Presently fielded systems like pulsed electromagnetic induction systems and cesium-vapor magnetometers are able to distinguish between UXO and other metallic ground clutter only with difficulty. The discovery of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) has led to the development of a new generation of integrated-circuit magnetic sensors that are far more sensitive than previously available room-temperature-operation electronic devices. The small size of GMR sensors makes possible the construction of array detectors that can be used to image the flux emanating from a ferrous object or from a non-ferrous object with eddy currents imposed by an external coil. The purpose of a GMR-based imaging detector would be to allow the operator to easily distinguish between UXO and benign objects (like shrapnel or spent bullets) that litter formerly used defense sites (FUDS). In order to demonstrate the potential of a GMR-based imaging technology, a crude magnetic imaging system has been constructed using commercially available sensors. The ability to roughly determine the outline and disposition of magnetic objects has been demonstrated. Improvements to the system which are necessary to make it into a high-performance UXO detector are outlined.

The EMI response of a metallic object can be accurately modeled by a sum of real decaying exponentials. However, it is difficult to obtain the model parameters from measurements when the number of exponentials in the sum is unknown or the terms are strongly correlated. Traditionally, the relaxation constants are estimated by nonlinear iterative search that often leads to unsatisfactory results.\r : \r : An effective EMI modeling technique is developed by first linearizing the problem through enumeration and then solving the linearized model using a sparsity-regularized minimization.\r : This approach overcomes several long-standing challenges in EMI signal modeling, including finding the unknown model order as well as handling the ill-posed nature of the problem. The resulting algorithm does not require a good initial guess to converge to a satisfactory solution.\r : \r : This new modeling technique is extended to incorporate multiple measurements in a single parameter estimation step. More accurate estimates are obtained by exploiting an invariance property of the EMI response, which states that the relaxation frequencies do not change for different locations and orientations of a metallic object. Using tests on synthetic data and laboratory measurement of known targets, the proposed multiple-measurement method is shown to provide accurate and stable estimates of the model parameters. The ability to estimate the relaxation constants of targets enables more robust subsurface target discrimination using the relaxations. A simple relaxation-based subsurface target detection algorithm is developed to demonstrate the potential of the estimated relaxations.

Book excerpt: The response of geological materials at the scale of meters and the response of buried targets of different shapes and sizes using controlled-source electromagnetic induction (CSEM) is investigated. This dissertation focuses on three topics; i) frac- tal properties on electric conductivity data from near-surface geology and processing techniques for enhancing man-made target responses, ii) non-linear inversion of spa- tiotemporal data using continuation method, and iii) classification of CSEM transient and spatiotemporal data. In the first topic, apparent conductivity profiles and maps were studied to de- termine self-affine properties of the geological noise and the effects of man-made con- ductive metal targets. 2-D Fourier transform and omnidirectional variograms showed that variations in apparent conductivity exhibit self-affinity, corresponding to frac- tional Brownian motion. Self-affinity no longer holds when targets are buried in the near-surface, making feasible the use of spectral methods to determine their pres- ence. The difference between the geology and target responses can be exploited using wavelet decomposition. A series of experiments showed that wavelet filtering is able to separate target responses from the geological background. In the second topic, a continuation-based inversion method approach is adopted, based on path-tracking in model space, to solve the non-linear least squares prob- lem for unexploded ordnance (UXO) data. The model corresponds to a stretched- exponential decay of eddy currents induced in a magnetic spheroid. The fast inversion of actual field multi-receiver CSEM responses of inert, buried ordnance is also shown. Software based on the continuation method could be installed within a multi-receiver CSEM sensor and used for near-real-time UXO decision. In the third topic, unsupervised self-organizing maps (SOM) were adapted for data clustering and classification. The use of self-organizing maps (SOM) for central- loop CSEM transients shows potential capability to perform classification, discrimi- nating background and non-dangerous items (clutter) data from, for instance, unex- ploded ordnance. Implementation of a merge SOM algorithm showed that clustering and classification of spatiotemporal CSEM data is possible. The ability to extract tar- get signals from a background-contaminated pattern is desired to avoid dealing with forward models containing subsurface response or to implement processing algorithm to remove, to some degree, the effects of background response and the target-host interactions.

