Book Synopsis The EU Digital Services Act by : Folkert Wilman
Download or read book The EU Digital Services Act written by Folkert Wilman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-08-01 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The EU Regulation on a Single Market for Digital Services (Digital Services Act, the 'DSA') is a comprehensive legal framework to regulate digital services and to tackle illegal activity online across the European Union. The DSA represents one of the main pillars of the EU's reform of the digital single market. It applies horizontally to online intermediaries operating in the EU, including online platforms such as social media, video-sharing platforms, online marketplaces, and search engines. The EU Digital Services Act: A Commentary serves as a reference work on the DSA, written by experts who have been closely involved in all steps of the law-making process, from the preparation of the proposal to the final negotiations, as well as its subsequent elaboration and application. This commentary provides a comprehensive article-by-article analysis that will allow the reader to navigate the provisions of this new, complex legal act. While being novel, the DSA does not enter a completely unchartered territory: numerous provisions draw inspiration from, or are applied together with, the provisions of other Acts and areas of EU law. This Commentary explores the jurisprudential origins of the provisions of the DSA and their articulation with other EU Acts, which will be essential for its interpretation and application. With a foreword by Maciej Szpunar, the First Advocate General at the EU Court of Justice, The EU Digital Services Act: A Commentary strikes a balance between a practical commentary and an academic analysis, and is aimed at legal practitioners, academics, and public authorities.

Book Synopsis A European Central Bank Standing Guard over a European Currency Union by : Jan Meyers
Download or read book A European Central Bank Standing Guard over a European Currency Union written by Jan Meyers and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2024-04-26 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this year of the euro’s 25th anniversary, the book revisits the architecture of the European currency union as it continues to evolve and faces today’s concurrent challenges posed by its members’ high and diverging government debt levels, debt sustainability concerns, and the considerable public expenditures, investments and reforms needed in particular to address climate change and the green transition. Key components reviewed include the single monetary policy for the eurozone; the common rules and processes for keeping a measure of discipline and orderliness in the members’ economic and budgetary policies; the containment of financial fragmentation within the eurozone; and stability support for members under financial stress. The book focuses on the central role of the European Central Bank (ECB) and considers such issues as: how the ECB has defined its monetary policy mandate and calibrated its actions within the matrix of broadly worded objectives and constraints set by the EU Treaties; the possible tensions and trade-offs between the ECB’s primary mission of inflation control and the episodic need to avert risks to financial stability, contain financial fragmentation and preserve the cohesion of the European currency union; the difficulties of a single monetary policy interacting with the relative heterogeneity of economic characteristics and national fiscal policies across the eurozone; the ECB’s possible role in supporting the transition to a lower-carbon economy; and how judicial review by the European Court of Justice has to contend with the complexities and inherent uncertainties of monetary analysis and the ECB’s need of a broad margin of policy judgment. As part of the EU’s incomplete economic and monetary union, the currency union remains a work in progress. The challenges and choices at hand present serious legal questions that cannot be viewed in isolation from the economic and political issues—a kind of 3D combination puzzle to be solved.

Book Synopsis United States Code by : United States
Download or read book United States Code written by United States and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 1146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The United States Code is the official codification of the general and permanent laws of the United States of America. The Code was first published in 1926, and a new edition of the code has been published every six years since 1934. The 2012 edition of the Code incorporates laws enacted through the One Hundred Twelfth Congress, Second Session, the last of which was signed by the President on January 15, 2013. It does not include laws of the One Hundred Thirteenth Congress, First Session, enacted between January 2, 2013, the date it convened, and January 15, 2013. By statutory authority this edition may be cited "U.S.C. 2012 ed." As adopted in 1926, the Code established prima facie the general and permanent laws of the United States. The underlying statutes reprinted in the Code remained in effect and controlled over the Code in case of any discrepancy. In 1947, Congress began enacting individual titles of the Code into positive law. When a title is enacted into positive law, the underlying statutes are repealed and the title then becomes legal evidence of the law. Currently, 26 of the 51 titles in the Code have been so enacted. These are identified in the table of titles near the beginning of each volume. The Law Revision Counsel of the House of Representatives continues to prepare legislation pursuant to 2 U.S.C. 285b to enact the remainder of the Code, on a title-by-title basis, into positive law. The 2012 edition of the Code was prepared and published under the supervision of Ralph V. Seep, Law Revision Counsel. Grateful acknowledgment is made of the contributions by all who helped in this work, particularly the staffs of the Office of the Law Revision Counsel and the Government Printing Office"--Preface.

