Book excerpt: In order to test for factors predicting AIDS-preventive safe sexual behavior, a battery comprising a demographic questionnaire, an AIDS Self-Efficacy questionnaire, a Sexual Behavior Index, and an AIDS Awareness Survey were administered to 118 undergraduate students (ages 19-28, 93% African American) at a predominantly African American state-supported university in the southeastern US. Possible predictors tested were gender, self-efficacy, perceived self-efficacy while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, knowledge about HIV/AIDS, and source of knowledge about HIV/AIDS. Under multiple linear regression, there were statistically significant correlations between each of these predictor variables and safe sexual behavior. Under a full model regression, self-efficacy was the only significant factor to predict safe sex practices. The study supported the effectiveness of the university's system of programs to provide HIV information to students. Implications for nursing are discussed.

Book excerpt: The quantitative findings indicated high levels of HIV/AIDS knowledge, self-concept and self-efficacy. Risky sexual behaviour was measured in terms of condom use and the number of sexual partners in the 12 months prior to the study with males reporting significantly more risky sexual behaviour. More males (70% vs. 43 % females) reported no condom use when engaging in sex. More males (62 % vs. 28 % females) reported having had two or more sexual partners in the 12 months prior to the study. Results also suggested that an increase in knowledge of HIV/AIDS would predict an increase in the use of condoms particularly for males. Lower self-efficacy seemed to predict an increase in the number of sexual partners for males. The focus group discussions highlighted students' views of HIV/AIDS knowledge in relation to their sexual practices, attitudes and sexual decision-making. Influences such as personal factors (self-concept and self-efficacy), social factors (e.g. peer influences, gender, and status) and environmental factors (e.g. media) were investigated. Participants also commented on the effectiveness of HIV/AIDS campaigns and the adequacy in provision of health services at college and community level. From the findings, guidelines were developed which may be used to reflect on current intervention programmes and may be considered when developing future interventions programmes, policies, or campaigns in promoting safer sexual practices amongst youth as a means of addressing the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Book excerpt: Knowledge about transmission of HIV and AIDS, the attitude towards the people living with AIDS has a critical impact on prevention of the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. Knowledge on modes of transmission, prevention alongside was assessed amongst the UEAB students in Nandi County. School based cross-sectional survey of 180 students selected through probability sampling (94 males and 86 females). A pretested questionnaire was administered to assess knowledge and attitude of the students on HIV/AIDS. Knowledge and attitude scores were generated from the students' responses and multi variable linear regression was used to study the association of these scores with select predictor variables (notably age, year of study and school of study). Most students in the sample knew about their HIV status. A good proportion (85%) knew that AIDS is not curable. This study identified substantial lacunae in the knowledge of and attitude towards AIDS. HIV and AIDS education should be strengthened among the general population, especially among youths.

Book excerpt: The aim of this research is to assess the level of knowledge on HIV/AIDS and its risk factors, attitude towards HIV/AIDS and AIDS patients and its transmission and to identify high risk behaviors associated with HIV/AIDS among university students in Xinjiang. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among students enrolled Xingjiang University and Xinjiang Medical University. Data was collected using self-administered standardized questionnaire on KAP re HIV/AIDS among 400 students. Mean knowledge scores is significantly different by ethnicity, sex, subject major, and year of study in university. Only 33.3% of the respondents had positive attitude towards HIV/AIDS patient. With regards high risk behavior associated with HIV transmission, 15.8% had at least 1 risk behavior related to unprotected sexual exposure Conclusion: HIV/AIDS health education efforts should be intensified in non-medical universities, among female, first year and Uyghur and other minorities' students. About two-thirds of the students had negative attitude towards HIV/AIDS and HIV/AIDS patients. Around 15% of these students reported having at least 1 high risk behavior related to unprotected sex

Book excerpt: Introductions: HIV infection is occurring more rapidly among men who have sex with men (MSM) than among other risk groups. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence and factors associated with HIV, syphilis, urethral gonorrhea and chlamydia infection, and anal sexual positions among MSM in southern Vietnam. Methods: A total of 2768 MSM participated in several surveys implemented in eight southern provinces of Vietnam. Information on socio demographic factors, sexual behavior risks, and treatment seeking behaviors were obtained via face-to-face interviews. Blood and urine samples were collected for HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia testing. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine factors associated with HIV, syphilis, urethral gonorrhea and chlamydia. Multivariate multinomial logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the correlates of anal sexual positions. Results: The prevalences (and 95%CI) of HIV, syphilis, urethral gonorrhea and chlamydia amongst MSM were 2.6% (2.0%-3.2%), 1.6% (1.1%-2.1%), 2.4% (1.7%-3.0%) and 4.3% (3.4%-5.1%), respectively. The prevalences of being exclusively insertive (EI), versatile and exclusively receptive (ER) among MSM were 25.6%, 64.5% and 9.9%, respectively. Demographic factors (age, marital status, whom currently living with, being religious, income, occupation), sexual risk behaviors (having ever had sex with a foreigner, condom use, anal sexual positions), alcohol use, recreational drug use, self assessment of HIV risk and syphilis seropositive were associated with HIV infection. Several factors were found to be associated with syphilis infection (occupation, HIV knowledge, multiple anal sex partners, condom use and HIV positive), urethral gonorrhea (religion, living with friends/male partners, engaging in sex with foreigners, middle/high income, ever acquired an STI and having urethral chlamydia), and chlamydia infection (age, occupation, exclusively receptive, drinking before anal sex, interaction between condom use and income and having urethral gonorrhea). Correlates of anal sexual positions included sociodemographic factors, sexual risk behaviors, recreational drug use, previous HIV testing, HIV and STI knowledge, STI related symptoms and receiving free or discounted-price condoms. Conclusions: HIV/STI and related risk behaviors are important public health issues among MSM in Southern Vietnam. On the basis of the study results, we make specific policy and intervention recommendations.
