Book excerpt: Excerpt from Successful Houses and How to Build Them An inherent desire seems to be born in every one to have a home of one's own, - to posses a little place, however small, - to be one's own lord and master. This desire is natural. It betokens a healthy mind, a worthy ambition, - a lofty ideal. There are many reasons why it is not to one's best interests to rent. Recall the most responsible men and women of any town and you will find they are the property owners. The man who does not own his home is looked upon by others as an underling or weakling. He is regarded in the eyes of his neighbors as lacking in initiative, in the eyes of his family he is considered unfortunate, in his own mind he realizes that he has never quite achieved success. Look about and see the men on small salaries who own their homes. They have toiled no harder than others, but rigid economy has made it possible to squeeze out a few dollars a month to apply to their house contract, and in after years they have something to show for the money expended. Why should we help to support our landlord? If a small amount of capital invested each month by those who have not the ready cash to pay for a house and lot will in the end provide a home, why not use these sums in that way instead of handling them to the landlord, enriching him at our own expense? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Successful Houses There are comparatively few people who at one time or another do not have to face the problem of household furniture and decoration, and who do not at such times experience a sensation of comparative helplessness. To assist them there have been published two classes of books only, one in which the information is of the most shocking character, utterly devoid of taste, judgment or good sense; the other in which the laws are of a learned and technical character, but difficult of application by private persons in their own homes. Many of the latter class of publications are great authority, and could their intent be thoroughly absorbed would lead to radical improvements in the popular ideal of household decoration; but unfor tunately, besides the ponderous text, the illustrations are usually chosen from views of palaces and other great houses, and convey no suggestions to the discouraged housewife with a few hundred dollars to expend at most. The author in this volume has attempted to take another course, to describe, without formulae, certain undeniable principles, to indicate their application, and to illustrate the result by giving pictures of the interiors of eminently good houses. Some of these are inexpensive, some compara tively costly, but all are the homes of private citizens without any especial pretense of great wealth. The author is indebted for this opportunity to the series of articles published in The House Beautiful, entitled Successful Houses, for which the owners have allowed these photographs to be taken. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Radford American Homes: 100 House Plans This book contains the perspective view and floor plans of 100 low and medium priced houses, and is a continuation of the work which was begun in The Radford Ideal Homes and which met with such phenomenal success all over the world. In this work, even greater care has been exercised in the selection of original, practical and attractive house designs, such as seventy-five to ninety percent, of the people to-day wish to build. In the drawing of these plans special effort has been made to provide for the most economical constructions, thereby giving the home builder and the contractor the benefit of the saving of many dollars; for in no case have we put any useless expense upon the building, simply to carry out some pet idea. Every plan illustrated will show by the complete working plans and specifications that we give you designs that will work out to the best advantage and will give you the most for your money; besides, every bit of space has been utilized to the best advantage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Home Building and Furnishing: Being a Combined New Edition of "Model Houses for Little Money" And "Inside of 100 Homes" In presenting in book form the accompanying designs of houses which have appeared from time to time in The Ladies' Home Journal, it is, perhaps, desirable that a word of explanation from me should accompany them. The articles were designed to be of aid in the building of small homes, the designing of which is too frequently left to builders or others ignorant of architecture as an art, and not always skilled in using to the best advan tage the space available. In their magazine publication the articles found an acceptance as testified by the fact that over 500 houses were built in one year from the plans given. It is hoped that in book form the plans may con tinne to prove of value to prospective house builders. Moreover, it is hoped that they may stimulate the demand for good plans, and so prove of benefit to architects at large; for, as has been urged in the articles, they are in no sense intended to take the place of the ser vices of a trained architect. Each house is a problem requiring the best skill of an expert, none more so than the small house which must be inexpensive, yet which is desired to be just as artistic as the largest. Viollet-le-duc, none perhaps will have greater in terest for the amateur or for the practical architect than the Histoire d'une Maison. Of all the architectural problems of the day there is not one of greater import ance or difficulty than that of building a house which shall fulfil the various needs and conditions of a modern dwelling; and the author has brought the results of a long course of study, Observation, and experience, to bear upon this problem in a most practically instructive and fascinating shape. A lively narrative introduces the reader to the minute and thorough discussion of every stage of the processes involved, so that his attention is agreeably relieved; and each step is illustrated by plates and diagrams, which render the details intelligible even to the least informed student. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Homes and How to Make the Best of Them As a pillar stands firm on the grave of the dead. - Homer. That is a fine image of stability, though in England a pillar is a cold symbol of commemorated success. It does not appeal to the family heart, being an emblem of public virtue, not a token of domesticity. An English poet would choose a word more intimate than pillar, either home or hall, but preferably hall, because the English home of to-day grew from that one room. In other words, the hall threw out offshoot chambers and storeys till at last good house - plans were formed, the evolution lasting over a span of so much time that its periods cannot be counted now. As the hall stands firm on the grave of the dead this, then, is a just figure of England's stability through the ages. In this matter past and present unite as true yoke-fellows with Time and that is why a book on modern houses Should give, as a necessary introduction, a brief account of what they and we owe to bygone generations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Architectural Review, Vol. 2: January, 1913 Successful houses, and How T o build them, by Charles E. White, Jr. 5 x 520 pages. 149 photographs. 39 plans. 216 drawings. Price, net. The Macmillan Company, New York, 1912. This book has a particular interest for the home builder or owner, as is indicated by the popular appeal of some of the chapter titles; while its great est value will be ih the large number of hints it contains as to such little considered but im portant details as garbage disposal, fireplace design, heating, electric lighting, etc. In the large number of illustrations, many prove to be of interesting and commendable houses, and many of the drawings are such as would be clear to an untrained reader. In general criti cism, the publishers have made a cumbersome volume by using an unnecessarily thick paper, which indeed does not show up the half-tone illustrations as well as might have been done on a thinner stock; but this does not necessa rily detract from its value to the home builder, and it should prove a popular book.