Download or read book The Race to Zero written by Paul H. Tice and published by Encounter Books. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Paul Tice delivers a body-blow to the predations of the ESG-industrial-complex." —Mark P. Mills, Senior Fellow, Manhattan Institute Over the past few years, sustainable investing—which is based on the theory that subjective environmental, social and governance or ESG factors should drive corporate policy and investment decisions—has swept across Wall Street, spurred on by the United Nations, sovereign governments and financial regulators and cheered on by academics, environmental activists, social justice warriors and the media. To date, there has been little public resistance or analytical pushback as the ESG orthodoxy has integrated itself into almost every corner of the financial markets. By 2030, the iron curtain of sustainability will have fully descended across Wall Street. Race to Zero is meant to provide a detailed rebuttal to the case for sustainable investing from the perspective of a long-time Wall Street analyst and investor and latter-day finance professor. Sustainable investing is a scam because it is not about generating excess returns for investors or furthering ethical goals such as improving society or saving the planet; rather, it is about controlling the world’s financial system and determining the allocation of capital and investment flows across the markets. It is liberal progressive politics masquerading as finance whose objective is to create a compliant corporate sector that serves as both Greek chorus and funding source for the environmental and social causes championed by government and the elite class. This book is designed to expose this truth in plain-spoken language—free of financial jargon—to reach the widest possible audience, including the silent majority on Wall Street now afraid to speak up about ESG.
Book Synopsis The Singularity Is Nearer by : Ray Kurzweil
Download or read book The Singularity Is Nearer written by Ray Kurzweil and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2024-06-25 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The noted inventor and futurist’s successor to his landmark book The Singularity Is Near explores how technology will transform the human race in the decades to come Since it was first published in 2005, Ray Kurzweil’s The Singularity Is Near and its vision of an exponential future have spawned a worldwide movement. Kurzweil's predictions about technological advancements have largely come true, with concepts like AI, intelligent machines, and biotechnology now widely familiar to the public. In this entirely new book Ray Kurzweil brings a fresh perspective to advances toward the Singularity—assessing his 1999 prediction that AI will reach human level intelligence by 2029 and examining the exponential growth of technology—that, in the near future, will expand human intelligence a millionfold and change human life forever. Among the topics he discusses are rebuilding the world, atom by atom with devices like nanobots; radical life extension beyond the current age limit of 120; reinventing intelligence by connecting our brains to the cloud; how exponential technologies are propelling innovation forward in all industries and improving all aspects of our well-being such as declining poverty and violence; and the growth of renewable energy and 3-D printing. He also considers the potential perils of biotechnology, nanotechnology, and artificial intelligence, including such topics of current controversy as how AI will impact employment and the safety of autonomous cars, and "After Life" technology, which aims to virtually revive deceased individuals through a combination of their data and DNA. The culmination of six decades of research on artificial intelligence, The Singularity Is Nearer is Ray Kurzweil’s crowning contribution to the story of this science and the revolution that is to come.

Download or read book Getting Education Right written by Frederick M. Hess and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Getting Education Right, Rick Hess and Mike McShane argue that America has too long suffered from the absence of a robust, coherent, and principled conservative vision for educational improvement. The book both diagnoses a problem and offers a solution. The problem? The right has too narrowly focused on school choice, campus speech, and shrinking Washington’s footprint, while the left has sought to subsidize and supersize the status quo. The solution? An education system imbued with shared values, respectful of family ties, and equipped for the challenges of the 21st century. Rooted in fundamental conservative principles, the book explains both how we got here and where we need to go when it comes to early childhood, K–12, and higher education. Eschewing performative polemics, this book offers a field guide to bringing education back to its formative mission. Readers from across the ideological spectrum will benefit from engaging with the provocative analysis Hess and McShane offer, whether or not they agree with the policies they propose. Education is the foundation on which America’s future will be constructed, and Getting Education Right provides a timely blueprint for that project. Book Features: A conservative vision for the direction of American education in early childhood, K–12, and higher education.A stimulating and informative presentation for audiences across the ideological spectrum. An explanation of what it means to be a conservative in education today applied to a series of crucial questions about American schooling.A readable and accessible text with plenty of anecdotes, provocative data points, and real-world solutions. Authors who are especially well-suited to this task given their prominence as influential conservative scholars and pundits.
