Book Synopsis Swapping Fossil Fuel Subsidies for Sustainable Energy by : Richard Bridle
Download or read book Swapping Fossil Fuel Subsidies for Sustainable Energy written by Richard Bridle and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Underpricing of fossil fuels, caused by subsidies, drives carbon intensive consumption. Reforming fossil fuel subsidies and allocating some of the savings to sustainable energy could accelerate a transition to fairer, safer, cleaner and more sustainable energy systems. This report outlines the Nordic Council of Ministers’ work to promote these swaps through the development of a business model and description of the link between fossil fuel subsidies, reforms and carbon emissions. The report evaluates potential swaps to increase industrial energy efficiency in the mining sector, in the context of energy sector reforms in Zambia; and the replacement of butane subsidies with solar investments in Morocco. The report also presents an outline of how Nordic countries are supporting reforms and driving the swaps agenda as part of Nordic Solutions to Global Challenges.
Book Synopsis Making the Switch by : Merrill, Laura
Download or read book Making the Switch written by Merrill, Laura and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2017-05-10 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report estimates fossil fuel subsidies to be around USD 425 billion. Such subsidies represent large lost opportunities for governments to invest in renewable energy, energy efficiency and sustainable development. Removal of consumer subsidies can lead to carbon emission reductions (6 to 8 per cent by 2050 globally), Reductions that can be improved further with a switch or a "SWAP" towards sustainable energy. This report describes the scale and impact of fossil fuel subsidies on sustainable development. It describes the SWAP concept to switch savings made from fossil fuel subsidy reform, towards sustainable energy, energy efficiency and safety nets. The report provides potential SWAP outlines for Bangladesh, Indonesia, Morocco and Zambia. "Making the Switch" was written for the Nordic Council Ministers by the Global Subsidies Initiative of IISD and Gaia Consulting.

Book Synopsis Climate And Development by : Anil Markandya
Download or read book Climate And Development written by Anil Markandya and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2015 Paris Accord stated the aim to limit the increase in global mean temperatures to 2ºC compared to pre-industrial levels and if possible, keep it down to 1.5ºC. Achieving this is possible, but the costs incurred are uncertain and the distribution of costs among nations is indistinct. Furthermore, even if the goal is realised, significant impacts from climate change can be expected. Evidence indicates that these will be felt most severely in countries that are relatively poor. These effects of climate change will be added to by the measures taken to reduce GHGs. Together, they will determine how climate change affects the prospects for development across the globe. The analysis of the interplay between climate change and policies to combat it on the one hand and development on the other are the focus of this book.

Book Synopsis Debt/Equity Swaps by : International Monetary Fund
Download or read book Debt/Equity Swaps written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes the development of debt/equity swaps in the years following the emergence of the international debt crisis. It discusses some of the possible advantages and disadvantages offered by such swaps to three groups of participants--the commercial banks, the investing companies, and the indebted countries. It also provides an analysis of how these swaps are treated in the balance of payments accounts of an indebted country and discusses their possible effects on that country’s money supply, foreign exchange rate and economic growth. The paper concludes that debt/equity swaps can help to make a country’s debt burden more manageable and can contribute to economic growth, but only to a limited extent.

Book Synopsis Financial Deregulation and Integration in East Asia by : Takatoshi Ito
Download or read book Financial Deregulation and Integration in East Asia written by Takatoshi Ito and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increased mobility and volume of international capital flows is a striking trend in international finance. While countries worldwide have engaged in financial deregulation, nowhere is this pattern more pronounced than in East Asia, where it has affected in unanticipated ways the behavior of exchange rates, interest rates, and capital flows. In these thirteen essays, American and Asian scholars analyze the effects of financial deregulation and integration on East Asian markets. Topics covered include the roles of the United States and Japan in trading with Asian countries, macroeconomic policy implications of export-led growth in Korea and Taiwan, the effects of foreign direct investment in China, and the impact of financial liberalization in Japan, Korea, and Singapore. Demonstrating the complexity of financial deregulation and the challenges it poses for policy makers, this volume provides an excellent picture of the overall status of East Asian financial markets for scholars in international finance and Asian economic development.

Book Synopsis Financing Clean Energy Access in Sub-Saharan Africa by : Bruno Michoud
Download or read book Financing Clean Energy Access in Sub-Saharan Africa written by Bruno Michoud and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-15 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book analyses barriers and challenges associated with the financing of clean energy access in sub-Saharan Africa. By considering various economic, financial, political, environmental and social factors, it explores the consequences of energy poverty across the region and maps the real and perceived investment risks for potential capital providers, both domestic and international. Furthermore, it analyses risk mitigation strategies and innovative financing structures available to the public and private sectors, which are aimed at leveraging capital in the clean energy sector at scale and fostering the creation of an enabling business and investment environment. More specifically, the present book analyses how to (i) enhance capital allocation in projects and organisations that foster clean energy access in the region, (ii) mobilize private capital at scale and (iii) decrease the cost of financing through risk mitigation strategies. Going beyond traditional approaches, the book also considers socioeconomic and cultural aspects associated with investment barriers across the subcontinent. Moreover, it urges the public and private spheres to become more actively involved in tackling this pressing development issue, and provides policy recommendations for the public sector, including proposals for business model evolution at multilateral agencies and development institutions. It will appeal to a wide readership of both academics and professionals working in the energy industry, the financial sector and the political sphere, as well as to general readers interested in the ongoing debate about energy, sustainable development and finance.

Download or read book Oil to Cash written by Todd Moss and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2015-06-10 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What should a country do if it suddenly discovers oil and gas? How should it spend the subsequent cash windfall? How can it protect against corruption? How can citizens truly benefit from national wealth? With many of the world's poorest and most fragile states suddenly joining the ranks of oil and gas producers, these are pressing policy questions. Oil to Cash explores one option that may help avoid the so-called resource curse: just give the money directly to citizens. A universal, transparent, and regular cash transfer would not only provide a concrete benefit to regular people, but would also create powerful incentives for citizens to hold their government accountable. Oil to Cash details how and where this idea could work and how policymakers can learn from the experiences with cash transfers in places like Mexico, Mongolia, and Alaska.