Several approaches to the computational problems associated with predicting and interpreting electromagnetic phenomena in and around the earth are addressed herein. Publications resulting from the project include [31]. To obtain accurate and physically meaningful numerical simulations of natural phenomena, computational algorithms should operate in discrete settings that reflect the structure of governing mathematical models. In section 2, the extension of algebraic multigrid methods for the time domain eddy current equations to the frequency domain problem is discussed. Software was developed and is available in Trilinos ML package. In section 3 we consider finite element approximations of De Rham's complex. We describe how to develop a family of finite element spaces that forms an exact sequence on hexahedral grids. The ensuing family of non-affine finite elements is called a van Welij complex, after the work [37] of van Welij who first proposed a general method for developing tangentially and normally continuous vector fields on hexahedral elements. The use of this complex is illustrated for the eddy current equations and a conservation law problem. Software was developed and is available in the Ptenos finite element package. The more popular methods of geophysical inversion seek solutions to an unconstrained optimization problem by imposing stabilizing constraints in the form of smoothing operators on some enormous set of model parameters (i.e. ''over-parametrize and regularize''). In contrast we investigate an alternative approach whereby sharp jumps in material properties are preserved in the solution by choosing as model parameters a modest set of variables which describe an interface between adjacent regions in physical space. While still over-parametrized, this choice of model space contains far fewer parameters than before, thus easing the computational burden, in some cases, of the optimization problem. And most importantly, the associated finite element discretization is aligned with the abrupt changes in material properties associated with lithologic boundaries as well as the interface between buried cultural artifacts and the surrounding Earth. In section 4, algorithms and tools are described that associate a smooth interface surface to a given triangulation. In particular, the tools support surface refinement and coarsening. Section 5 describes some preliminary results on the application of interface identification methods to some model problems in geophysical inversion. Due to time constraints, the results described here use the GNU Triangulated Surface Library for the manipulation of surface meshes and the TetGen software library for the generation of tetrahedral meshes.

Book excerpt: An improved capability for subsurface structure detection is needed to support military and nonproliferation requirements for inspection and for surveillance of activities of threatening nations. As part of the DOE/NN-20 program to apply geophysical methods to detect and characterize underground facilities, Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) initiated an electromagnetic induction (EMI) project to evaluate low frequency electromagnetic (EM) techniques for subsurface structure detection. Low frequency, in this case, extended from kilohertz to hundreds of kilohertz. An EMI survey procedure had already been developed for borehole imaging of coal seams and had successfully been applied in a surface mode to detect a drug smuggling tunnel. The SNL project has focused on building upon the success of that procedure and applying it to surface and low altitude airborne platforms. Part of SNL's work has focused on improving that technology through improved hardware and data processing. The improved hardware development has been performed utilizing Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) funding. In addition, SNL's effort focused on: (1) improvements in modeling of the basic geophysics of the illuminating electromagnetic field and its coupling to the underground target (partially funded using LDRD funds) and (2) development of techniques for phase-based and multi-frequency processing and spatial processing to support subsurface target detection and characterization. The products of this project are: (1) an evaluation of an improved EM gradiometer, (2) an improved gradiometer concept for possible future development, (3) an improved modeling capability, (4) demonstration of an EM wave migration method for target recognition, and a demonstration that the technology is capable of detecting targets to depths exceeding 25 meters.

Book excerpt: Remediation of unexploded ordnance (UXO) and prioritization of excavation procedures for archaeological artifacts using electromagnetic (EM) induction are studied in this dissertation. Lowering of the false alarm rates that require excavation and artifact excavation prioritization can reduce the costs associated with unnecessary procedures. Data were taken over 5 areas at the San Jacinto Battleground near Houston, Texas, using an EM-63 metal detection instrument. The areas were selected using the archaeological concepts of cultural and natural formation processes applied to what is thought to be areas that were involved in the 1836 Battle of San Jacinto. Innovative use of a Statistical Point Pattern Analysis (PPA) is employed to identify clustering of EM anomalies. The K-function uses point {x, y} data to look for possible clusters in relation to other points in the data set. The clusters once identified using K-function will be further examined for classification and prioritization using the Weighted K-function. The Weighted K-function uses a third variable such as millivolt values or time decay to aid in segregation and prioritization of anomalies present. Once the anomalies of interest are identified, their locations are determined using the Gi-Statistics Technique. The Gi*-Statistic uses the individual Cartesian{x, y} points as origin locations to establish a range of distances to other cluster points in the data set. The segregation and location of anomalies supplied by this analysis will have several benefits. Prioritization of excavations will narrow down what areas should be excavated first. Anomalies of interest can be located to guide excavation procedures within the areas surveyed. Knowing what anomalies are of greater importance than others will help to lower false alarm rates for UXO remediation or for archaeological artifact selection. Knowing significant anomaly location will reduce the number of excavations which will subsequently save time and money. The procedures and analyses presented here are an interdisciplinary compilation of geophysics, archaeology and statistical analysis brought together for the first time to examine problems associated with UXO remediation as well as archaeological artifact selection at historic battlegrounds using electromagnetic data.

