They have caused major damage to naval forces, slowed or stopped naval actions and commercial shipping, and forced the alteration of strategic and tactical plans. The threat posed by sea mines continues, and is increasing, in today's world of inexpensive advanced electronics, nanotechnology, and multiple potential enemies, some of which are difficult to identify. This report assesses the Department of the Navy's capabilities for conducting naval mining and countermining sea operations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental information is important for successful planning and execution of naval operations. A thorough understanding of environmental variability greatly increases the likelihood of mission success. To ensure that naval forces have the most up-to-date capabilities, the Office of Naval Research (ONR) has an extensive environmental research program. This research, to be of greatest use to the warfighter, needs to be directed towards assisting and solving battlefield problems. To increase research community understanding of the operational demands placed on naval operators and to facilitate discussion between these two groups, the National Research Council's (NRC) Ocean Studies Board (OSB), working with ONR and the Office of the Oceanographer of the Navy, convened five previous symposia on tactical oceanography. Oceanography and Mine Warfare examines the following issues: (1) how environmental data are used in current mine warfare doctrine, (2) current procedures for in situ collection of data, (3) the present capabilities of the Navy's oceanographic community to provide supporting information for mine warfare operations, and (4) the ability of oceanographic research and technology developments to enhance current mine warfare capabilities. This report primarily concentrates on the importance of oceanographic data for mine countermeasures.

The author, a former Royal Engineers officer, goes into great technical detail on the specifics of mine casings, the quantities of explosives used, electrical mines, and even the personnel best employed to operate the weaponry. The text is well-illustrated by diagrams, plans and maps as well as tables of explosive formulae etc. A must have book for all who are interested in the early development of mine and submarine warfare.

Book excerpt: This volume is devoted to the history and use by the United States of one of the Navy's least spectacular and most effective weapons. The effectiveness of the submarine mine has not decreased with the coming of the space age. So long as cargo ships cross the sea, this unspectacular weapon will remain a major factor in control of the approaches to harbors, and the shallow straits between seas. Robert Duncan has devoted most of his adult life to the generation and augmentation of competence in the application of growing science to the design, production, and use of mines for the U.S. Navy. He joined the staff of the Naval Ordnance Laboratory before it was known by that name, but in time to capitalize on the experience of the Navy with mines in World War I. He provided the technical leadership which was an important factor in keeping the art and science of mining alive in the Navy in the days of the depression. By so doing, he provided a basis for a hundredfold expansion of the Navy's effort previous to and during World War II. The hundreds of technical people who had the privilege of joining in this effort under Dr. Duncan's leadership will be happy to see this accurate and factual record of achievement. The experience recorded between these covers will serve as a guide to those still engaged in the development of this type of weapon, and the achievements made during World War II will be an inspiration to any who might be responsible for again expanding our national effort in mining, should the occasion arise. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1914 edition. Excerpt: ... INTRODUCTION THE SUBMARINE PHASE OF THE NAVAL WAR In the mist of war which envelops over half the entire world, no less than 264 underwater fighting ships are engaged. They form the submarine fleets of England, France, Russia, Japan, Germany and Austria; and the highly-trained crews of these modern additions to the fighting navies comprise nearly 20,000 men. But the conduct of submarine warfare on the grand scale requires far more than flotillas of submergible warships and their daring crews. This new branch of naval science is ever widening in its scope, its means of offence, and in its attendant ramifications. Every important naval base has its curious submarine floating docks, ready for crippled members of its attached flotilla; every naval construction department has its corps of submarine experts; each of the 1,500 surface warships engaged in this titanic struggle for the dominion of Europe and the mastery of the seas carries the means for delivering submarine attacks in its torpedoes and surface and submerged discharging "tubes. The oceans in the theatres of war have been strewn with German and Austrian mines; then they have been either counter-mined or swept clear and mined again. British seaplanes, with specially trained observers, are continually searching from high in the air for the dark patches in the semitransparent sea-green which denote the presence of mines and submarines. Within signal-range or wireless call of the aerial scouts and their attendant ships are destroyer flotillas to give battle to the hostile submarines, while hundreds of trawlers and small steamers, fitted with special apparatus, are continually sweeping up the hundreds of submarine mines laid by the enemy's vessels which are fitted to enable them to sow...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Submarines, Mines and Torpedoes in the War Warfare has become so largely a matter of science that in order to arrive at an intelligent understanding of the naval situation or of the military campaigns in the Great European War, a knowledge of the scientific factors contributing to victory or defeat is essential. And in this volume it has been my aim not only to review the actual fighting underseas, but also to present a compendium of information relative to the submarine fleets and arms of the great Naval Powers engaged; which I venture to hope will prove of present interest on account of the prominent part played by the underwater fighting ships and appliances, and of permanent historic value as being the first work to describe the vast preparations and curious events leading to the new "Submarine Phase" in naval warfare. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about modern torpedo technology and naval mine design. It is written by an expert in underwater weapon systems. The author has spent many years designing torpedoes in all their aspects from homing to dynamics and control engineering, as well as torpedo proximity fuzes. He has also designed all types of naval mines. The author initially discusses the nature of underwater explosions and the detailed designing of torpedo electromagnetic (EM) proximity fuzes based on it. The topic of EM proximity fuzes, considered a complex subject, is treated in an easy-to-understand manner. The topic is well explained with examples. Torpedo homing is then discussed in substantial detail as well as wake homing. The author discusses basic sonar theory for the uninitiated. He then discusses the evolution of torpedo homing and concludes with a cursory examination of the homing head of a contemporary torpedo.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Submarine Mines and Torpedoes: As Applied to Harbour Defence Many other authorities have been quoted and are duly acknowledged in the text. My own inventions connected with submarine mining are perhaps noticed too prominently, but it was necessary to illustrate the various and necessary contrivances by some special patterns, and it not unfrequently occurred that I was compelled to describe my own patterns or none at all, the Government gear being treated as secret and confidential. For a similar reason, it being impossible to indicate the defects of our service arrangements with precision, I have been compelled to attack their intricacy in general terms only. On matters connected with the personnel and the purchase of stores, however, it has been possible to go into detail; and if some of the remarks appear to be harsh, my excuse must be that the subjects required it. Minced language is not a desirable form of expression when the writer believes that the efficiency of an important item in National Defence is at stake.
