Book excerpt: Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on solid surfaces and in particular aromatic SAMs, attracted considerable attention in recent years due to their unique electrical properties. Low packing density and irreproducibility are common problems associated with aromatic SAMs. In this study, a wide range of modification conditions were used to achieve high coverage SAMs for two common aromatic precursors, 4-nitrothiophenol and bis(4-nitrophenyl) disulfide. Characterization of the SAMs prepared from 4-nitrothiophenol using a number of techniques including scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) demonstrated the formation of highly packed aromatic SAMs along with observation of distinct superstructures on gold that with further analysis revealed the ability of STM to image sub-molecular details of molecules. SAMs prepared from the disulfide lead to a chemically similar monolayer but revealed a much lower coverage with no superstructures. Our results show that these distinct features are most likely induced by SAM stress and the molecules which are involved in making these structures are in a frozen state allowing for the sub molecular details to be observed by STM.

Book excerpt: The STM is employed to monitor the effect of adsorption of an n-alkanethiolate monolayer, from an aqueous solution of the thiol, on the apparent topography of nanoscopic silver adsorption sites. Silver nano-disk structures were electrochemically deposited on graphite surfaces using the STM. The topography of these adsorption sites was then determined in-situ by STM imaging prior to the exposure of the nano-structure to an aqueous solution of an n- alkane thiol. The apparent thickness of the self-assembled monolayer (SAM), estimated from the difference in the nano-structure height measured before and after adsorption of the monolayer, increased linearly with the alkyl chain length for five n-alkane thiols (i.e., CnH(2n+1)SH) having even numbered chain lengths from n=10 to 18. For SAMs of tetradecane thiol, hexadecane thiol, and octadecane thiol, the average height increments equaled the expected all-trans chain length of these molecules indicating that little penetration of the STM tip into the surface of the monolayer occurs during the STM imaging experiment. Then came the realization that enzymes which are highly efficient ca talysts, work by way of prior complexation, often stereospecific, which is then followed by chemical reaction. Thus, systems that exhibit "host-guest" relationships, i.e., that show complexing are being looked at an ever in creasing frequency. The cyclodextrins are the first and probably the most important example of compounds that exhibits complex formation. This is a book about the cyclodextrins. There are of course other compounds that exhibit "host-guest" relationships and thus bind other organic molecules, but so far they have not achieved the importance of the cyclodextrins. By their name it is obvious that cyclodextrins are cyclic compounds. The complexes that they form are therefore cyclic inclusion complexes. Because the complexes are cyclic in nature, complexation can be very strong, as op posed to 1t-complex, electrostatic, or apolar complexes in which complex formation is two-dimensional rather than three-dimensional. Cyclodextrins turn out to be excellent models of enzymes. This is proba bly not fortuitous because they were first sought since it was discovered that the principal binding in the enzyme chymotrypsin was a cyclic inclusion complex. Cyclodextrins can do more than form cyclic inclusion complexes, they can catalyze as well. But catalysis always occurs after complex formation.
