Book excerpt: Innovative microscopic techniques, introduced during the last two decades, have contributed much to creating a new picture of the dynamic architecture of the cell, which can now be more exactly correlated with specific biochemical and physiopathological events. These developments have led to significant advances in our understanding of the physiomorphological and pathological aspects of the secretory mechanism, as well as the pharmacologic methods used to control, experimentally, the function of exocrine and endocrine glands. The integration of new ultrastructural methods such as freeze-fracture/etching, immunocytochemistry, scanning and high-voltage electron microscopy, cytoautoradiography, etc. , has proven to be of great value when applied to the study of endocrine cells and tissues. Because information on this topic has appeared in a variety of scientific and medical journals, this book: (1) reviews the results of an integrative approach presenting a comprehensive ultrastructural account of the main aspects of the field; (2) points out gaps or controversial topics in our knowledge; and (3) outlines pertinent directions for future research. The chapters, prepared by recognized authorities in the field, present traditional information on the topic in a concise manner and, with a valuable selection of original illustrations, show what the integration of new microscopic methods can contribute to the subject in terms of new concepts. This volume will be useful to cell biologists, anatomists, embryologists, histologists, pharmacologists, pathologists, and, of course, endocrinologists. It will also be of interest to students, practitioners of medicine, and to all others dealing with clinical research and diagnosis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 10 years have elapsed since the first volume of the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) Monographs on Pathology of Laboratory Animals, Endocrine System was completed. New information of interest to pathologists has developed at a rather remarkable pace during the intervening years. Exceptional progress has been made in the routine identification of cell products in endo crine cells. A better understanding has developed of the mechanisms involved in cell metabolism, particularly involving toxins and car cinogens. Clear concepts have developed concerning the significance of some pathologic lesions in the endocrine system and their relation to human health and risk assessment. Standardized nomenclature has developed significantly during the 1O-year period since the first volume and is being utilized on an international basis. This has resulted in significant improvement in communication of pathologic data to regulatory agencies and in scientific publications worldwide. This monograph series and others sponsored by ILSI have produced a significant effect on improved communications and the international acceptance of standardized nomenclature. In this second edition, new formats have been used where more appropriate for the subjects to be covered. In many cases, the format used in the first edition still is useful. It is still necessary to recognize the morphologic features of pathologic lesions in order to identify them precisely, an essential step toward development of new insights into pathogenetic mechanisms and their use in decisions eventually applicable to public health.

Book excerpt: Biosynthesis, Modification, and Processing of Cellular and Viral Polyproteins presents the proceedings of the international conference held in Hamburg-Blankenese on May 27-31, 1980. The book discusses topics on polyproteins, polyfunctional proteins, precursor proteins, as well as the differences in synthesis and processing of ACTH/endorphin peptides in primary cultures of anterior and intermediate lobes of the pituitary. The text also presents evidence for a self-cleaving precursor of virus-coded protease, RNA-replicase, and VPg; and the role of Pr180gag-pol in the characterization and genetic analysis of retrovirus maturation.

Book excerpt: Cellular Basis of Chemical Messengers in the Digestive System contains the proceedings of an international symposium on the cellular basis of chemical messengers of the digestive system held in Santa Monica, California, on January 16, 17, and 18, 1980. The papers explore the entire spectrum of problems related to the cellular aspects of chemical messengers in the digestive system, with emphasis on which amines and peptides serve these functions and in which neurons and endocrine-paracrine cells each kind of chemical messenger is found. This book is comprised of 28 chapters divided into six sections and begins by considering the nature of gut peptides and their possible functions. The discussion then turns to the diffuse neuroendocrine system and the phylogeny of the gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine system. Methods such as immunocytochemistry, electron immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopy autoradiography are then described. The following chapters focus on the function and morphology of endocrine-paracrine cells; immunochemical characterization of peptides in endocrine cells and nerves; Langerhans islets as the neuro-paraneuronal control center of the exocrine pancreas; and regulation of metabolism by gastroenteropancreatic peptides. The final section presents experimental results, including in vitro studies of canine pseudo-islets and of the mechanism of gastrin release. This monograph will be of interest to physiologists and other practitioners in the field of medicine.

Book excerpt: This volume marks the end of twenty years of neurosecretion during which there were five symposia, namely Naples (1953), Lund (1957), Bristol (1961), Strasbourg (1966), and Kiel (1970). In comparison with these symposia an exceptionally large number of papers were read at this the sixth symposium, in London, and for economic reasons it has not been possible to publish all the papers in extenso. The editors have therefore been obliged to undertake the unenviable work of selection, a task made all the more difficult by the excel lence and importance of contributions of the symposium. We felt that it was of the utmost importance at this moment in the history of neurosecretion to present as complete a picture as possible of the present state of the subject in relation to the past and opportunities for the future. We have therefore given some preference to papers with a strong review element, research papers in areas of current importance and contributions which deal with recently developed techniques with promise for the future. We have more over attempted to strike some balance between the different areas of research on neurosecretion so that the volume as a whole may be of interest to the general reader, and that he will find in it a reasonably coherent pattern of thought which demonstrates neurosecretion as the final neuroendocrine pathway. We have attempted a certain degree of uniformity of spelling, symbols, etc.

Book excerpt: Advances in axon biology are so rapid that every year provides us with a wealth of new facts and observations; hence, this conference cannot reasonable be expected to answer all questions. Rather, its purpose must be to take stock of the available data, to communicate advances and new concepts, and to help us to formulate the goals and approaches for future research. To this end, ample time was allotted during the symposium for discussion, but these exchanges of thoughts cannot, unfortunately, be included in the printed text. We hope that publication of the presentations will provide a valuable source of information on the present state of knowledge on this most important borderland between neuro pathology, neurophysiology and neurochemistry. We would like to express our gratitude to all participants of the symposium for contributing their efforts and for their enthusiasm. We are also indebted to Springer Verlag and Bergmann Verlag for publication of the symposium and for their appreciation of the editorial concerns.

This book, however, does not provide a comprehensive account of all fields in neuroscience, but rather articles that highlight developments during the past years. The topics covered include chemistry and dynamics of neurotransmitter storage particles; release of central and peripheral neurotransmitters; and transmitters in the enteric nervous system. This book also discusses the properties of neuroreceptors; chemistry and connections of the cerebral cortex; and intracellular recording and ionic transmembrane currents. This text explains as well the invertebrate nervous systems; functions of the nervous system including neuro- and psychopharmacology; and the mind-body problem. This book will be of use not only to research workers interested in keeping updated with developments in different areas of the neurosciences, but also to advanced undergraduate and graduate students who are studying the nervous system.