This project was a component of the Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) Detection, Identification, and Remediation Advanced Technology Demonstration (ATD) program. Work under the UXO-ATD program began as a result of the new U.S. Government emphasis on Department of Defense reductions and consolidations, the need to close and clean up military bases and ranges, and return them to the public. The PEMI was one of several projects performed under the UXO-ATD program in support of sensor development to increase the reliability, accuracy, and cost effectiveness of the methods used for UXO detection, identification, and characterization. The PEMI project included several phases of work: modelling and simulation, assembling data collection hardware, performing a field experiment in March and April 1995 in Washington state, and performing a second field demonstration at the Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technology Division magnetometer test range in Indian Head, Maryland in July 1995. The results of the project indicate that the PEMI method will be useful in UXO remediation efforts. Additional work is required to develop a field prototype that will be able to detect, localize, charactenze, and identify UXO.

Radio remote sensing can be seen as three generic steps: measurement, processing, and interpretation. In this thesis, we discuss methods to address the latter components of radio remote sensing as they pertain to electromagnetic subsurface imaging. We describe a signal processing technique, known as sparse separation, that allows us to decompose the observed data into components that are of scientific value and those that are considered interference. We formulate electromagnetic subsurface imaging as an optimization problem constrained by a set of partial differential equations (PDEs), specifically Maxwell's equations, which govern electromagnetic wave propagation. Algorithms for approximating the solution to these optimization problems are presented and tested numerically. We image conductivities underground with natural sources of electromagnetic radio waves. In the VLF (Very Low Frequency, 3-30kHz) band there are many types of naturally occurring electromagnetic waves. We are primarily interested in a class of electromagnetic waves known as radio atmospherics, or sferics for short. Sferics are short-duration, broadband radio bursts produced by lightning discharges worldwide. Sferics provide three basic advantages for electromagnetic subsurface imaging. First sferics are plentiful; lightning occurs at a rate of 45 discharges per second. Second, because of the global distribution of lightning discharges, we are able to observe sferics incident from multiple different directions of arrival. Each independent incident direction provides more information about the subsurface conductivities. Third, sferics are broadband in nature. Each sferic contains information at multiple frequencies, further augmenting the information we have collected about the subsurface area of interest. The techniques developed in this thesis are designed to take advantage of these three basic properties. To better understand the data, we introduce and develop the technique of sparse separation in an overcomplete dictionary. By solving for a sparse, higher dimensional representation of our data we are able to partition the data into components that are scientifically valuable and components that are considered interference. We develop methods based on soft thresholding, the proximal operator for the sparsity promoting l1 bound. These first order methods scale well, thus permitting the processing of large datasets. Electromagnetic subsurface imaging is formulated as a nonlinear, non-convex, PDE-constrained optimization problem. Using the finite difference frequency domain (FDFD) method for modeling Maxwell's equations on a discrete grid, we can predict the electromagnetic fields everywhere within a computational domain for any wave illumination and any set of scattering conductivities underground. The goal of electromagnetic subsurface imaging is to find an optimal set of conductivities within our model of Maxwell's equations that predict electromagnetic fields that closely match a set of electromagnetic field observations. Many techniques exist for approximating the solution to non-convex optimization problems including sequential linear approximation, alternating projections, and semidefinite relaxations and embeddings. Adaptations of the alternating directions method of multipliers (ADMM) to this non-convex problem have shown the best performance for obtaining the best accuracy and incorporating the multiple frequency and multiple direction of arrival information from sferics in a distributed and scalable manner. Development of these algorithms leads to computational experiments to discover the real-world performance bounds. Adding more information to the problem increases estimation accuracy of subsurface conductivities. We investigate performance as a function of background conductivity and sensor noise. Varying these parameters allows us to predict the influence of basic physics principles and test the algorithms in a variety of possible real-world scenarios. Furthermore, we explore the relationship between the number of sensor measurements necessary and the accuracy we can obtain for determining the subsurface conductivity parameters. Numerical testing leads to a subsampling principle which gives a relationship between accuracy and the number of radio observations.
