Book excerpt: "Expansive soils present significant engineering challenges, with annual costs associated with repairing structures constructed over expansive soils estimated to run into several billion dollars. Volume changes in expansive soil deposits induced by fluctuations in the moisture content can result in severe damage to overlying structures. A flexible pavement section near the Western Border of Idaho has experienced recurrent damage due to volume changes in the underlying expansive soil layer; traditional stabilization methods have provided partial success over the years. The main objective of this research effort was to characterize the problematic soil layer contributing to the recurrent pavement damage and propose suitable rehabilitation alternatives. An extensive laboratory test matrix was carried out to characterize soil samples collected from underneath the problematic pavement section. Laboratory tests showed that the problematic expansive soil deposit was often at depths greater than 6 ft. (183 cm) from the pavement surface. Potential Vertical Rise (PVR) values calculated for ten boreholes strategically placed along the problematic pavement section closely matched with the surface roughness profile observed in the field. Liquidity Index (LI) calculations indicated that the active-zone extended to a depth of least 11 ft. (335 cm) from the pavement surface, and therefore, most of the heaving likely originates from soil layers as deep as 11 ft. (335 cm) from the pavement surface. Clay mineralogy tests indicated the presence of high amounts of Montmorillonite that can lead to significant volume changes. Moreover, high sulfate contents were detected in soil samples obtained from several of the boreholes, indicating a potential for sulfate-induced heaving upon chemical stabilization using calcium-based stabilizers. Based on findings from the laboratory testing, it was concluded that chemical stabilization or shallow treatment alternatives are not likely to be successful in mitigating the recurrent differential heave problems. A mechanical stabilization approach using geocells was proposed as a likely rehabilitation alternative for this pavement section. By dissipating the heave-induced stresses over a wider area, this reinforcement configuration was hypothesized to significantly reduce the differential heave. Finite-element models of the pavement section comprising six alternative geocell-reinforced configurations were prepared using the commercially available package, ABAQUS. Moisture swelling and suction properties for the expansive soil deposit were established in the laboratory and were used in the numerical model to simulate the swelling behavior. Results from the numerical modeling effort established that placing two layers of geocell within the unbound granular base layer led to the highest reduction (~60%) in the differential heave. Placing a single layer of geocell, on the other hand, reduced the differential heave magnitude by approximately 50%. Inadequate support conditions under the surface can lead to excessive pavement deformations, often leading to structural and functional failure. This research effort focused on assessing the effects of base/subbase and subgrade layer conditions on flexible pavement behavior. The results of this study are presented in the form of two journal manuscripts. The first manuscript focuses on utilizing pavement structural and functional evaluation data in making pavement rehabilitation decisions. Visual distress surveys and Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) testing are often carried out by agencies as a part of their pavement preservation programs. Although back-calculation of individual layer moduli from FWD data is a common approach to assess the pavement's structural condition, the accuracy of this approach is largely dependent on exact estimates of individual layer thicknesses. Considering the lack of pavement layer thickness information for all locations, this study used Deflection Basin Parameters (DBPs) calculated from FWD test data to make inferences regarding the structural condition of individual pavement layers in conventional flexible pavements. The adequacy of DBPs to assess the structural condition of individual pavement layers was assessed through Finite-Element (FE) Modeling. Subsequently, four selected pavement sections in the state of Idaho were analyzed based on this method to recommend suitable rehabilitation strategies. The second manuscript focused on studying how improvements to subsurface layers can affect the flexible pavement behavior over expansive soil deposits. A recently completed research study at Boise State University investigated a particular section of US-95 near the Idaho-Oregon border that has experienced significant differential heave due to expansive soils. Laboratory characterization of soil samples indicated the presence of highly expansive soils up to depths of 7.6 m (26 ft.) from the pavement surface. Through subsequent numerical modeling efforts, a hybrid geosynthetic system comprising geocells and geogrids was recommended for implementation during pavement reconstruction. This research effort focused on evaluating the suitability of polyurethane grout injection as a potential remedial measure for this pavement section. Laboratory testing of unbound materials treated with a High-Density Polyurethane (HDP) demonstrated that resilient modulus and shear strength properties could be improved significantly. Finite Element modeling of the problematic US-95 pavement section indicated that depending on the treated layer thickness, the differential heave magnitude can be reduced significantly, presenting polyurethane injection as a potential nondestructive remedial measure. ."--Boise State University ScholarWorks.

