you can relate to. From their words, you will learn about the current market situation, future predictions, industrial analysis, technological innovations, ease of doing business, and so much more. I also designed this book to introduce you to some exceptional individuals who are disrupting conventional methods. Like I said in my previous book, gone are the days of a brick-and-mortar business. Now, I don't mean to say these age-old methods will not bring you any luck. But by not digitizing your business, you will miss out on so many opportunities. Everything you have learned till today is a thing of the past. Innovations that would have taken years before are now being fast-tracked to meet the needs of the ever-changing world. Sometimes entrepreneurs used to say that a particular product or service they introduced was too soon to be adopted by the people. Today's entrepreneurs will not say that. No matter what futuristic product you offer, there couldn't possibly be a better time to launch it.

Drawing on extensive internationally conducted research, from both industry and academia, the authors have written the essential PPP guide. Book Synopsis Innovative and Creative Industries in Hong Kong by : Grace L K Leung
Download or read book Innovative and Creative Industries in Hong Kong written by Grace L K Leung and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-29 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experience of Hong Kong’s innovative and creative industries and the challenges they face serves as an important case study for other Chinese and Asian cities that are actively developing their innovative and creative industries in the era of globalization. The return of sovereignty over Hong Kong back to China in 1997 has led to both collaboration and competition between the two places in innovative and creative sectors for the Greater China and Asian Regions. Hong Kong has remained unique in spite of the integration, but she has to strike a delicate balance between being simultaneously a Chinese and an international city. This book looks at different innovative and creative industries, such as international art and culture exhibition, innovative technology, digital entertainment, TV and movies, as well as government policy for innovative and creative industries, particularly the changing competitive landscape brought about by the latest Great Bay Area development. Drawing insights from cultural history, innovation economics, cultural policy studies, and cultural geography, this book explores the opportunities and challenges of Hong Kong's innovative and creative industries, in particular after the change of sovereignty in 1997. It demonstrates that the city’s legacy, and heavy government input in capital, do not guarantee their sustainable development. This is a book not only for policymakers or academics interested in innovative and creative industries but also to students contemplating a career in these areas in Hong Kong, the Greater China and the Asian Region.
Book Synopsis Shopping Malls and Public Space in Modern China by : Nicholas Jewell
Download or read book Shopping Malls and Public Space in Modern China written by Nicholas Jewell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s rise as an economic superpower has been inescapable. Statistical hyperbole has been accompanied by a plethora of highly publicized architectural forms that brand the regeneration of its increasingly globalized urban centres. Despite the sizeable body of literature that has accompanied China’s modernization, the essence and trajectory of its contemporary cityscape remains difficult to grasp. This volume addresses a less explored aspect of China’s urban rejuvenation - the prominence of the shopping mall as a keystone of its public spaces. Here, the presence of the built form most representative of Western capitalism’s excess is one that makes explicit the tensions between China’s Communist state and its ascent within the ’free’ market. This book examines how these interrelationships are manifested in the culturally hybrid built form of the shopping mall and its role in contesting the ’public’ space of the modern Chinese city. By viewing these interrelationships as collisions of global and local narratives, a more nuanced understanding of the shopping mall typology is explored. Much architectural criticism has failed to address the levels of meaning implicit within the shopping mall, yet it is a building type whose public popularity has guaranteed its endurance. Consequently, if architecture is to remain a relevant social art, a more holistic understanding of this phenomenon will be indispensable to the process of adapting to globalizing forces. This examination of Chinese shopping malls offers a timely and relevant case study of what is happening in all our cities today.

Download or read book The Emerging Public Realm of the Greater Bay Area written by Miodrag Mitrašinović and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-07-29 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through illustrated case studies and conceptual re-framings, this volume showcases ongoing transformations in public space, and its relationship to the public realm more broadly in the world’s most populous urban megaregion—the Greater Bay Area of southeastern China—projected to reach eighty million inhabitants by the year 2025. This book assembles diverse approaches to interrogating the forms of public space and the public realm that are emerging in the context of this region’s rapid urban development in the last forty years, bringing together authors from urbanism, architecture, planning, sociology, anthropology and politics to examine innovative ways of framing and conceptualizing public space in/of the Greater Bay Area. The blend of authors’ first-hand practical experiences has created a unique cross-disciplinary book that employs public space to frame issues of planning, political control, social inclusion, participation, learning/education and appropriation in the production of everyday urbanism. In the context of the Greater Bay Area, such spaces and practices also present opportunities for reconfiguring design-driven urban practice beyond traditional interventions manifested by the design of physical objects and public amenities to the design of new social protocols, processes, infrastructures and capabilities. This is a captivating new dimension of urbanism and critical urban practice and will be of interest to academics, students and practitioners interested in urbanization in China.
