Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The working papers in Subsystems of American Society document conceptual developments based on Parsons' famous four-function paradigm. The included chapters analyze the American economy, polity, and societal community. They represent Parsons' first attempt to apply the four-function paradigm to the understanding of a complex modern society with highly differentiated institutional structures. As such, they clarify important developments in 20th century sociological theory as well as underscoring Parsons' insightful understanding of American society.
Book Synopsis American Society by : Talcott Parsons
Download or read book American Society written by Talcott Parsons and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Never before published, American Society is the product of Talcott Parsons' last major theoretical project. Completed just a few weeks before his death, this is Parsons' promised 'general book on American society'. It offers a systematic presentation and revision of Parson's landmark theoretical positions on modernity and the possibility of objective sociological knowledge. Even after the passage of many years, American Society imparts a remarkably provocative interpretation of US society and a creative approach to social theory.
Book Synopsis Values of American Society by : Talcott Parsons
Download or read book Values of American Society written by Talcott Parsons and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2016 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The material in Values of American Society remains the principal resource for understanding Parsons' conception of value systems. His treatment of value systems has been much debated, although poorly understood, in considerable part because Parsons never published his full conception, developed only in these manuscripts. They continue to hold interest for social scientists, both for their carefully developed analytical scheme and for the resulting discussion of American culture and society. Book Synopsis Defining the American System by : Andrea Bellovary
Download or read book Defining the American System written by Andrea Bellovary and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American systems are commonly discussed in system justification literature; however, little is known about what subsystems are important to Americans' understanding of the overall American system and what impact status has on forming these perceptions. This study attempts to answer these questions by asking Americans about their perceptions of the overall American system and seven underlying subsystems (political, economic, employment, education, criminal justice, social services, and health care). Three hundred and forty three community members from the Chicagoland area and Mechanical Turk were recruited to participate in the survey. It was hypothesized that high-status participants would prioritize the subsystems that they justify while low-status participants would prioritize the subsystems they do not justify in their understanding of the overall American system. Status, measured by income, did not significantly predict this relationship. It was further hypothesized that justification of subsystems and income would each have a positive relationship with justification of the overall American system. Justification of subsystems was found to be a significant predictor of justification of the American system; however, status did not predict American system justification. Finally, an exploratory cluster analysis revealed three distinct clusters which indicated different ways participants conceptualized the American system. This analysis makes the first steps towards understanding how various subsystems within the American system are conceptualized and perceived by people of different statuses. Future directions for this research are discussed.

Book Synopsis Addressing Modernity by : Hannes Bergthaller
Download or read book Addressing Modernity written by Hannes Bergthaller and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2011 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Niklas Luhmann’s theory of social systems is one of the most ambitious attempts to create a coherent account of global modernity. Primarily interested in the fundamental structures of modern society, however, Luhmann himself paid relatively little attention to regional variations. The aim of this book is to seek out modernity in one particular location: The United States of America. Gathering essays from a group of cultural and literary scholars, sociologists, and philosophers, Addressing Modernity reassesses the claims of American exceptionalism by setting them in the context of Luhmann’s conception of modernity, and explores how social systems theory can generate new perspectives on what has often been described as the first thoroughly modern nation. As a study of American society and culture from a Luhmannian vantage point, the book is of interest to scholars from both American Studies and social systems theory in general.

Book excerpt: This book presents distinctive perspectives and voices concerning the nature, utility, and limitations of science and technology in national security, as well as outlining the nature of science and technology’s interdependency with military operations. These dialogues are particularly timely during this period of transition for the US military in which these implicit ideas are molding the Army Futures Command and similar other service agencies. The design decisions being made to equip, train, educate, deploy, and lead the future force need wisdom from experienced scientists, engineers, and innovators. This book addresses fundamental issues such as the relationship between scientific advances and technological innovation and the roles of science and technology in a modern society and the military.