The objective of the program was to evaluate the performance of pavements incorporating new or timely design concepts and to assess the feasibility of these concepts for further use. Among the major findings of the study are: 1. A resilient select borrow material used over a resilient subgrade does not enhance pavement performance. When used between a cement stabilized subgrade and a crushed stone base, the resilient select material may, in fact, impair performance. There is some evidence that resiliency is reduced after a substantial number of wheel loads, with an improvement in subsequent pavement performance. 2. Pavements having cement treated crushed stone under a thin (3 in.) bituminous structure have performed very poorly. 3. Transverse shrinkage cracks reflect from a cement treated stone subbase through 3 inches of bituminous concrete in as little as 18 months, and through 7 inches in less than 5 years. 4. Where cement stabilized stone subbases are used and when truck traffic is normally channeled into the outer lanes, advantage may be taken of the omission of the stabilization from stone subbases under inner or passing lanes. 5. Shrinkage cracking aside, 4 inches of cement treated aggregate base, 4 inches of bituminous concrete, and 6 inches of untreated crushed stone base (all underlying 7 inches of bituminous concrete) give approximately equal performance after 5 years under heavy traffic conditions. Higher deflections and greater cracking on the pavement incorporating the untreated stone suggest that the performance may not be equal after many load applications.

Book excerpt: Fine-grained lateritic soils, which are typically found in tropical regions and have been used successfully in low-cost pavements, are often considered inadequate for the base and subbase pavement layers when the material selection is based on the California bearing ratio (CBR). When analyzed in repeated load triaxial (RLT) test equipment, which is the most frequently used device to analyze the mechanical behavior of unbound pavement materials, fine-grained lateritic soils exhibit low levels of plastic deformation. Thus, to allow more appropriate analyses of the mechanical behavior of such soils compared to traditional CBR-based analyses, resilient modulus and permanent deformation tests using RLT test equipment were performed. Then, multifactorial regression analysis of the experimental results was performed to identify the parameters of the material models that are implemented in the Brazilian mechanistic-empirical pavement design software program, MEDINA. The experimental program included material characterization in accordance with the so-called miniature, compacted, tropical (MCT) methodology that is tailored specifically to classify tropical soils. For one of the lateritic soils, two key parameters, i.e., the stress level and compaction moisture content, were varied in the RLT permanent deformation tests. An additional numerical analysis using MEDINA was conducted to evaluate the structural characteristics of flexible pavements composed of the four lateritic soils analyzed in this study. In general, the results obtained from this study indicate that lateritic soils can potentially be used as base and subbase layers in flexible pavement structures.

Book excerpt: The objectives of this study were to determine how to incorporate the increase in stiffness of stabilized subgrade in the design of (Flexible?) pavement, and to examine the longevity of subgrade stabilization. Pavement sites that included stabilized subgrade across the state of Ohio were selected for field measurements. The field work included measurements made with portable seismic properties analyzer (PSPA), falling weight deflectometer (FWD), core collection, and dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP) at multiple locations at each site. Original construction records, soil logs, and soil classification data were consulted as well. The FWD and DCP data were used to determine the resilient moduli and layer coefficients of aggregate base and stabilized subgrade and the resilient modulus of the unstabilized subgrade. Several methods of data analysis were used, including back calculation using finite element modeling from the FWD data and estimation of modulus from the DCP data and soil classification using procedures given in the 1993 AASHTO Guide for Design of Pavement Structures, ODOT's Pavement Design Manual, and a report for ODOT written by Eddie Chou [2004]. As borne out by FWD and DCP measurements, both cement stabilization and lime stabilization resulted in significant long term increases in the modulus of the stabilized subgrade relative to the unstabilized subgrade. The modulus and stiffness of the base is also increased because it is confined by the stabilized soil underneath and the pavement on top. The significant increase in the modulus of the base and stabilized subgrade has an impact on the thickness design of pavement.
