Book Synopsis Raw Materials Substitution Sustainability by : Elza Bontempi
Download or read book Raw Materials Substitution Sustainability written by Elza Bontempi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-07-27 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to propose a simplified quantitative approach to evaluating raw materials’ substitution sustainability, which takes into account their embodied energy and CO2 footprint. In addition to the new quantitative model, it also presents qualitative concepts as well as a number of case studies, and includes helpful illustrations to explain the concept and approach. Europe has launched several initiatives to promote research and innovation in raw materials and to find candidates for natural resources substitution. However, while there is a tremendous interest in raw material substitution, the lack of a simplified approach to comparing the materials’ sustainability and effective legal frameworks make final market applications extremely challenging. The market for new raw materials can only be established if industrial sectors are appropriately sensitized and stimulated. Addressing these and other issues, the book offers a valuable resource not only for scientists, researchers, and politicians, but also for industrial and business operators looking for a way to evaluate raw materials’ substitution sustainability.

Book Synopsis Material Substitution by : John E. Tilton
Download or read book Material Substitution written by John E. Tilton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-09-25 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Substitution has long been a common remedy for materials shortages. This study, originally published in 1983, uses tin to examine how and why substitution takes place. To provide insights into the tin industry and the practice of substitution, the case studies in this title examine three tin-using industries—beverage containers, solder, and tin chemical stabilisers. Overall, the contributors to this volume raise fundamental questions concerning the techniques for both short- and long-term forecasts of materials requirements in the industrial sector. This title will be of particular interest to students of Environmental Science.

Book Synopsis Engineering Materials 1 by : David R.H. Jones
Download or read book Engineering Materials 1 written by David R.H. Jones and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2018-11-30 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely adopted around the world, Engineering Materials 1 is a core materials science and engineering text for third- and fourth-year undergraduate students; it provides a broad introduction to the mechanical and environmental properties of materials used in a wide range of engineering applications. The text is deliberately concise, with each chapter designed to cover the content of one lecture. As in previous editions, chapters are arranged in groups dealing with particular classes of properties, each group covering property definitions, measurement, underlying principles, and materials selection techniques. Every group concludes with a chapter of case studies that demonstrate practical engineering problems involving materials. The 5th edition boasts expanded properties coverage, new case studies, more exercises and examples, and all-around improved pedagogy. Engineering Materials 1, Fifth Edition is perfect as a stand-alone text for a one-semester course in engineering materials or a first text with its companion Engineering Materials 2: An Introduction to Microstructures and Processing, in a two-semester course or sequence. - New chapters on magnetic, optical, thermal and electrical properties, with appropriate case studies of applications - Improved pedagogy, featuring more relevant photographs, new glossary of terms, additional worked examples, plus 50% more exercises than in previous edition, now graded according to difficulty - Improved discussion of supply and demand in Chapter 2 - Discussion at various points throughout the book of how nanomaterials can differ from larger-scale materials in their properties - New case studies on medical materials/biomaterials

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the landfill tax and the introduction of a tax on the use of primary aggregates, increasing financial pressure is now being exerted on highway engineers to provide the most economic alternatives to naturally-occurring roadmaking materials. Alternative materials in road construction: Second edition, provides practical guidance in the selection of substitute materials, including the economic and technical considerations of their use and advice on the benefits and pitfalls of each material. This fully revised second edition includes: Extensively re-written and updated sections on classification and sources Specifications of road making materials and environmental and economic considerations Enlarged sections on construction and demolition wastes to take account of the increasing concern at the depletion of natural resources and the much greater emphasis on recycling A new chapter on Government and EC Policy with respect to environmental damage and recycling Alternative materials in road construction: Second edition is divided into three parts. Part 1 discusses the demand and requirements of road making materials and the specifications that they have to meet if they are to give sa
