This book was released on 2017-06-07 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is a book to buy, study and probably keep out of view of your office mates. Mr. German has openly shared his formula for getting ahead in any architecture firm, large or small. Immerse yourself in fascinating tales of inner office machinations. Read about the successes and failures of a professional driven to make himself and his firm an undeniable center of creativity, competitiveness and profitability. The use of clear and simple language is a pleasant surprise coming from a pragmatic and successful practitioner of almost 40 years. Recommended for all levels, interns to proprietors--designers, managers, and those in the trenches." Written for architects who want to succeed in this difficult profession, it is organized to parallel the progression of a mainstream career, from the first job interview just out of college all the way to senior management and/or ownership. Most of the advice is based on my 40+ years of experience in the field, culminating as managing principal of McCleary-German Architects, based in Houston. Virtually everything that helped my career came from either a notable success, or as you might expect, from failures along the way (and there were a few!). Some of my opinions are outside the mainstream, so I invite you to take away only what is most helpful for you. The key to prosperity is recognition of your own strong points and building upon them. I have tried to include the necessary information to direct your plan and realize your goals--to help you select the critical areas in which to invest your time and resources. Much of my advice applies to most all career professionals. Consider this an operations manual. It is definitely NOT a "how to win design awards" book. Even the most successful architect can't or won't be the best at everything recommended. Some of the most successful architects are brilliant leaders and have partners and a supporting cast of design and document specialists. This is for certain: if you want to move up in your firm--and help your firm succeed--make some time to be at least conversant with every single topic in this book. Architecture as a profession certainly gave me most everything a person could want. In a way, this book traces the story of my career. It is my hope you will benefit from my insights during your own journey. Mr. German practiced architecture for 35 years in Texas. Recently retired, he shares insights that brought him success in the profession. Marketing, sales and customer relations are covered in detail, along with advice for interacting with clients and co-workers, both as manager and employee. With experience in large and small firms, and with a myriad variety of clientele, Mr. German includes not only stories of success, but also lessons learned from missteps along the way. He is both award-winning and respected for his no-nonsense approach to running a company.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The groundbreaking guide to modern leadership in architectural practice Leading Collaborative Architectural Practice is the leadership handbook for today's design and construction professionals. Endorsed by the American Institute of Architects, this book describes the collaborative approach to leadership that is becoming increasingly prevalent in modern practice; gone are the days of authoritative "star" architects— today's practice is a brand, and requires the full input of every member of the team. This book builds off of a two-year AIA research project to provide a blueprint for effective leadership: the ability, awareness, and commitment to lead project teams who work together to accomplish the project's goals. Both group and individual hands-on exercises help facilitate implementation, and extensive case studies show how these techniques have helped real-world firms build exemplary success through collaborative teamwork and leadership. Highly illustrated and accessible, this approach is presented from the practicing architect's point of view—but the universal principles and time-tested methods also provide clear guidance for owners, contractors, engineers, project managers, and students. Build a culture of collaboration, commitment, and interpersonal awareness Adopt effective leadership techniques at the team, project, or practice level Handle conflict and resolve communication issues using tested approaches Learn how real-world projects use effective leadership to drive success The last decade has seen a sea-change in architectural leadership. New practices no longer adopt the name and identity of a single person, but create their own identity that represents the collaborative work of the entire group. Shifts in technology and changing workplace norms have made top-down management structures irrelevant, so what does it now mean to lead? Forefront presents effective contemporary leadership in the architectural practice, and real-world guidance on everyday implementation.

Designing a World Class Architecture Firm: The People, Stories and Strategies Behind HOK tells the history of one of the largest design firms in the world and draws lessons from it that can help other architects, interior designers, urban planners and creative services professionals grow bigger or better. Former HOK CEO Patrick MacLeamy shares the revolutionary strategies HOK’s founders deployed to create a brand-new type of architecture firm. He pulls no punches, revealing the triple crisis that almost bankrupted HOK and describes how any firm can survive and thrive. Designing a World Class Architecture Firm tells the inside story of many of HOK’s most iconic buildings, including the National Air and Space Museum, Moscone Convention Center, Oriole Park at Camden Yards, the Houston Galleria and the reimagined LaGuardia Airport. Each chapter conveys lessons learned from HOK’s successes —and failures— including: The importance of diversifying to depression-and-recession-proof your firm The benefit of organizing your firm around specialized leaders and project types The difference between leading and managing your people The value of simple financial metrics to ensure your firm’s health and profitability The “run toward trouble” strategy which prevents problems from ballooning MacLeamy delivers his advice via inspirational stories such as how HOK survived when its home office in St. Louis went up in flames and humorous stories, like the time an HOK executive was mistaken for royalty on a trip to Saudi Arabia. In this tell-all guide, the driven architecture or design professional will find the tools needed to evolve or grow any firm.

Zweig According to Mark Zweig, a successful author and management consultant to top design firms, human resources management offers more opportunity to improve firms’ productivity and performance than any other area of professional practice. In this book, Zweig describes in a practical, how-to format the basics of HRM for architects, landscape architects, interior designers, and other design professionals. The book proceeds logically from the hiring process, orientation, and career development to important information on performance appraisals, compensation, and law. Also included are useful forms from leading design firms—all current—and several key case studies. 1991 (0 471-63374-7) 320 pp. Building Construction Inspection A Guide for Architects Jay Bannister Construction inspection is a vital function in the construction process—as vital as the design itself. While most inspection is just good common sense, there are aspects that call for special expertise. This is a practical guide to site inspection for architects and other building professionals that reflects the author’s 27 years of hands-on personal experience. It is organized following the general sequence of construction, and includes a series of detailed checklists called "memory joggers" to help the reader review the various stages of on-site construction. The book also covers the various relationships and practical aspects of being on the job site, and consistently reminds the reader to refer to the drawings and specifications. Includes over 40 drawings and 60 on-site photographs. 1991 (0 471-53004-2) 320 pp. Practice Management for Design Professionals A Practical Guide to Avoiding Liability and Enhancing Profitability John Philip Bachner Based on the experiences of the Associated Soil and Foundations Engineers, this book discusses the methods civil engineers, architects, builders, contractors, and other professionals can use to lower liability insurance rates. The ASFE—formed to control the insurance rates of geotechnical engineers which were the highest among design professionals—created and disseminated a series of programs and other information that lowered their members’ insurance rates in less than 20 years to the lowest in the design industry. The book details and demonstrates how to apply these methods to other design professions. 1991 (0 471-52205-8) 400 pp.
