Book Synopsis Why Should Britain Tremble? A Submariner's Tale by : Chas Cooke
Download or read book Why Should Britain Tremble? A Submariner's Tale written by Chas Cooke and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-07-21 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The men of the Royal Navy Submarine Service are a breed apart. Often classified as slightly mad they work beneath the waves enclosed in a steel tube, in probably the most dangerous environment in the world. They are a mystery to many, including friends and family. This hilarious and often ribald book lays bare the the often bizarre antics of the crews of Her Majesty's submarines both at sea and ashore. It proves the psychiatrists wrong, submariners are not slightly mad, they are totally insane. This wonderfully funny book gives the reader an insight into the life of those who serve their nation from beneath the waves as well as telling of the toll the lifestyle takes on family life and the loved ones of those who are away, often for months on end, with no contact with home. Chas Cooke served in submarines of the Royal Navy for thirteen years and tells of the odd and often outrageous behaviour of those with whom he shared his life beneath the sea.

Download or read book The Submariner's Dictionary Or Submariner's Compendium of Terms & Tar's Handbook of Naval Verbiage and Retired Guy's Re-familiarization Manual written by Ron Martini and published by Ron Martini. This book was released on 2005 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Submariners are a tight knit group of men bound together by training and experience, and with a language all their own. That language is perhaps a little vulgar, but never intentionally demeaning, and a little irreverent but still worldly. This work is an attempt to preserve and explain some of these curious guys who so proudly wear a shiny metal pin that looks like a strange pair of fish on their left breast. This process of accumulating this new language begins in Boot Camp, and is added to with every change of duty station the sailor undergoes. It is heard aboard the boats and, unknowingly, by family members who can't understand terms like head, deck, and overhead, and who think SOS is a distress signal.

Günther Prien is a young German officer stationed on a cruise ship, and Eola Pinder is little more than putty in his hands. Their encounter leads to the birth of a son, Thomas Luther, who is destined for a life of adventure as he desperately seeks the love of a father throughout some of the worst events Key West and the world have ever seen. Tom's life shapes up to be one adventure after another. He experiences an unlikely rescue as his room goes up in flames around his crib flames that may have been started by the man Tom believes is his father. He's held hostage during a bank robbery and is nearly swept overboard from the deck of a freighter off Cape Hattaras during a major hurricane. Finally, in the midst of World War II, he finds himself carried away in a German submarine in the hands of the enemy by a man who turns out to be his father. In this rich historical novel, an unlikely cast of characters struggles to find the strength to survive not only some of the most horrible tragedies in Florida's history, but some of the most difficult lessons individuals can learn in a lifetime.

Book Synopsis Tales of a Cold War Submariner by : Dan Summitt
Download or read book Tales of a Cold War Submariner written by Dan Summitt and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2004-08-24 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the Second World War, Dan Summitt cruised the China Sea in a destroyer. During the Cold War, he worked with Adm. Hyman Rickover and commanded two nuclear submarines. In Tales of a Cold War Submariner, Summitt tells the dramatic story of his military life on and under the sea, focusing on his experiences with nuclear submarines and Admiral Rickover, “the father of the nuclear navy.” His stories, anecdotes, and detailed descriptions bring this tense era to life for the reader. Summitt recounts his service as commander of the USS Seadragon on its secret mission to the North Pole, where he rendezvoused with the USS Skate to conduct experiments under the ice. Following a posting to Naval Reactors, Summit then took command of the USS Alexander Hamilton, one of forty-one Polaris submarines in the U.S. fleet. A submarine of this class was 425 feet long and carried sixteen Polaris missiles, each 35 feet high and weighing 35,000 pounds. Summitt takes the reader on a tour of the spacious vessel, describing everything from its living quarters to practice missile launches to the coveralls worn by the crew. He recounts Christmas at the Duke of Argyle’s castle, discusses the difficulties of steering with a single propeller, and describes how the Alexander Hamilton was almost lost because of a faulty needle piston in the snorkel head valve cylinder, a reminder that even the most sophisticated machine can be undone by a simple mechanical failure. In the best tradition of naval literature, Summitt’s memoir offers a first-person view of life in the navy during a crucial period in our history. Readers will enjoy weighing anchor with Captain Summitt, and scholars will find his memoir an important contribution to the literature on the U.S. Navy and the Cold War.
