They do so interweaving various paths, and various structures, in order to arrive at different destination points. Which temporalities, one may wonder. On the boundary between cinema and contemporary art, where boundaries actually no longer exist, the idea of temporality is affected by paths opened up in historical moments which are actually so recent as to be simply in front of our eyes. Video, for example, derived from television, has since been “overtaken” by the digital evolution, yet does not relinquish its domestic function: it re-creates itself in new forms. The same also applies to cinema. Art is certainly not limited to this, but, since it is determined by its technical form, in this it continually finds essence and continuity: thus a temporality emerges which is determined by technology and by technological change. Just as with the temporality determined by the spectator’s viewing experience, it reveals itself as being, in part, the personal essence of the subject. Therefore they are extended temporalities, since they are determined by the unique and unrepeatable combination of the length as predicted by the creator of the work, and the unpredictable time management of the observer of the work, sometimes bored, thoughtful, concentrated, patient... An extendable temporality.

He devoted his entire life to a thorough-going study of language, its structure and its use, summed up in masterly fashion in his book Language (1933). After his premature death at the age of 62, his work was at first acclaimed as an exemplary application of the scientific method to linguistics, but then fell into unjustified neglect. Now that the centenary of his birth has passed, the time has come for the story of Bloomfield's life and work to be recounted in a biography. Accordingly, basing his discussion on all available materials (including some information not accessible until recently), Professor Hall has presented Bloomfield's life history in its intellectual and cultural setting. This book is not only a biography, but also a personal memoir, in which Hall draws on his contacts with Bloomfield, who was his teacher at Chicago and a senior colleague at Yale. During this time children enjoy much autonomy and independence. Attempts of parental education are confined to a minimum. However, parents use subtle means to raise their children. Educational ideologies are manifest in narratives and in speeches addressed to children. They provide guidelines for their integration into the Trobrianders’ “balanced society” which is characterized by cooperation and competition. It does not allow individual accumulation of wealth – surplus property gained has to be redistributed – but it values the fame acquired by individuals in competitive rituals. Fame is not regarded as threatening the balance of their society.
